Thought I could get better results with the Johnston & Dow conical if I would use a faster twist barrel

Remarkable accuracy at 50 yards and thank you for sharing this experience.

Great content. (I'm just speaking for my self in my own constructive criticism about my own marksmanship) especially when pistol shooting at 50 yards, I will usually group better in the first go around string, then, I have expectations of the accuracy, (That being the downfall) I expect to shoot just as well or better than the first go around and put too much pressure on myself, trying to hard and letting that get in my head, then, one thing happens, I let the expectations build, that distracts me from sight alignment while trigger squeeze, and holding consistent ruining the next group. Trying too hard can be just as bad as getting sloppy, funny thing, ever have it happen when you don't care, the group tightens up? same thing happens with peoples pet loads in rifle, they get the same thing going on, last week it shot outstanding, this week it won't hold less than two inches. - Dave

Yes I have had that happen. Years ago I was shooting bullseye 22 league. There was a handicap match coming up and I had no pressure. In fact I figured to throw a low score that would be helpful for the upcoming handicap match. I shot my highest match of the year. I fully agree. It does however work the opposite for some folks, they perform better under pressure, but not me. Thanks for the thumbs up. 👍. O.R.

@@oldranger3044 I really like the content. I see channels of guys measuring, tweaking, spending all kinds of money on custom bullets, bullet molds, reloading equipment, and having their guns tuned and custom refitted, swearing by some super expensive hard to find powder, choreographing, records keeping.... and on and on.. then as the most serious test they shoot at 7 - 10 yards? Then they have 20 minuets of commentary about all that stuff and "What it takes". KZbin is full of them.

@@thorsaxe5881 Thanks again. I’m not through yet with the J&D conical. I wonder if it needs paper around the base that would make it more difficult to get a wobble in the axis. I know it makes a difference in cartilage guns to have the bullet not be able to cant. Hopefully I’ll find the time to tinker with it. I better, or I’ll get grumpy and my poor wife and kids shouldn’t have to put up with that. O.R.

@@oldranger3044 I know how bullets at range make a difference in the way they fly through the air. Just like .38 full wad cutters, @ 50 yards they (Idk) if tip is a good word for it, however, the holes in the target are oblong and that tells me that somethin g is happening past the 25 yard mark., Back to what you have, attaching paper around the base may provide somewhat of a tail stabilizer to keep the wobble from getting out of control resulting in better accuracy. It's worth a try.

@@thorsaxe5881 Thanks for that insight and encouragement. Most if not all 38’s or whatever have a base that rides the bore. Even those with a bevel to facilitate loading keep that bevel short. These J&D have .14” at the base that measures .429. I assume this is for the paper wrap for the powder when using the paper cartridge. Without the base riding the bore, that bullet it seems can easily tip and rotate off its axis which can’t be good for accuracy. O.R.

On e thing you may consider doing is weighing all of your bullets & balls in .5 of a grain increments, example : (80 to 8.4 grains) don't know exactly what they weigh without dragging out the digital scale and weighing one, this may reduce the flyers. I use .454's in my Walker and have never shot it @ 50 yds. yet. Thanks for getting me motivated.

I’ll keep that in mind. That J&D has a ring that is narrow and I think acts like a pivot point where the bullet can tip to the chamber side. If the rear section didn’t have the recess for the paper cartridge, maybe it would not be able to tip. That might be my next challenge, to somehow fill that. O.R.

Really impressive group at 50 yds! The faster twist really makes a difference even with the round ball, I wonder what the result would be using Swiss? Stay safe! Chris B.

I suspect better than the BlackMZ. When I look back at many targets shot with that powder (probably hundreds), I see lots of evidence of strings. Probably something to do with the way it burns. I really need to be using the "real stuff", but availability and cost sort of directed me to my catch of BlackMZ. Especially with the Walkers. What I should do next is try to find some way to better align the conicals upon seating and then go with a different powder. So much to do, and so little time. Thanks Chris. O.R.

@@oldranger3044 Does your conical have a spigot to locate in the chamber mouth like the Eras gone Dragoon bullet?
@oldranger30449 ай бұрын
@@453421abcdefg12345 the Lee doesn’t. The J&D has a recess at the base where I believe paper would wrap around. Easy loading without the paper but I’m wondering if because of the lack of paper, it can tip to the side when firing. A round ball doesn’t really care that much. But a conical??? I doubt they care much for that. They don’t however seem to be key holeing however. O.R.

@@oldranger3044 Interesting about the base maybe not seating square to the bore, it only needs the slightest angle to deflect the bullets flight, I tried hollow base bullets in my 1873 to overcome the chamber/groove problem, but they went all over the target, I think as they left the muzzle the skirt was deformed by the pressure exiting behind them, so if the flat base bullets exit at even a slight angle they will tumble or deflect, so many experiments to conduct! Stay safe! Chris B.
