That’s overly simplified. Putin won’t last a month if Russia withdraws from Ukraine. The people who keep him in power will take him out of power for being weak. If Russia withdraws from Ukraine, Ukraine will join NATO in days, not months. Putin knows this. Putin has to prolong the conflict to prevent it. His “strong man challenging NATO” image will be gone if Ukraine joins NATO. Putin will go out a window if just Ukraine beats his army too. That’s why he is trying so hard to provoke NATO. Macron gave him the chance to justify attacking a NATO country and Putin didn’t bite. If the “cowardly” French and “weak” Ukrainians beat Russia’s army, Putin goes out a window. Macron should deploy the Foreign Legion to combat, just because he can. China wants Outer Manchuria back. Putin can’t trust Xi not to take it if Putin loses to Ukraine or draws NATO into a fight. There are 20 million Chinese in Manchuria and 1 million Russians in Outer Manchuria. Putin loses his Pacific fleet if he loses Vladivostok to the Chinese. That escorts him to that window again. Russia loses their oil monopoly if Ukraine takes back the Donbas. The oil fields in the Azov are rich enough to threaten Russia’s oil industry and the profits they used to make in the EU. Russia could withdraw, but they can’t at this point. They also can’t stay in Ukraine. They have a choice of how bad they want to lose. There isn’t a Russian “win” in the cards. It’s like a bear caught in a trap. It’s dead if it stays in the trap and it’s dead if it breaks free of the trap. Putin probably knows this too.
