I completely agree with you. I enjoy my AR's and AK's and am glad I have them. However, my love of Old West guns has overtaken my love for more modern tactical fare. My tactical guns are welcome tools I hope I never have to use...my cowboy guns are the ones I just love to ogle and shoot for the pure pleasure of shooting.

I was raised in the early 60's where a man owned at least two guns and that was a 12 gauge shotgun and a Winchester. I have many firearms from pistols to .50 caliber rifle but none will ever replace my passion for the Winchester except it has to be the 30-30 for me personally. Uberti does make gorgeous guns, I'm hoping to get an 1860 Army cap/ball from them soon. BTW a lever gun for defensive use can get the job done as well as any AK/AR if you're practiced with it. They are fine weapons. Great video.

One of my first cowboy rifles in the 90s was a 24 incher in 45 Colt. Nice finish, good trigger, fit and finish. Didn’t modify it with the gamer short stroke. Fast enough and original to original design. Still fun to shoot. History in your hands

Along time ago when just a lady of 12 (1962) my Grandfather gave me his 1873 Winchester 32-20, along with a single action Colt in the same cal. I still and will always own them. I do think that they retarded my interest in more modern firearms. I own a number of late 19th early 20th century fire arms and own only two auto loaders. 1911 matched up to a Marlin Camp Carbine in .45 acp. Two guns like this is still a cowboy thing.

If I get into single action shooting, that is EXACTLY the combo I want, a 73 and a SAA in 357. Technically, it's not a historical cartridge, but the rifle can shoot an older 38 colt if needed. If you put these guns in a time machine, the people of that time could have easily put them to use.

Great video and beautiful guns! I also debated which rifle to buy between the "real" Miroku Winchester and one of the Italian clones. I ultimately went with the Miroku Winchester short rifle in .357/.38. Mine also has the 20 inch barrel with beautifully figured wood and "color case hardening". I have shot it monthly at our local cowboy action matches since buying it this past spring and it is fantastic. When you were talking about safeties on the rifle, you never mentioned quarter cocking the hammer (the first click from hammer down position) which is the one actual safety this gun has. It keeps the hammer from contacting the firing pin and disables the trigger so it can't be fired even with a round chambered, then, when you're ready to fire, all you have to do is cock the hammer and you're good to go.

I don't like the fake case hardening on the Miroku, but otherwise it's superior to the Uberti.

That is definitely a beautiful rifle. I prefer the reddish tint to the wood finish on the Uberti. I'm thinking about buying the 73 with 24" barrel and ad a traditional tang sight. I'm trying to decide what caliber I'm kinda leaning towards the 44-40 being the original cartridge and I think it is much more useful than people think. Think about it the 44-40 was the standard in the 73 for almost 50 years it must have gotten the job done. Thanks 👍

I use a Henry Big Boy in .357/.38 Spl and it works just fine for competition - in fact, you can really work the lever hard and it never failed me. When loading for my stage turn, the Henry loads faster when I remove the inner tube and just drop the 10 rounds into the open end - and the guy next to me is still pushing the rounds throug his loading gate (really tough when the gun is new). Also goes well with my Henry .22LR Frontier model.

I bought one of these two months ago, mine is in .45 Colt and has a half octagonal/half round barrel, a very good looking and functioning rifle, as is the 24" version I have. I also have an original Winchester 1873 chambered in 38-20, lining the two up side by side there is nothing I can fault the Uberti on, it is, except for some modern markings, a new Winchester 1873. Well, there is one thing about Uberti's rifle, there is a lip on the magazine feed plate that catches the rim of the case, that is not present on the original Winchester and is something I would eliminate.

Beautiful rifles. I've been on the fence about buying the Uberti 1873 or the model 94 they are now making in Japan. After seeing this I will be going with the Uberti. The 94 has been modified to the point where it's a model 94 in name only compared to what the rifle it use to be.

You can find original Winchester 94s in shops for reasonable money, and that includes pre-64 models. Uberti makes very good Model 1873 rifles, I have two of them, rifle and short rifle, both in .45 Colt.

I preferred 45 colt for mine. They are beautiful for sure. But, my blackhawk in 45 colt has acquired modern hogue grips. So, I have my 1858 remington cap and ball in a cavalry holster with it for a real western feel.

Great video and yes the average bolt carrier in an AR seems to wear and fail @ 4,000 rounds so unless you have the tools to change it out and the know how you may be screwed out in the field in a dystopian wasteland scenario! - Does a modern lever action start to fail at the same 4-5 k mark idk???

I have a Uberti 1873 in 44WCF , the most beautiful lever action of all, and that includes the 1866 Yellowboy my second favorite, that I own also , that is chambered in 44-40 also and of course the 1860 Henry. The '73 is the King 👑 in my humble opinion.

I sold all my AR's and AK's even my SKS. All I own is leaver actions from 22lr to 50-110. My favorite is my 44wcf Its a 1866 short rifle it holds 13. I have killed deer with it and it has over 10k threw it with no problems yet. The problem with the 1873 and 1866 is the leaver spring and the lifter springs they are to heavy and will were the lobes of the leaver. Grind them down or replace them. guns like this you need to reload for.

Now that Winchester is making these guns again, I am torn between getting this gun, which is gorgeous and masterfully crafted (also lower in price), versus a "real" Winchester '73 made in Japan with the Winchester name and trademark on it. The Japanese are no slouches in the gun-making art. I have the Browning BL-22 lever gun that they made, which is a beauty. Let's face it, Winchesters will never be produced in New Haven, Connecticut again so it is either Italian replica or Japanese "real" Winchester (shouldn't really be in quotes.) So which one should I get? I welcome any opinions.

