It is exactly a century since the British and some leading Arabs began a negotiation on the establishment of an Arab state to be formed on the ruins of the Ottoman Empire. Similar negotiations between the British and the French eventually led to the formation of significant parts of the Arab state system as it came into place in the aftermath of the First World War. These new states were invariably artificial creations that showed little concern for the sectarian composition of these countries.
Plagued by instability and revolution during the twentieth century, some of these states are now on the verge of disintegration. The lecture will discuss the inner workings of these states, the reasons for their downfall and the role of the Islamic State (or ISIS) in the reshaping of the map of the Middle East.
Prof. Asher Susser is the Andrea and David Stein Professor of Modern Israel Studies at the University of Arizona

I am really impressed by the in-depth look given into the changing mindset in the middle east. Drawing parallels between the six day war and the decline of Arab nationalism/rise of Islamism is really interesting. Looking forward to seeing more presentations by Prof. Susser!

I do like Asher Susser's analysis. His analysis of the break down of the two state solution (elsewhere) is excellent . A very knowledgeable bloke. Thanks for posting this.

Pardon this observation. The audio and video standards can be greatly improved. The KZbin audience need to be considered more effectively.

I like your lectures but i do have some notes and more explanation about how the reality really is ! You can't take the (mentality of both sunni and shiat population) out of tge picture The sunni is always close to the regime and support the regime by fully submission while the shiat can't do that so thats why shiat is more likely to revolt than sunni is! and i guess Iran to keep controll on shiat they need to make their people think that they are still in their revolutionary state and same with iraq thats why iraq never been stable. Also about sunni because they were through the history are in power they can't accept to be minority they always wanna be in power and feel threatened once the lose it so radicals head to more violence.

mariam mosab Egyptians are Egyptians, not Arabs. Before the conquest of Islam, they were called Copts (which is just Greek for Egyptian). Sure they've been Arabized, but they still remain genetically distinct from Arabs.

mariam mosab I understand that you think you know what you're talking about, but you're wrong. I am talking about specific people who, from a genetic standpoint, fall into ethnic categories. The overwhelming majority of the people living in what was called Al-Andalus at the time were ethnically Spanish, not Arabs. In fact, most of the ruling Muslims in the region weren't even Arabs at all. They were Berbers (A North African ethnic group). They were always a minority population ruling over the conquered Spaniards, but that does not mean Spanish people were Arab at some point. That doesn't even make sense. The same was true is Egypt. Less than 10% of the Egyptian population can trace their paternal linage to the Arabian peninsula. They are ethnically Egyptians.

+Alique Williams if you're native language is Arabic and you identify with Arabic culture, then you're an Arab. The Arabs do not define themselves by genetic markers. Go ask Egyptians if they consider themselves Arabs 9r not.
