I'm a trap shooter and shotshell reloader, so I always have lots and lots of Red Dot on hand.....old habits die hard!!... My fave range loads for 45LC has, for decades, been a 250 gr. SWC or a 230 gr. Hardball ahead of 6.0 gr. Of Red Dot. Doesn't take up much space in that big 45LC case, but I never had a complaint. Either load will shoot through the same hole all day at 25 yards. Burns very clean, too! Bullseye and Unique are filthy in pistol loads, in my experience. Oddly, Unique burns clean in my 20ga. Skeet loads. Go figure.

Great vid - your time and effort is much appreciated. Do you have any insight or (documented) knowledge of what the most common practice was in respect lube vs no lube (with or without wads) back in 1858? Would be interesting to know how the Outlaw Josey Wales approached his cap'n'ball pistol?
@oldranger304410 күн бұрын
@@andrewsutton7007 Thanks Andrew. Your question is a good one, and promotes quite a bit of speculation which I always enjoy. The danger of that is that folks can come up with a speculation or idea, and then for whatever reason (maybe pride) will then hang onto it like a puppy to a bone. So, I have found little information. I’m told (haven’t seen the instructions) that Colt used no wads or lube. My opinion is that wads became the norm a-lot because Elmer Keith described his loading method where he used them. Elmer was a well respected author and shooter. It can be found in his book “Sixguns”. As for lub, I don’t remember what publication I found that recommended it, probably some book on black powder loading. As for Josey, he probably didn’t use either when he practiced. When carrying, possibly something on the chambers to prevent moisture if there wasn’t a good seal between powder and ball. Revolvers probably weren’t shot and reloaded as many times in succession like today, therefore fouling buildup wasn’t an issue. I also speculate that the powder used didn’t build up fouling like modern does, therefore not affecting accuracy. I have circumstantial evidence for this but won’t go there now. I understand that paper cartridges were used for those that could afford them (probably not Wales), and probably no wads or lube. O.R.

How did you make your modified grease gun?
@oldranger304421 күн бұрын
@@duigiud Not to difficult to do. I started with the mini grease gun from harbor freight. Amazon lubrimatic 30-800 looks about the same. On the harbor freight I removed the grease from the cartridge that came with it. The empty one got inserted and lube added. I have a selection of zerk fittings and used a 45 degree 1/4-28, take apart and remove spring and ball. I found some 3/16 tube that fit over the threads so when the grease fitting goes into the gun the tube slides into the chambers. Works really good when working. A bit messy on refilling. Also sometimes airlocks. Even Elon Musk has problems with first attempts. Maybe this helps, probably could do a video if there was interest. As with most lube, viscosity is key. Too stiff won’t work. @@carlrav5660 I pretty much stopped shooting the cap and ball guns for similar reasons. Tried the Elmer Keith method and I do believe that he got good results. I didn’t. I have ideas about why it worked for him, won’t go there now. Your mixture should be fine, but it needs to be soft enough to coat the barrel. Not just be blown out as a chunk like a wax bullet. Without the lube, a person might get the first cylinder (maybe two) to be pretty decent. Normally things get a lot worse after that. If one person like yourself can improve their accuracy, makes me feel great about making the video. I should add that since I have a good supply of felt, and that it’s less messy and just as fast or faster to use wads, if I could get the accuracy and eliminate flyers by using them, I’d change my handle to W.M. (Wad Man). O.R.

@@carlrav5660 Yes, that has about the right consistency, especially in warmer weather, which the Old Ranger favors, just keep under 90. Wasn’t nearly as picky years ago. Most serious BP shooters feel keeping the fouling from building up and becoming hard is critical. Assuming that true, I don’t understand how the small amount of lube on the edge of the wad can help much. Maybe in the first inch, but after that, what purpose does the rest that’s not contacting the barrel do? Not much I’m thinking. O is still for old, you can guess the rest. O.W.

Great rifle, Barrel quality is one thing and you have to have a good quality made barrel, however, what people don't consider is the quality of their sights, if you have Hard to see sights, or sights that really don't go with that rifle, no matter how much you spent on that barrel it will never give the results that you were expecting, that's what I've experienced. peace out- Dave
@oldranger3044Ай бұрын
Thanks, and you are so right about the sights. Pictures of old timers from the South with their "turkey" guns shows how they covered their rear sights with shades. It's also about lighting. I like to see light around my sights, my eye can center, but if there is marginal light, and the sight drifts, what little brain I have can't center when part of the front sight is lost. And then there's the issue of old eyes and is a person shooting paper, or actually in the woods. Often a setup for one does not work for the other. I remember putting the rear sight further up the barrel, as I remember my Uncle was farsighted. Great comment. O.R.

Thanks, have one on cleaning the Walker cap and ball revolver, but nothing on rifles. I've tried different methods but lately I've removed the barrel. I'm not too afraid because I've built what I shoot, so I can remove the pins if I'm careful without damage to the stock. Most folks might not want to do that to their 3K+ rifle. That black residue will raise heck with the stock finish. Once the barrel is out (most of the Hawken styles it's easy) then there's less to worry about. Do a KZbin search on cleaning, probably lots out there. Thing is, you won't know if their system doesn't work until it's too late. O.R.
