As a former driver for both, I prefer Lyft. When I signed up for Uber it was like "fill out this quick form and watch this video and you are ready" and I could've started driving an hour after signing up. with Lyft it was "we are going to do a full background check which takes a few days. You need to take your car to a mechanic and have them fill out this inspection form and then we will schedule you to meet with a driver who will verify your car and info and take a ride with you and you will be ready to begin." I feel safer knowing Lyft makes them jump through these hoops

Thank you for commenting this. I live in the city and never know which one seems safer but I have just been using Uber recently. There has been SO many times I have super crazy drivers. They’ll get road rage, drive in emergency lane, run red lights, and then also things like not turning on A/c in 100 degree weather or just having super dirty cars. I’m gonna start using Lyft and see if I have better luck because I get anxiety every time before I go on a ride now it’s gotten so bad.

Uber and I think Lyft also tell customers and drivers that 18 is the minimum age to ride. Customers will shove their kids on drivers in a heartbeat and I got into an argument with some teens when I told them I wouldn't take them and showed them the Uber policy. "But the other drivers...." Blah, blah, blah. "They're more willing to be sleazy and get in trouble than I am." Ride was cancelled. Surely they asked for another ride and someone else picked them up.

@@gregorioj.salazarbibriesca7157 I looked up average driving speeds in US cities. It varies a lot so I used 30 mph. At that speed you'll drive 1200 miles a week. I assumed $2 per gallon and 25 mpg to get a cost of about $5000 per year. That means you make $13,000 a year. An income tax calculator said taxes is ~$1000 so you take home $12,000 each year, or $24,000 every 2 years. I expect a driver to need a new car every 125,000 to 187000 miles or 2-3 years. @@nothayley Uber is by far the most commonly used app and drivers take more Uber rides than Lyft rides because Uber is far more consistent than Lyft. Lyft tends to be a longer wait between ride requests and has more requests that are farther away. The reason people think that most drivers drive for both is because you are seeing stickers for both on many cars. I know they were interested in the starting bonus for Lyft but ultimately they end up doing Uber more often for the consistency. This may not be the case in all markets but I believe I can say that most of the major Markets have many more Uber requests than Lyft.

If Lyft and Uber aren't profitable, they need to find some expenses to cut. The problem is, there aren't a lot of expenses _to_ cut. The drivers aren't paid that much and there's not much overhead, and that basically just leaves marketing and other expenses that are critical to the head-butting competition between the companies. They're in a situation of MAD (Marketing-Accelerated Destruction), where the only solution requires them to cooperate in a way that countries can but companies don't seem to.

KZbin just recently reached the break even point. But they are THE place to upload and view videos while providing revenue to creators. Then you drove in the wrong areas. You've also drove at the wrong time. Never drive Uber or Lyft on a Tuesday and you should probably avoid Wednesday as well. Even when I was in San Francisco I wasn't actually getting any passengers when I was Uber driving on a Tuesday. I am not kidding. Get a regular day job during the week and stick to Uber and Lyft driving or doordash or GrubHub or whatever on the weekend. Trust me. Since unfortunately being fired from Graton Casino for an incredibly stupid reason, I have found that if I keep working Lyft and doordash on the weekend that I can make a huge amount of money in just three days. Well I see a merger but not in the way your thinking. I could see Amazon buying uber due to three reasons. Fist not in ride sharing but in fright and technology they are a competitor in Amazons space. Second Amazon has a history of flooding a market at low cost at a loss supported by its other holdings that are profitable. Lastly they have the experience to consolidate costs to shrink the losses imagine if you had an uber using Amazon customer service and you stepped into the space with the infrastructure and branding already there and just had to trim the fat.

