West Germany and the Netherlands were the up- and-coming powers in European football then and England, representing the old guard, was on the wane at the time, probably lingering still on the memories of 1966. This match always reminds me somewhat of the footballing lessons the great Hungarian team of the 1950's gave the Three Lions in 1953 and '54, something of a shock for England and the English footballing press, but then again, that was no harm. They need a come-uppance every now and again. 😌
@RadicalCaveman10 ай бұрын
Probably true, but England was much more in the fight here than in '53 and '54 against Hungary. In this one, they had been building up for a long time toward Lee's equalizer and it looked like they'd earned at least a draw.

The tragedy is that in the 70's England could have been doing the same as the Germans with some thought, better management and more professionalism from the players. Unfortunately none of those things happened. German and English players had a lot in common; physically strong, durable and never gave up but the Germans had better technique and were able to add flair to their other qualities. The Germans did not cross long balls to the far post; they played a lot of one-two’s and angled passes, especially to front players and tried to reach the foot farthest away from the marker.