Thanks for the video. I've owned 100 year old 1873's and new Ubertis. The original still functioned flawlessly. No new parts. Even though the new metallurgy should be better. The old ones were well made but wouldn't ake a 37 mag chambering. I'm rambling but just take care of your tools and they will last several lifetimes.

You can easily polish your trigger and all the moving parts without sacrificing the longevity and strength of the rifle. You don't really want to remove material and if you do its with 2000 grit so it won't affect the strength if the rifle

At 14:54 I mistakingly state that the 1873 does not use an extraction claw similar to the Henry. This is simply not true. While they do incorporate different methods of cycling they both have an ejector claw which grabs the cartridge. My bad

I like my Henry Golden Boy. But, like you, I'm no fan of things that pretend to be something but aren't. The Golden Boy's receiver looks like real brass, at least at first glance. In fact, it's an alloy called Zamac-5, part zinc, part copper, part aluminum, but heavier on the zinc side. Pot metal, some have called it, though I wouldn't go that far. That said, the Golden Boy is chambered for .22; therefore it will hold up for years, if not a lifetime if maintained.

That trigger safety that requires the lever to be held snug to the stock before it will allow the trigger to be pulled is an original Winchester feature, not a modern thing.

I bought the Uberti 357 rifle today. I had a hard time deciding which caliper, decided to buy 3 guns. Uberti 357, Henry Silverboy 22 magnum, and the Marlin 1895 45-70 stainless steel (SBL). The Henry 22 magnum makes sense because most 22 lever guns use the same loading style under barrel. One thing I haven't figured out is the cleaning kit for 357 magnum rifle. There isn't an actual kit, or even an actual rod either for rifle. Also the bore snake is designed for pistol and is short. Any advice on this?

Have both .357, 44.40, fantastic fit and finish. They are very reliable but not made to shoot like an FAL or M1-A. Be reasonable with loads in your power factor- less is more because hit loads are t I tally unnecessary. Clean mine with Kroil an Ballistol. Both Rifles over 27 years old an shoot like lasers.

You are correct that the Henry Big Boy is not a reproduction of anything that existed in the 19th Century. It certainly has nothing in common with the 1860 Henry rifle, nor does the Henry Repeating Arms company for that matter. The Big Boy is sort of a modified Marlin action.

In the video that rifle looks well made and fit/finish looks good. But, I'd have to say every other Uberti I've owned or looked at was just a slight bit on the crude side. File marks, poor wood inlet...so so machine work. Wonder if in this case you jst have a good sample?

I have a Uberti 1873 and the finish and wood fitment is immaculate. The rifle chambers anything I choose to feed it with smoothly and is accurate to boot. Perhaps the examples that you have owned / handled were just bad samples?

At a gun show some years ago I was curious (while blessed to own handguns and long guns in the caliber yet they were inconsistent in their markings, ".45 Colt" and ".45 Long Colt," just like so many of the factory ammunition boxes in my inventory) and politely queried an executive of an ammunition manufacturer why their product wasn't labeled the old school and correct name, ".45 Colt." "It's the lawyers," he responded. "It sounds like an urban legend, but somewhere in the annals of anecdotes of stupid shooters and Darwin-Award winners -- in the dark regarding the very clear and basic differences between .45 ACP and .45 Colt -- and unscrupulous attorneys coming in to play the liability insurance angle and apparently a costly claim was made and paid. Don't ask me how." Hearing this first hand I thought it was interesting and incredibly sad that a century old caliber, .45 Colt, was -- in some quarters -- being supplanted by .45 Long Colt. David Drake. Interesting. You are the first I have heard of to think the Uberti is better quality then the Miroku. I have not seen them side by side. It's all a matter of personal taste. Have fun shooting it, if, that is you can find the ammo...... My Winchester is in the super popular 32-20 that zillions of people have so no ammo at any price. Just kidding. It was hard to find before all this shortage, so I guess I'll have to reload.

Didn't Winchester refuse to make a rifle in Colt 45 for a very long time? He made it in 44 40. Also, Winchester made plenty of rifles in a 38 caliber, so a 357 isn't that far off, and modern 357 rifles can shoot the older 38 rounds.

45colt is not an original cal in any Winchester rifle. 44-40 was the big pistol cal. ,Colt chambered it in their single actions, but Winchester wouldn’t chamber the 45 colt rd.

They made the 73 with a 12” inch barrel up to 37” inches. I believe the 16 and under were known as “trapper” models, could be wrong on the last part. Cheers

Nice gun. But I always kind of think “oh well” when I find out somebody’s nice lever action is in .357 magnum. I understand why cowboy action guys like it and all. Cheaper and easier to shoot and find ammo for. But it was mean’t to shoot a .44-40. Basically the power of a .44 Magnum handgun with the accuracy and ease of a rifle. At least a .45 Colt (even if it was never designed for that, it’s at least a period cartridge). Great gun and action.

Major manufacturers offered their guns in a variety of calibers. It depends on what you mean by "originally". I have a 19th century SAA in 38 caliber. There were plenty of people who carried 36 and 38 caliber guns in the frontier period.

Khắc cảnh lê I mean originally. Sure there were Colt SAA (and Navy, etc) in .38 /shortLong Colt and such in the 19th century. But there was never a .357 Magnum Colt SAA as that round was not developed until 1935.