That's a myth that has greatly helped Lyft. I drove for both and preferred Lyft, for 2 1/2 years, but not because of the company's actions. Neither really treats their drivers like anything. They definitely don't listen to their drivers. I had numerous ideas to fix issues, they didn't care about the issues or solutions. I drove in S.F. mostly. Their employees viewed us as strangers. Not welcome in their main office. Not welcome at their parties. No path for drivers to become employees.

u do know most drivers are working for both companies right?
@KingdaToro
@KingdaToro 5 жыл бұрын
They don't. That's a common misconception. Lyft requires newer cars and requires drivers to maintain higher ratings. Lyft constantly nags drivers about their ratings and the driver app shames them for declining trips. Lyft's app requires more interaction, you have to press to confirm you've arrived while Uber does that automatically. Lyft adds additional trips automatically while you're on trip, while Uber will give you a ping that you can accept or decline as normal. Lyft doesn't do long pickup fees, so you're never paid for the time and distance it takes to get to a passenger. Uber pays you the full rate if it takes at least 11 minutes to get there. If you get into an accident during a trip or on the way to a pickup, you pay a $2500 deductible on Lyft's insurance versus $1000 on Uber's. Uber's app offers lots more cancellation reasons in the app, such as no car seat or unaccompanied minors, while with Lyft you can only choose "Other reason" then contact them to tell them why. Lyft actively works to block apps like Mystro that automate running Uber and Lyft at the same time, while Uber doesn't care about them. Really the only things Lyft does better are that it shows you the passenger's picture and almost always shows you their live location. Uber doesn't do passenger pictures, and only shows live location if the passenger enabled it in their app.

Nobody Knows Well, there’s actually quite a few different ways they could cut down on expenses in that score. They could theoretically reach lease agreements with manufacturers to rent out a fleet of self driving cars. Or, conversely, they could entice driverless car owners to rent out their own vehicles to Uber for a set fee while they’re not in use. Honestly, I’m sure quite a few people would like their car to autonomously generate a few bucks while they aren’t using it. Of course, there’s lots wrong with these ideas and there might be better ones, but it’s just two different ways Uber could capitalize on this tech.

It really depends. Uber has experience in multiple battles across the globe. It usually ends with M&A of some sort, because there's really no room for 2 giants in the market with this kind of business model. They are basically burning cash to maintain their market share - whichever side that can't take the heat will be out of the market very soon. Uber themselves took a few hits in Asian markets by exiting the market by "selling their company's asset and drivers to their competitor and taking a share in their competitor's company. And then the company that survived will slowly, but surely, scale back on their promotions.

Uber is like the downtown area of a city that has seen some things, while Lyft is the revitalized part of the city that now has a dog park. However, they're both in the same city which is always in debt. There's an analogy for you

In my experience, Uber is the drivers that just causally picked them out of name recognition, and Lyft is the more serious, dedicated ones. The signup standards at the top of the comments reflect that as well. Once had an Uber driver text while driving and then not understand what I was upset about. Lyft is usually worth the extra wait time.

Below minimum wage... Far below minimum wage. For every retired grandparent who loves to give a few Uber/Lyft rides to have something to do, there's countless poor people destroying their vehicle for pennies. Gas and oil changes are the least of a driver's worries. It's the everything else. The constant replacement of brakes and tires, constant suspension damage, and the miles, Miles, MILES! Easily, a car can go from "lightly used" to a flat out beater with 150,000 miles in 2 years. Also, the "other" repairs, the washes, details, deep vomit cleanings, the money lost from not being able to drive when said car is broken or smells like vomit waiting for a detail appointment. Obviously no paid time off, no sick pay, NO HEALTH INSURANCE, and outrageous insurance rates with brutal deductibles. All this and the drivers fear having a customer in a bad mood complaining/reporting, customers that scam the companies and drivers for free rides. It's a living hell for most drivers and they have to sa ay everything is great since they don't know that ratings dont really matter any more.

Well, they're technically both tried and true industries, right? (Cabs and retail). I can see why investors could be interested and apprehensive at the same time. It's only a matter of time before Amazon decides to start jacking up prices. Even then, it will likely take a long time before any competitor gets a foothold on the market. My guess is ride sharing is here to stay.

