Thanks. I checked Ubuntu five years ago when I moved to Linux and decided to go with MInt instead for one main reason - I don't want a desktop full of giant icons whenever I want to open something. I want a text list in alphabetical order, and not in the centre of my 50" 4K monitor. For me, it's like someone has slapped me in the face having that jump up at you. I also want a panel at the bottom where I naturally look, not way up there at the top right. I'm hooked on Cinnamon as my DE and don't intend to change.

You can move the panel. You can pin all your regularly used programs to the panel. I have ZERO icons on my desktop and a small panel along the bottom that hides when an application wants the space. UI Tweaks allows you to set the top bar to disappear also. You want a menu driven UI? ...Install Openbox window manager and boot Ubuntu into that. Dude, this is Linux, you can do anything you want though I would have thought that someone who rocks a 50" 4K monitor would already have known that. smh...

@@johnc3403 Good to know, thanks. I only tried it with a live stick for a half hour and hated it. Been using Mint for 5+ years and happy with that, so can't imagine changing unless it were to LMDE.

@@johnc3403 Good to know, thanks. I'm happy with Mint, though, so will likely stay with that.

I moved from Mint to Fedora spin KDE plasma 6 and wayland because I wanted better size of the text. In mint you only have 100% or 200%

@@Maisonier I scale the font in "font selection" - have to because of the 4k monitor or can't read anything.

I have not removed the snapd daemon from my 24.04 LTS system, however, I have removed all the snap programs such as Firefox, Thunderbird and others. I reinstall the .deb version of Firefox using the Mozilla PPA then using nala to reinstall it.

This man fixes Ububtu with a few steps. 1. remove snap, replace with Flatpak 2. add Firefox, Flatpak and KeepassXC Repos (I hope he did that, Flatpak Firefox has no filesysten sandboxing) 3. Use BTRFS and Timeshift 4. Use hardware enablement for a recent kernel 5. Use Ubuntu Pro for security backports for other packages (6. enable automatic background updates) Linux Mint has Debs for Firefox, and Thunderbird can be used as Flatak with no issue (as it doesnt need filesystem sandboxing)

As I have had only good experiences with image-based distros, and dont want to rely on a package manager to keep my system running.

Guy apps will be snap based. OS, desktop, will be kept on deb packages. The money come from servers and companies will not accept a snap based foundation. Snap has some good things in server although, like lxd, microk8s, microceph. The integration they made to work out of the box is great for small companies to setup easy at small scale what the big guys do at big scale.

I bounced between many distros then made a perfect custom distribution for me based on Ubuntu 20.04. I used cubic to make the actual iso file to use in multiple systems I have to make a new one soon.

I run Ubuntu Studio 22.04. You said your Logitech webcam works with no problems? I have a Logitech streamcam webcam and I cannot get it to be recognized. I have tried everything. I have the right USB port. But I have tried cheese etc and none of them see it.

Long term Ubuntu Mate user went to Mxlinux a few years ago. Less problems, more drivers in the repos, and 32bit and 64bit so I don't have to replace perfectly good hardware.
