Sleep is an essential key to healthy aging and living longer. The right amount of good sleep matters since this is how our body recovers from the different activites we've done throughout the day. We need rest every single day or our body will give up. Sleep also affects our mood and mental health, just like how a complete good sleep gives you so much energy for the day and you're ready to take on everything comning your way focused and ready. This ultimately affects the socila relationships you have because better sleep just lifts your overall mood, so there is an increased chance to enjoy every moment with the people around you instead of moping around. Thank you so much for talking about how important sleep is, you remind us of the amazing health and wellness coaches here at Reviving Mind who help older adults live their best lives happy and healthy.

Downloading to watch in full later. My condition of Fibromyalgia has caused me over many yrs before my diagnosis to Sleep. Sleep. Sleep ... Never wake refreshed.. takes me till 2 3 pm to function well ... I've always loved my sleep....

i'm old and still working and covid gave me the great gift of becoming a remote worker where i no longer have to waste hours of time commuting, which has helped me tremendously with getting enough rest!

I find that 3 main disciplines help keep me sleeping well, and being rested: 1. Schedule, 2. daily (outdoors) exercise, 3. not eating starch or sugars for dinner… the latter factor of starch, I’ve tested many times myself, and others verify this for their parts as well… interesting, but logical, since starch is fairly close to easy energy sources, sugars in other words…

Carbohydrates are sugars _ no bread, noodles, rice, grains, or fruits.

@@28105wsking What you mean is that all these foods you mention have their own 'natural' sugars. This isn't the same as refined sugar and so forth per se.

Great presentation. I got alot out of this and will be sending to others. I broke my shoulder and didn't get any sleep for around 10 years and I went through hell, spending two three & sometimes four days away. I would say that this is what made me gain 4 stone in weight. I still don't sleep well, but getting better at it. I will take on board what is a great a learning video for me I'm female 64 x

As a college student I never got the "study all night" thing. I knew that if I paid attention in class, did my reading and studied my notes and most importantly got a good nights rest, I was going to do great. And I did. Yay me!

Same thing. If i had a good night sleap and attended class i knew i will have focus to remember everything i hear there. I always took notes after clas not during because you loose focus when taking notes.

The part about insomnia is SO true. I'm a side sleeper and when I had hip-replacement surgery, I couldn't sleep on that side for the first 3 weeks (too painful) so I was only getting about 4 hours of sleep per night - mostly in a recliner in 1-2 hour-long increments - but that 4 hours was deep and refreshing! I suspected that my "body intelligence" wanted to move periodically to prevent blood clots so I didn't stress over it. As soon as I was able to sleep on BOTH sides, I returned to a more normal sleeping pattern - in my bed for 7-8 hours, waking only to change position or use the toilet. Stressing over sleeplessness is counterproductive.

Very unfortunate that your pre-surgical program did not mention that you could have spent time training yourself to sleep on your back. Even a few weeks of practice could have helped you. Rehab therapists are well aware of this, and if we can do pre-surgical lectures we will mention it.

I am female, 84 I am considered obese. I lost my lower jaw teeth bit by bit when I was in my late 50s early 60s. Obviously I must’ve snored badly because nobody wanted to sleep with me either. I have never been overly tired to fall asleep in the day until I got into my 80s and then I didn’t sleep well at all. I had to go to the bathroom quite often and I had great difficulty going back to sleep. Alsi I have always not been able to breath through my left nostril. Since I was 70 I also lacked jaw teeth on the bottom and Constantly snored at night. Of course I never kept my dental plate in at night, as per instructions. Recently I lost some of my front teeth and I decided I was keeping in my plates at night as I tend to drool at night without my teeth. That drove me nuts. The biggest surprise for me is that I am now sleeping all night without any trouble as far as I know, I’m not snoring. Of course I’m not sleeping with anybody and there’s nobody in my apartment but I’m pretty sure I’m not snoring. It’s the first time in 40 years that I have slept, got up to go to the bathroom And then went back to sleep. Just saying, there may be some pretty easy reasons for sleep apnea or just snoring. By the way I can breathe through both nostrils now at night.

