I'm a 2nd-degree brown belt in Uechi Ryu karate. I studied in Okianaw and tested before Master Kanei Uechi on several occasions. It was an honor to have him award me my certificates. I will never forget it. Al Akiyama was my sensei while in Okinawa, JP.

When you see Uechi Kanei doing the original Sanshin you can really see where it was originally intended to teach the use of the Sai. Same with Seisan. It's good to see someone doing it so shortly before the purpose of the form was changes.

I'm not so sure, the Sai would poke you in the side on the draw back if you did these movements with it. It's an interesting premise though. So maybe doing it wrong? Just recently it's been suggested that sanchin is a pummeling drill. Pummeling is a common wrestling maneuver used to get underhooks in grappling/wrestling. It makes sense when combined with the crescent stepping to get inside hooks on your opponent. But the Sai answers alot MORE questions quite well. However some of the Kata only make sense when considered as grappling maneuvers, without weapons in hand. But maybe grappling AGAINST someone with weapons in hand.

@@navigatingel6104 In my classic Uechi-Ryu book by George Mattson, he mentions that, though Uechi doesn't teach weapons, the Sai figures largely in the style for some reason. That would explain the spearing hand thrusts (which, by themselves, would never do anything to an opponent), the blocks which look like what you would do with sais held in reverse grips, even the way the fingers are typically held in Uechi. As for Sanchin, I believe you are onto something there. Wing Chun's "Bil Jee" form's actual applications, when looked at in styles much older than the Yip Man version, HAS NO FINGER STRIKES; the applications are all stand-up grappling, essentially a couple of simple elbow lock takedowns repeated in different directions with a few lower palm strikes sprinkled in (check out Pan Nam Wing Chun Bil Jee). The part where the practitioner holds both hands over his head, then throws them towards the ground has been interpreted (laughably) as powerful finger jabs to a downed opponent's abdomen, though any grappler will recognize it as representing a Judo-type shoulder throw.

@@varanid9 I have a question for you, Sir? Have you received a decent Shuto, (spearing hand thrust) to the ribs, solar plexus, or tender facial tissue areas? In my experience as an Uke, these can do some decent stinging, to say the least..
