Uberti 1862 Pocket Navy .36 - Review & First Impressions

The 1862 Pocket Navy is a very nice compact version of the 1851 Navy, both in .36 caliber. Range video coming in the upcoming months!

About a year too late to this party but I have a Pocket Navy so this caught my attention. Absolutely fantastic pistol except for one annoying problem, as it comes from the box it cap jams every other shot!!!! I tried all the suggested tricks, polishing the hammer face, stronger hammer spring, etc but none of these had much effect on the problem. I had just about given up until I replaced the factory nipples and BINGO the problem was solved!! The cap jams simply stopped and the pistol became the shooter it should have been from the factory. I used the "Slix-Shot" nipples but it's my understanding now that the "Treso" nipples work just as well. As an added note Bass-Pro Shops has Remington no. 10 caps (as of 6/22/24) both online and in the stores, $12.96 per hundred but at least they have them in stock and no limits.

Great minds think alike! I just received a colt pocket navel from Simpsons! Can’t wait to launch lead down range with it. I have the ‘62 police also with a 6 1/2” bbl. The pocket navy I have was built by Uberti for German company Hege Jadg. Really nice build quality on te one I have. Glad you fared ok through the ravages of Ian!

Looking forward to it. When colt made the 1860 it was just a 51 navy with a rebated cylinder and there new barrel design. They saw ot worked so well they did it to a 49 pocket model making the 62 pocket navy and the pocket police.

Sorry to hear that, people I know down in the port Charlotte/Northport area and they have been dealing with a lot with the aftermath of the storm hitting with so much force in that area; continued power outtages, building/property damage, even roads getting destroyed, like you mentioned.

With my 1862 police pocket I found the 380 ball got better accuracy with 15gr of fffg powder. It was throwing shots all over with the 375 ball. I put slixshot nipples on it and I have had two cap jams out of about 50 rounds fired.

I will see how mine fares, like you say .380 may be best. Slixs are awesome, I may upgrade depending on how the cap post works out.

I have the Uberti 1862 pocket police, I was getting cap jams like crazy, I swapped out to the Slixshot nipples only to discover I was getting failure to detonate, I removed them and measured with my calipers from the base of the threads to the top of the nipples in comparison to the factory nipples and found out why, the Slixshot nipples were .020 thousandths of an inch shorter so the hammer wasn’t able to strike the caps enough to set the rounds off, I’ve since added an extra hammer spring to help prevent the cap blow back that caused the original cap jam issue, I will test it out the next time I take it to the range and see how it performs with the original nipples

I put the original nipples back on it, I don’t think it was cap sucking I think it was a weak hammer spring allowing the back pressure of detonation to push the hammer back and the spent caps back down into the action, as soon as I get a chance to get back to the range I will test it again, it’s been my problematic cap and ball revolver but I’m determined to overcome its drawbacks and make it reliable (if it’s possible)

@@blackpowdershooter44 neither did I. I tried trigger guard and blackstrap as a set. The colt will work in the 62 frame. On the colt the hole for the uberti align. The screw heads on the colt are to big to tighten down. Reason I checked was my colt frame needs repair at the ring area where the cylinder and frame meet And I wanted to shoot .31. I also have 2 DGW 62 navy’s ( uberti is police) Euroarms or?? Do not match hole and barrel does not go on So for you guys out there my 1849 (1863) barrel and cylinder work on a uberti 62 police frame

Pocket police has a rounded/streamlined barrel whereas the pocket navy has the 1851 Navy style look; octagon barrel

Once you get to the range, I'd like to hear your opinion on which of the .36 calibers (1851, 1862, NMA) that you find to be the best. IMO, I feel the '51 Navy's are oversized for the caliber, same probably for the NMA, but I like NMA's more, but the 62's are just the proper size for a .36, even tho they hold less powder than the larger guns do.

I was in the US Coast Guard at the time {working at Air Station Miami at Opa Locka Airport}, so I stayed. Opa Locka was initially the largest operating Airport in the area, so relief supplies were being flown in there. FWIW: We were living in NORTHERN Dade County when Andrew hit SOUTHERN Dade County. We had been living in southern Dade, but moved to north Dade in early April of '92 because the COMMUTE back and forth to Opa Locka Airport after 4 years was taking a toll on my psyche...😊 The apartment complex we had been living in was HEAVILY DAMAGED, although it was eventually repaired.