This video is a gem! What an excellent teacher. This has answered so many questions and has so helped with understanding the things I’ve been hearing for years about sleep. I only understood a portion. This information is just WOW! Thank you❤️ also I am better armed to help others understand what goes on when we sleep. I’m a senior and a lot of people in my age group never heard many of the important points this video touches.

I think we know sleep has "great" benefits but unfortunately I have been trying to get quality and just SLEEP for a number of years. I think at one point in our lives, some traumatic incident happens and that haunts us forever...even if we are aware of why. I love to sleep; I yearn to sleep. So now to make up for sleep, I take naps. I know, that's not an answer. Listening to this speaker, maybe some items or points will sink in. I hope.

@Relaxing FirePlace 4K Agree with you 1000%! I don’t use alcohol, my second and last meal of the day is around 4:00 pm. In the morning I drink 1-2 cups of coffee and that’s it. Funny huh! After a year from that post my sleep is still screwy. I quit worrying about it. 😁

Yes, once I changed from thinking I should get 8 hrs to accepting my 6-7 I got about 100% happier. I also came to realize that a few hours a week are really sleep, although I have thought that they were waking.

Concerning 6:01 , In the Bible, death is referred to as sleep because one can be awakened from death (resurrection). That is why Jesus said Lazarus was sleeping.

When I got finals in my University, we had to memorize 60 artists slides of paintings,name of the artist, name of the painting, date by of the painting, date of the artist and the title of the painting and medium.I did cards and memorize each one minutes before falling sleep. Then on the exam we need to answer 20 and I got 💯. It’s amazing how this system works. If you need to memorize something do that it works. Also memory association, like if the painting had 2 people, the date was 1920 I associate 19 years old to one and 20 to the other and so on. It was fun 🤩!

My father is 96 sleeps very well, lives like a tortoise, never worries about anything, eats very little, spells words for me and gets out of a chair quicker than me lol. He turns logic on its head as his diet is crap and gets little to no exercise, I can only put it down to sleep apart from he is from a good genetic line of long livers.

As we get older our liver is less capable to store sugar . The one and only help for me is to fall back to sleep during the night is to eat something salty and sweet, only a few bites are enough to put me back. It is worth a try, may be it is all you need🙂

If anyone has never experienced legitimate long term insomnia probably doesn't know the horrible distress upon the nervous system...and, to try and deal with that nervous system distress, and while it might be compounded by the frustration level of the insomniac, even so, to suggest that all insomniacs can bring about healing and sleep by taking control, learning what's causing the problem, changing "maladaptive thinking" is bordering on cruel... This reminds me of the doctors who personally understand headaches, but, never a migraine, lecturing people who suffer from migraines... Even so, this is still one of the best lectures on sleep disorders...he appears to be a walking encyclopedia and that has been extremely helpful.

I think, personal opinion, that if you study really hard just like you did in University, that your brains will be tired enough to still get a lot of SWS deep sleep. Even as you age. Working out physically and mentally are both necessary.

I have no problem falling asleep...or even staying asleep. But can you tell me how to train my bladder--which has miraculously SHRUNK over the years--so that it doesn't wake me up 1, 2, 3 times a night?!?

My urologist had me give up all coffee, tea, and soda for 12 days. Made a huge difference. He said it was both the caffeine and acids in the drinks that irritate the bladder. I hate him.

Very interesting lecture..I have problem staying awake after eating. Can't drive after eating. Sleep well at night most of the time..making sure I get 40-50 min of sunlight every day..Early to bed..early to rise..between 8 and.9..up between 4 and 4am..!!!

one time i dreamed that i was doing squats; when i woke my legs felt like i had a good leg workout. another time i was dreaming and woke up; when i opened my eyes, i saw the pattern of the ceiling tiles, but when i closed my eyes, the dream played. it was like switching back and forth between two t.v. channels

If you take an acid locker because of stomach issues it blocks your iron absorption. You need to take your iron in the morning and take the stomach medicine at night.

