Educational Coaching for College Students with Developmental Disabilities: An Emerging Best Practice on Campus
This webinar will provide an introduction to educational coaching, which supports student skills in the following areas: organization, executive functioning, study habits, stress management, self-advocacy, social interaction, and ability to navigate and access resources on campus and beyond. Recent data suggests that educational coaching is effective in enhancing the persistence and success of college students with developmental disabilities, such as autism and intellectual disability, who represent a growing student population on college campuses. Within the California Community College (CCC) system, educational coaching has been used successfully with autistic students and students with intellectual disability in the College to Career programs, available at 8 colleges statewide. However, the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office has designated educational coaching as an allowable expense within broader Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) funding - paving the way for expanded availability of this support service. Thus, this webinar will also discuss how educational coaching fits into the broader vision for the CCC and share practical information to support wider scale implementation in the CCC system.
