It’s 2024 and I’m listening to this because my daughter has a homework assignment with an excerpt of this lecture.

Scott Momaday has passed from this world. Yet I believe his spirit persists in all of us whom he has impacted. His words are in the wind, still swirling their energy over the America landscape. I am The Bear, reverberates.

I have been absolutely intrigued by this man, as I have just been introduced to a documentary film he narrated in 1976, 'More than just Bows and Arrows.' I am a mature student, who was raise in the SE corner of British Columbia, Canada and never throughout my Canadian education, was I aware of the 'real story' of the Indigenous population prior to colonization, or after for that matter. This film touch a cord with me and made me realize, how wrong we are to believe that North America is 'young in it's history' compared to Europe. I asked my professor, why it was that I had to wait 40 years before I understood the truth regarding the Indigenous population and Canada. Indigenous education, and specifically, this film, should be an integral part of Canadian history within the school system. Only through understanding, can we begin to correct the wrongs that were acted upon hundreds of years ago. I feel truly honored to have seen this film and I thank you Scott Momaday and my professor Randy Sawyer, for giving us this privilege.
