This movie is really personal to me. Let me tell u boys, here in India the population is so large. Our culture is like we should respect our elders no matter if he/she is wrong. We have a society which runs in mentality with " what will the world say?" This movie was something I could relate, I won't compare my dad to Ronit in movie but when I wanted to take Football/soccer he straight up made sure I won't, he grounded me and I was so passionate and used to go to football stadiums secretly for practices and sometime I got caught and my dad trashed me like anything and later he realised that and said it's for my own good so please study and said don't be like him(he meant uneducated and low level income where he was not very well respected)(I was good in academics). We have so much competition that unless u are the best in that field we won't be recognised plus Nepotism is high not just in Bollywood but real world too. And the struggle is not just like earning less and being happy but here it's like living in poverty and if you take a job, you cannot return. We also do not leave our parents in their old age which is okay for us but sometime the load of responsibilities and guilt won't let us persue personal dreams. I GAVE UP ON MY DREAMS TO SUPPORT MY FAMILY. But I won't ever do the same to my Kid If I have any (cos I'm kinda afraid I would be like my dad) I love my dad but still I don't love him for decisions he took for me but that's life. I hope the new generation will learn that we are born to live our life and not to fulfill expectations. And won't force their childrens. It's quite late for me but I'm working towards my other dream and If I get slight opportunity I won't let it go this time. I'm done yet not done 😔

This movie was personal to me too.. I relate to this a lot.. growing up my father was physically abusive towards me and my mother.. he always used to break down and cry and we tried to help him recover.. he had a failed bussiness and lost a lot of money.. he got into drinking and gambling and lost more money and he vented the anger towards me and my mother.. he never changed.. everyday we lived in anxiety.. I was scared everytime he came home drunk.. because I knew what was gonna happen.. we endured this for 14 years... We had no support and relatives only told us to endure as it will become better.. it never did.. it became life and death situation... and finally my mother had enough and left him... And I moved in with her.. the irony in this is.. that society shamed my mother for divorce and not my father for the abuse.... My father remarried and continued with his abusive behavior... And now he lives alone and sometimes contacts me abuses me and blames me and my mother for his shittu life...

Parenting here is based on a lot of beliefs. Elders, especially parents, expect respect even if they're abusive terrible people. They are put on a pedestal, a lot of songs are made comparing parents to God, which is problematic. Also, children are expected to also financially contribute to the family when they're old, probably one reason why parents want the kids to take safer more financially rewarding careers. You can't just let the kids be, coz they're yours to own, almost like an investment. There is a lot of guilt tripping on the lines of I gave birth to you, so how can you not listen to me.. child protection services would just provoke a furore in this belief system.

@@shailendra.singh.rathore Actually, she is understating it. There are upsides to living the way Indians do, with close-knit families et al. But when parents are abusive or toxic, this enmeshment and preoccupation with Indian values can become a noose around your neck.

@@AB.11-z5q but its much better when you are living in close knit families when either of parents are toxic because there will be other family members who can help you ,,, an abusive indian parent is jsut the same as an abusive parent in usa ,,, the families that are constantly in touch with each other and are more close knit together are less likely to be separated ,, the biggest problem in indian family value is the patriarchial character ,, if we can somehow remove it then our society would become much better ,,

While watching the movie I felt like I was watching myself and trust me, Ronit Roy, in this movie was really nice, gentle and sweet compared to what my Dad was. 10 years ago I ran away from home to become a writer and had a very bad relationship with my father for many years but now things are better, he is proud of me and his thinking has really changed. As a young girl, I was most afraid of my dad, at the same time I dont think anybody loved me more than my dad, his life was dedicated to his family, his kids, he was very strict expecting us to do well in studies, not wasting away time, I used to hate it espec looking at other dads but now as an adult I credit all my success only to my dad, he was being a parent making sure i did not get dustracted at that vulnerable age, he may not have allowed me to do certain things becos he was only preparing me to be fit enough to earn a livlihood, his methods may have been wrong becos he knew no other way but his intentions not. He is such a relaxed old man today becos he no longer carries the burden of that responsibility and he is proud of his kids. Today I pursue many things I want, I will be able to allow my kids to pursue what they want becos my dad made me capable of that. Many Indians are like me, parents are not villians in our lives, they are our blessings.

