A video recording that is a little more difficult to record than I am used to

@BecomingCritter on twitter challenged me to record a difficult video!
/ 1381358330858311684
For my challenge I filmed an entire video in one take, no edits, no do-overs--just me and a camera.
I fumbled the end a bit but the result is nowhere near as bad as I had imagined :)

I watched to the very end because something was keeping me captivated. It's your courage to face the fear and the way you chose to do it. Kudos to you!

SO GOOD. I found this really really engaging, for what it's worth. Your personality really comes through (that's a good thing)

I didn't hear one ah or um. You simply paused. That's what I want to do. Thanks for the video.

In the right mindset, I pause. But most of the time I use um and ahh a lot!

Nice, James! I've been experimenting with doing one-take videos recently. A part of what inspired me was your video on the speaking course you recently took! We've all been told about the short attention span of potential viewers, but I believe that by being completely authentic and genuine, you have an even better chance at attracting the audience that is there for you, your personality, and your message. Of course, production quality and structuring your videos in a way that captures attention is still important and shouldn't be ignored, but I think there's something to be said for just having a person be real and talk to a camera. In fact, a long time ago, that was exactly what KZbin was about and what people came to see-people being genuinely themselves in front of a camera for others to see and connect with.

Well said Mark! I notice I'm often much more "invested" in a creator if I come across a video of them just being real--Danny Gervitz comes to mind.

@@JamesStuber Danny is great. And Ali is great too- even though he does more editing, his style is still very authentic and natural.

I find it reality-bending that you've beat yourself up over an entire lifetime about pausing in your speech I'm the opposite I get overly excited to chat with people. My memories of middle school are a blur of getting most people around me to eventually say "shut up" at least once. To this day, I still wish I didn't have so much to express that I could shut up, slow down, & put more pauses into my sentences. What's weird is I'm not even the inverse of your case, I was one of the best math minds in my school district so I never had an insecurity about nor calcified the correlation between "talks too much" & "doesn't know what they're talking about". Your speech tempo sounds way closer to my theoretical ideal (must be super useful for high-stakes situations to not be too quick to reveal information). Hah even this comment ended up way longer than I intended. Thanks for sharing

The range of human experience is so crazy. Speaking quickly can be powerful as well. Lean into it and you'll find your "theoretical ideal" looks nothing like my speech tempo

Man, you should do a few of these per week! I know the Algo doesn't favor it, but who cares. These types of videos are more real. And there's a beauty to natural human speech, a beauty we're forgetting about the more we're encouraged to make hyperactive content simply to keep people interested. In real life, I've always disliked talking to people who speak as if they're jumpcutting every pause, every moment of silence between words and phrases. It's exhausting. Slow down! You don't look stupid if you're pausing to think, because at least you're thinking. Anyways, great stuff here James, keep it up :)

Thanks Paul. This one gets fewer views but waaaay better feedback. If I play the long game that's what I'm aiming for anyways
