Nice work. These people are confused because, you didn't explain heal stand properly.. You did explain how you figured the length of the ridge. I m no being critical, nice work . We also need to learn how to layout the hip and valley rafters with layout drop marks . This is what we did back in the day . There is no time to guess when we cut an stack a roof on the ground.

Tim West Thanks for the input. Our carpentry program is designed to give the students good basic skills. More time in class is spent on Heal stand ( I’ve always used Height Above plate) so our students get more than you see in our videos. These videos were never intended to be public, we just use KZbin as the vehicle to get or demos to students easily.

Watched your U3 series... very nicely done. Of all the videos I've found so far, only Larry Haun's and yours have been truly instructional. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the compliment. I had the chance to meet and talk with Larry at one of his book signings (a must read for any carpenter) about a year before he passed. He was a "hero" to me and I've used many of his tried and true methods in our program.

Just found out that all the rafters on my house were cut short by about two inches. They put in a splice every other rafter about thirteen inches long and at the back of the splice they used just one nail. In some places they put a nail on each side of the splice at the back. Is this structurally sound? They are cut short on the facia end.

how do you find the height above plate?
@glenmartin6296 жыл бұрын
Height above plate is predetermined by your common rafters. Once you determine the seat cut on the common, measure the height from the top edge of the bird's mouth to the top of the rafter along the plumb line of the heel cut. At a minimum the height above plate needs to be 2/3rd of the total length of the heel cut (plumb) in most cases. If you matching an existing roof, find the best way to accurately measure the HAP and use that for your hips and jacks . does this answer you question enough for you? thanks for watching our videos.

Make it easy on yourself . Go with whole numbers.2 3 4 inches what ever. It's easier to add those numbers when figuring the length of your post ..