MUTAZ , Thank you for mentioning Restless Leg Syndrome which seems to run in my family and it's absolutely impossible to describe what it feels like . I've tried almost everything to help ( as had my father and one brother ) as it's impossible to get off to sleep when the stupid twitching , jerking carries on . My husband doesn't believe RLS exists , i will show him your comment 😷 he owes me !

Your brain reorganizes and your body rests. Life developed with day/night with nothing much to do during the night cycle so developed a sleep time where the body re-organizes and rests.

Drugs should be a last resort yet many here are quick to prescribe their drug regimen to others, wo any formal knowledge of medicine or the patient. The lesson here is respect science, see a doctor about your medical challenges.

Im going to be 70 and back in the day when I vacationed with my friend they rolled me out on the Balcony on the portable cot... Back in the Day, 2 Queen sized beds and a reliable cot 2 friends in each bed and me on that Cot. Lol boy did we have fun on our Cheap Vacations in Fl. I was such a snorer drinking or not

Great Video , thank you Dr Laredo, I really enjoyed your excellent presentation. I would like to know if you have done experiments on your patients with Vitamin supplements, such as Vitamin B1 / Thiamin, vitamin C, Potassium, Magnesium and Salmon oil. As we age our metabolism slows down and the bodies don’t absorb enough nutrients through food alone, especially if we eat the wrong foods which was in my case. A complete change of diet, stop eating sugars, stop eating carbohydrates such as bread, cakes, and biscuits, I try not to cheat to often. I have been doing intermittent fasting for some time now, I sleep for seven to eight hours, then don eat breakfast until I am really hungry which is about 12 in the morning, this helped me loosing weight. I than have a reasonable big meal, I try not to eat a too big a meal at night, also not to late at night which is between six and seven pm, I take the vitamin supplements with my meals. This has stopped my sleep apnea’s, restless legs, chest pains, oedema, BP problems, it also stopped the feelings like not having had enough sleep after waking up in the morning, it also stopped the need for a having a nap in the afternoons. So true, sun exposure for 15 to 20 minutes per day, also helped my wife to fall asleep much easier. We both my do light to moderate exercise and breathing exercises. We are both 74 years and it feels as if we were in our fifties. Our skins have improved, no more aches and pains. It takes, the right mind set, a bit of will power and determination but but it is possible, you are right we stopped watching the tv especially all the drama the negative and bad news. It contaminates our thinking, we now watch more educational videos such as the video above instead. I am amazed how the body has a natural ability to heal and restore itself. I love your reply. You touched very important points a lot of people are clueless to. One being, (and it’s big!) is nutrition. I imagine you’re sharing your knowledge with your family and friends. I hope so because everything you mentioned that you guys do to take care of yourselves is spot on and quite brilliant.

@@cindyl3916 I agree w/you, he had excellent points .. As far as nutrition goes, I understand people not knowing and understanding it .. For me, I've been researching good nutrition for at least 6/7 years and it's something that I do enjoy learning about but as far as talking to family and friends, I myself find anyway, that most don't want to hear about it and are not as interested as I am .. It's such a controversial subject, even w/nutritionists and scientists themselves that actually study it all day/everyday, that I can completely understand why it just frustrates most people .. Even people who work out everyday and they think that they're eating healthy, aren't .. Thank God for the the internet, or I would still be one of those of people.

@@Katt_Geo Kathy, I so agree with you. People are confused and frustrated. They’re not secure with the knowledge or are unclear. It’s such a simple equation but hard for most to understand. My friend said to me...I eat cheese, it’s healthy! Those people! They don’t see the big picture and are unwilling to learn in my experience. My 75 year old aunt shut me down real quick. She says to me,....we can’t all eat like you. She has 12 bottles of meds, I take a diuretic for my cirrhosis. That’s it for medication from a doctor. I’m 62. My cirrhosis is irreversible I don’t have a choice but if I did I sure wouldn’t ever go back to eating what others consider “healthy “.

Have there been any studies relating dementia memory loss improvement to getting good sleep. Sleeping aids are typically not recommended for dementia patients, but this would suggest that perhaps they would be helpful???
