For that invisible barrier part, you could have the biker gang messily line up their bikes to block the exit. That way it's more "natural" to the theme of the bikers. Just an idea but I hope it could serve you well in some way.

For the invisible barrier you could make more gang models and have them stand in the open space, and once the player gets too close they push him back to the intended area

@@AaronMYoung Since you might run into this in future scenarios without obvious fixes that have already been suggested, you could simply make a distance trigger and if the player moves too far away, have it flash a warning that they are about to fail because they are too far from the area. It's a form of invisible wall that seems more acceptable.

@@AaronMYoung or just use bykes as the barrier since they are already their. This fog effect could be there as well just for more indication that the passage is block but with the bykes standing you won't break the immersion

For the inventory system it'd work best if the background blurred and darkened slightly to allow the player to focus better on the items. I think the invisible barrier should only appear specifically where you don't want the player to wander out of the area, so around the entrance and exits to locations.

5:43 I find it strange when you click the right pointy hand it goes to the left object. That seems unintuitive. I understand that it it is the direction of the rotation. But most people are going to expect if you click the right hand, it will go to the next object, on the right.

try lerping movement vector to zero if direction is out of bounds. invisible walls sliding is just ugly

This is fantastic! Enjoying every new devlog. When I see such a project, I understand that the full potential of the PS1 was not realized in the past years, as the development of technology quickly went up and most developers were chasing for more realistic graphics. It's like a new wave or rebirth of Playstation 1.

What is it about the PSX style graphics that makes it look so amazing? I mean, Hogwarts Legacy, A Plague Tale, etc., they all look gorgeous, but what you're making is absolutely stunning and definitely attracts me more than any next-gen game, hands down.

I have the same feelings for PSX or PSX style games, the crunchiness, or the way lighting looks just hits the spot for me! the vibes and atmosphere of that era is unmatched today!

Why not to make actual invisible wall and when player collider hits it make him stop and saying somethig like "Im not gona leave right now"?

@@AaronMYoung or do like gta does. if player is too far from fighting spot show U SUK screen. once the player discovers this mechanic he wont run away anymore and no invisible walls.

For more open areas you can have the player turn around and take A few steps back instead of invisible walls. (RE2 remake does something similar)

not sure if you did this simply to demonstrate the fog barrier, but if the area is already gated, i don't think the fog is necessary

Alec's models are absolutely great. The proportions and details for so low poly are 10/10. Does he have any tutorials online with his workflow? Or any way he can be contacted? Keep up the great work! Looks fantastic :D

He is awesome at what he does. He doesn't have any tutorials, the characters in this video where made by me besides the boxing outfit and the opponent, they both got assistance from Alec.

Just curious, what made you continue the project in UE4? Is UE5 basically just like UE4 and not worth the trouble converting it to a UE5 project?

I attempted to port it to UE5 but I got a ton of errors, I don't think it's worth spending time getting it running (if it ever would) when the engine version I use is working perfectly for me. ALSO I feel like I'm spitting in the face of UE5 by ignoring all it's new amazing features so I can make a low res video game :'D

This is maybe a bit of a minor thing, but would you happen to have any advice for making PS1-style buildings with interiors? If you've covered this in a video before just a point in the right direction would be awesome. I'm just at a loss for how to approach the workflow and topology.

I work on the interior and exterior separately, I tend block out how I want the interior with the rooms etc.. then create the building shape around the interior.

I don't really like the solution for the invisible wall, what if the protagonist just says something like "I shouldnt go there" when is going outside the playable area and then stops

The style and models look really awesome. I've been trying to do something like that for a year now in Blender... never succeded. Is there any way to learn how to texture and animate that awesome?

Keep at it! KZbin has pretty much everything you need, I also recommend experimenting in your texture editor, familiarising yourself with the tools available.

I have no coding skills at all other than Blueprints, I'm not that smart if I'm honest I happened to find my feet with visual coding and even then I keep finding ways to improve my blueprinting skills :)

Just an imho, but fingers are a bit confusing. I would assume it points at the next object, not the direction the wheel will spin. A minor thing tho, probably will just take a couple missclicks to get used to.

Pretty much, I find it's best to start with a completely dark scene and add lights in the areas you want :)
