How brave to make this film in 1919. And now here we are in 2020 and some people on our planet earth still can't take a hint, won't listen to reason, refuse to accept the truth... The truth of our hearts and spirits. Our stories, history, and legacy need to be heard and understood not just for our sake but for the sake of our entire species. At least, that's my conviction/commitment/respectfulOpinion

It inspired the 1961 British film "Victim," which I found online a few years ago. With another famous and brave main actor, Dirk Bogarde.

No not a remake, let's create a time machine to get Conrad Veidt in either a remake or atleast to save the footage. I just want the full movie, I don't care about weird cuts etc.

Is the UCLA restored version available to watch anywhere? I cannot find it and that's... sad. What's the point of restoration if the film will continue to remain unseen, tucked away in a file cabinet somewhere outside of special viewings?

Progressive growth and renaissance always seems to be followed with vicious backlash. I like to think there was an elderly person who was only alive long enough to see this film finally represent him/her, and be filled with hope that Magnus’s work on sexuality could lead to a better world, and that the horrid Victorian repression they lived through would soon be over. I like to think they died with that hope before the Nazis brutalized this progress, and that if we keep this history close to us as we try to make a better world for queer people, we will be fulfilling that hope today. It should have happened sooner, but we won’t stop until it happens.

Hi Steve, the UCLA version has not been released on home video. It is indeed based on the earlier Munich Filmmuseum restoration. Luckily, we are offering a free virtual screening this Thursday at 4 p.m. (Pacific Time). Thanks for your interest! www.cinema.ucla.edu/events/2020/12/10/different-from-the-others

The music is "Salut d'amour" by Sir Edward Elgar. He wrote for his wife. It was a piano solo but this duet with violin is very popular.