Except Amazon is/has been building an extremely strong moat around their businesses. If Amazon cut back on some of their investments and increased their fees a bit they could easily 3x their profits. And Amazon (most likely) wouldn’t have to be afraid of losing market share. The same can’t be said about Uber and Lyft. There isn’t much keeping a company like Waymo from competing with Uber and Lyft once self-driving cars become the norm. Especially not if margins are high. The Amazon model really only works for businesses with huge network effects and/or economies of scale.

I think the problem is that we're in a gig bubble. For any outsiders, the "Gig economy" is the name used by economists to describe the glut of streaming and sharing services that exist. Every company is coming out with one and they're all mutually exclusive and according to speculators on Wall Street, they're all billion-dollar ideas. I fear that at some point in the near future, it will burst. Maybe some of the big names survive, maybe we see some mergers (Netflix-Hulu anybody?) but at some point I feel it has to contract.

From what I've heard, drivers are hesitant to drive something other than their "personal" car for Uber. That needs to change so that people with disabilities can have some semblance of independence that they deserve.

I'm entitled to anything an abled bodied person under the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990. Under the Act, I, as well as those who have physical disabilities, and use a wheelchair as I do are, yes, entitled to the same freedoms anyone gets anyway, free from discrimination. Some people who use a wheelchairs to get around cannot easily transfer to a regular car. So, they cannot take a taxi. So they would require public, or private transportation that is equipped to suit their needs to get to where they need to, or wish to go. If you are referring to public para-transport options, like an municipal Open Door bus service, they can be somewhat unreliable. Unless there is oversight to ensure timely pick ups of clients.

I currently drive for Uber, and have driven for Lyft before. One of the main reasons I switched is mostly out of personal preference. Lyft markets itself to drivers almost like you are joining a family-like select circle of valued drivers. When my car broke down in a bad neighborhood, I called for my own tow truck, but I called my "Lyft family" to have ask someone to come out to watch my car while I go use the bathroom (after waiting 3 hours), and all Lyft would do is read off the terms and conditions in a lawyer-esque manner, specifically how they are not responsible for anything that happens to me or my vehicle. So much for "family". At least Uber is honest, and makes you understand that you are simply just a driver, which has a certain value, but also is just as expendable as someone else is more than willing to take your place. It's true for both of them, but at least Uber essentially keeps it professional without the sugar coating.

I have experienced those incentive discounts they give restaurants as a driver. In order to make that work, they make huge cuts to what the driver makes, while they themselves walk away making the same amount from the Uber Eats pick-up/delivery. Of course, as a driver, you have absolutely no control over it. At the beginning of the Covid-19 lock-down, I was making a flat $4.00 typically per delivery. Yes, $4.00!!!! I was lucky that I was in a city where tippers were/are generous. Uber has since dropped the promotions to draw people in (mine was an emerging market for them), and accordingly the amount I get from it has increased, but I still make close to half from the generosity of tippers. The bottom line is that you cannot make a good living from it without tips. Uber pays peanuts and depends on tippers to make up the rest. Not every city has generous tippers like I experience where I live now. I used to drive (passengers) in Atlanta. Atlanta is a horribly low-tipping market. I believe that had I tried to make as much from Uber Eats there, I would have had to work 7 days a week as opposed to the three days a week I work here.

👏🏼Yuupp, and they have a better company name in general too. Like WTHeck is an Uber? Back in the day, the common man would say : Hey, do you need a lift, or hey, lemme give you a lift, hop in. So that in it of itself makes more sense to me. It just sounds natural.

When I retired in 2012, I needed to cut expenses. Crunched the numbers and my 20 yr old, paid for, 50 mpg Geo was costing me $1500 a yr, not counting repairs. I now get around by walking, bus, and Lyft. The drivers are friendly, they help me with my groceries, and I’ve never had to wait more than eight minutes for a ride.

Isn't it odd they have a lot of expenses when they manufacture nothing, really? Just merge like Sirius and XM Radio.

Yes that is how service industries work...also radio is not a service industry...and has nothing in common with uber or lyft

Does the driver or Uber and Lyft pay for the gasoline? That would be one major expense that cuts into the sales.

Wait... Are you saying that anything that isn't manufacturing should have no expenses? Either you are a child, or you are stuck in an outdated industrial era mindset.
