Great Video and super simple to follow. Can I ask a few questions...... 1) Why do you need the UniFi Security Gateway, why not just plug the Lan from your ISP Router into the Switch? 2) I assume that the Cloud Gatway is for Internet Access, is this bit 100% necessary?
@distrodomain5 жыл бұрын
If you want to use the ISP router you can indeed just plug it into the switch and It should work, I just like to use USG Security Gateway (which is a router) instead so that I have 100% integration and control with the unifi controller
@Killer_Sharkz5 жыл бұрын
the gateway is not necessary, but you do loose some functionality that the gateway provides but nothing important.

To use the USGs firewall and port forward feature, would you have to diable the firewall on the modem the ISP gives you?
@distrodomain4 жыл бұрын
Ideally you would replace the ISP router with the USG, if you can't then yes disable the firewall on the ISP router or even better, most ISP routers have a bridge mode that will make your ISP router basically just a bridge passing through all traffic to the USG

Cool video. I need to replace the consumer junk I have at home that is 1 year past it's life cycle (and hasn't gotten a security update in ages) with this same setup. I will probably get the Gen2 Cloud Key, though, which has a battery that allows it to shut down properly, preventing DB corruption. Let us know after a few months how this setup works for you (the good and bad)!!

Can you plug in a wireless router between the firewall and switch?
@distrodomain4 жыл бұрын
You could but the firewall already works as a router, aht you could do is use your wireless router as a wireless access point by enabling bridge mode if your wireless router supports that feature, the you plug in both the firewall and the wireless router to the switch

What type of device do I need (i.e. any cheap spare router, a some kind of standalone access point, a bridge etc.) in order to achieve the following (overly explained xD): I want to set up a limited LOCAL ONLY home automation system that has a wireless network of its own - which means it's fully separated from my house's main network and its connected devices (including the one router hosting my main network) and thus it won't have access to the internet or be able to communicate with any device connected to my main network. I want my "smart home"-network to only be accessable and controlled locally by specific devices connected to and within reach of the secondary wifi-signal (that which not originates from the main router with a modem attached), so it can't possibly be controlled remotely from a smartphone over 4G or from any device elsewhere in the world! (Don't want anyone to open your door? - Lock the door. Don't want anyone to kick-in your door? - Then don't HAVE a door! ...Smart-ass 😏😉)
@distrodomain4 жыл бұрын
hahahaha very detailed commt!, you can achieve that using the same equipment and using a VLAN Isolating completely your smart home network, If you set it up correctly and if your equipment supports VLAN and VLAN tagging. cheers!

Will it work with a T-P link 24 port unmanaged switch instead of the Unifi switch?
@distrodomain5 жыл бұрын
You can plug the USG(Router) to the T-P link 24, and it will work, If you want to use the CloudKey you would need to get a PoE injector to provide power to it, or using a usb cable to provide power unless your T-P link 24, has PoE intergrated, alternatively you could install the controller software on your computer and manage it that way or have a VM and install the controller there, though keep in mind that if you want to migrate or change your controller location you would have to make a backup and the restore it.
@gpraceman5 жыл бұрын
You could use an unmanaged switch. However, having a managed switch means that you can implement VLANs to provide segregation of your devices (like separating untrusted IoT devices from the rest of your network). That switch does also provide PoE to provide power to access points, a Cloud Key, security cameras, etc. so you don't have to use PoE injectors. Though, Ubiquiti does have less expensive versions of that switch (US-8 with just one PoE port and the US-8-60W with 4 PoE ports).

what happens if you don't have a cloud key? can you still do this configuration?
@SuperWolfkin5 жыл бұрын
yeah you can install the ubiquiti software on your computer or on your phone as well. The only issue is that you'll need to use that computer or phone to make any changes. But that's not bad. You can install it on a computer and then turn it off when you're done and everything will still work fine.

@gpraceman5 жыл бұрын
A modem translates the signal from your ISP to an Ethernet signal that a router can then use. Some modems are combo units, also doing routing, switching and WiFi. It is better to have separate devices do those functions than an all-in-one (jack of all trades, master of none) unit.
