Nice video! 3:05 Strange shape of cutting tool. Wonder why it has a right-angle bend in it like that? Oh, I guess it's so that it can clear the flange when used to cut the flat of the wheel at 4:30 . It makes a nice mirror finish. Is it regular high-speed steel or carbide?

it is a HSS tool, pretty old as shape, but it is recommended by catalogs

As a machinist, I'm surprised that no coolant or water soluble fluid is used, especially after looking at the size of those chips coming off..

The inserts used here for tyre turning made of Tungsten Carbide & therefore no coolant is used.

@@shyamalendudas3280 I use tungsten carbide as well and need coolant. But then again, our wotk piece is much smaller and the cutting speeds are far greater. I am able to peel off chunks using ceramic with really good results without coolant.

several times, the wheels have some standard dimensions, they can be reshaped to the smallest, but also, they can be removed if some deep cracks or large flattening areas appear.

Usually locomotive sets have cut lines around the outer edge of the rim that shows what you can potentially cut down to. Also there are certain measurements you go by atleast here in the US following AAR standards.

Why are machine tools painted that strange medium green? I'm a mechanical engineer and I have yet to get an answer other than it's a tradition. Most people have never questioned the paint color because its just what color they are.

in our faculty we have some lathes painted in grey, a light grey, also, we have a milling machine (soviet era made), painted in ... red, of course :)

Se me afiguro que utilizaba un Aditamento copiador de maquinado, algo así como el aditamento copiador de conos o conizador, me di cuenta que utilizaba un inserto redondo y sin líquido refrigerante, creo que aunque se maquine en seco el secreto es sacar viruta fría, aunque a baja velocidad pero viruta fría, lo que también hay que destacar es la máquina que está muy robusta y no vibra, de otra manera no se logra ese maquinado y se desafila o se rompe el buril de

Not always done. I understand that in the old days at Queensland rail, worn wheels were turned to a standard undersize and then had cast steel tyres put on with a shrink fit before turning the final profile.

As I recall a “witness groove” was mandatory here in the States to prove as little metal was removed as possible. Particularly for 2 wear and multi wear wheels.

@@bruceroth3477 Ah, OK, different practices, but wouldn't both wheels on an axle have to be turned to the same diameter, so one would have a witness mark and the other would have been turned to match ?

Yes, both wheels are turned at the same time. There is, or was a profile gauge to insure that the cross section is maintained on the lathe. Now I'm sure that they use CNC tooling to get better results. The witness groove is at the base of the flange/tread on at least one wheel.

Not while the lathe is operating, but afterward when you shift the axles around. But the safety boots and the hard hats should be implemented in the work area.

Norman - no, you won't "remember" - it will be your beloved family remembering you... : ) And as Fred Dibnah once observed, "if the whole thing comes onto your head, this tin hat would do you no good at all". Seriously, though - such are/ were "working habits around this part of Europe, where everything was "in shortage" under Communism. Coolant will cost more than bit itself. Also a bit that big running this slow won't overheat much as it can dissipate heat better

The lathe is not soviet, not from USSR, it was made in Poland in 1978 and it is still in use in Romania, 2020, with great NC improvements.
