A life-altering change of perception of life or worldview happened to me while contemplating the distant future and the depths of time. The usual limited futures we tend to put on our thinking and awareness are fairly short. The futures we think of are years, decades, occasionally centuries out, but very rarely longer. The future evolution of technology becomes quite interesting as the future is extended. What will things be like in several hundred years? Or several thousand years? Some bristlecones are still alive after five thousand years. You can stretch your imagination back to those days in Egypt. You can stretch back maybe ten thousand years. But there are futures, and future technologies and other developments, ranging out much much farther - hundreds of thousands of years, and millions of years - hundreds of millions of years. By then the continents will have drifted thousands of miles and will have collided and joined, and they will look very different. Countries, if there are still nation states, will have come and gone. There will be new races and species. Radically new sciences, understandings, probably new types of mind and awareness. And if time is infinite, then there are hundreds of trillions of years in the future, trillions of trillions of years, and far beyond that. . Everything takes place against this backdrop, and the presence of the infinite. We are usually caught up in one little theater or enclosure of limited thoughts and awareness. One small scene surrounded by a vast cosmos. We lose track of the vast setting, the context; we are conditioned to be fixated on a few very local things with a very localized (localized in time and in space) worldview.