Now, here I am seeing a hell lot of hate for the so called loveless fathers. Not that they don't exist, they do, infact in large numbers. But India is a country of large population, so everything gets amplified , there are multiple things to be touched here and I am a millenial, so don't blame me of being of old generation. India, was a country and is still for a lot of people where people live in a hand to mouth condition, they have to struggle for 2 square meals also. So, here parents who do even moderately good for their children have to sacrifice a loooottttt. Sometimes, they have to sell the only piece of land they have to afford the education of their children and live lives of labourers .I personallly know 3 such students, who are my peers. And such people are no less than gods, honestly. For the most part, here fathers don't show the affection they have for their children (especially sons), that's not because they don't love them, that's because they are taught from the childhood that men don't show emotions, they don't cry and fathers are like the bitter pills who you hate because he's strict but he still remains strict knowing full well that his son is hating on him for this reason just because it's good for his son........... FATHERS ARE ALWAYS PORTRAYED IN A WRONG LIGHT DESPITE THEIR EPITOME LOVE, SACRIFICE AND HARDSHIPS THEY SUFFER which they never let us know......... I realised this thing not so long ago, but yeah!! things portrayed in the film are also not unheard of..

Very well said. I agree with everything you wrote about the lack of expression of love by a parent being misconstrued as the lack of love itself. I'd like to add that being strict and being abusive are two very different things. Here the father was abusive. Being strict is not all that bad. Growing up my mom was way more strict than my dad and I thank her for making me the person I am. Strong and able to pick myself up whenever I stumble. I know I pushed myself towards excellence (not that I achieved excellence - but anyway) because I knew my parents expected it of me and also genuinely believed I could do it. For the most part, the intention of the parent is rarely ever a selfish one - its just that they are as liable to making wrong judgement calls as any human.

Since you asked.... no there is no child protective service in India. In fact, when I first came to US, the idea that a child needs to be protected from its own parents was a culture shock to me. After 17 years, it still does not sit well with me. After hearing about the things that happen in foster care, I am sorry but I strongly believe a child should be separated for parents only in extremely extremely extremely extreme circumstances, when every other option has been exhausted.

When you were reviewing the movie, I watched the trailer again and cried and came back here. It didn't go to the Oscars. There is a reason why India would never win an Oscar, a potential winner never gets picked coz there seems to be power plays at different levels even for something like sending an official movie to a competition.

This movie doesn’t mean that India has a lot of abusive fathers. This is not the norm here but an exception. In this culture, the interference of parents in a child’s life is more than the Western culture. It has its positives and negatives but that is also the reason that we respect and look after our older people.

So this sort of physically and emotionally abusive relationship isn't just common with sons and dads in India, but also moms and daughters. My mum stopped physically abusing me ENTIRELY because our dad moved us to the US and warned her about Child Protective Services Until I went off to college, she continued to emotionally abuse me by threatening to take me back to India if I "stray". To this day, she thinks that is good parenting and the reason my sibling and I are successful in life. Abuse like this is hard to shake off because it convinces you on some level that you deserve it, and even when you know you don't, the biological programming to crave parental validation prevents you from taking a stand for yourself and use tools like Child Protective Services against them. Unlike the dad in this movie, parental abuse is much like abuse of other domestic kinds, the person abusing you has also convinced you with just enough kindness that they do this because they love you, and you have forced them to treat you this way. You may be able to run away from the person, or your relationship with them may change for the better, as it did with my mom, but it shapes you in fundamental ways that affects every other relationship in your life. Needless to say, this movie struck a deep deep chord with me and set me on the path to admitting to myself that I didn't deserve it and confront my mom. It came out when I graduated from college, and only then, well into my 20s, it occurred to me for the first time, that her threat to call the police every time I go out with my friends is completely hollow because, well, I am in my mid-20s! Who went out with her friends of her own free will. That is how long it took me to make that simple connection.

Although there is some beating from youngsters on their parents on comments below the reason for parents for being so pushy is because of the time they themselves grew up. It was a socialistic closed economy, no jobs unless u did great I studies, no social security programs, no child services except nonprofits. So if a kid didn’t do great in school and went into professional degrees he will basically b nothing and not even be able to have a basic job and b super poor. Poor in india means no food no house living on streets and living like a hobo. So poverty in us or earning base wage is very different.

In India, drinking age is just another rule. If you're caught you're caught but mostly people start drinking way earlier. In many families, Dads invite their sons to drink. And at some places, the age is 18, somewhere it is 21 and somewhere it is 25 but as India goes, rules and laws don't matter much here.
