UFC 298: Volkanovski vs. Topuria is an upcoming mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship that will take place on February 17, 2024, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, United States.
Alex Volkanovski will put his UFC featherweight title on the line against Ilia Topuria in February. Volkanovski (26-6) finished Yair Rodriguez in last outing at UFC 290 in July. He's successfully defended the title five times and considered by some to be the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Topuria (14-0) is ranked fifth in the 145-pound division. He's coming off an unanimous decision win over Josh Emmett in his last fight in June.

As a Hawaii born big fan of Max I disputed Volk beating Max the first two fights, especially the 2nd fight but Volk won me over in the end and proved he’s just a damn beast. Volk won that first fight against Islam IMO and made a poor decision taking the rematch on short notice then got knocked out but I don’t think it discounts how good he is. Volk is a P4P fighter in the world going up against a guy as good as Islam having a huge size disadvantage and putting to him is so impressive. Then in his own weight class nobody has been even close to Volk he’s been in a league of his work at featherweight.

I like a lot Topuria but that does not mean that he is capable to defeat Volk for the following reasons: 1. Topuria does not have (yet) championship durability 2. He mentioned he will tap out Volk - he won't be able to get a hold of Volk since the ground game that Volk has is impresive 3. Strike wise can be a little bit competitive since both have a really great striking game. Volk has fought the elite on his category; Aldo, Mendez, Ortega, Holloway, etc. in the other hand Topuria has not

You have just said Alex has the most experience, but that's pretty much irrelevant. My prediction: Neither fighter will dominate. It will be a hard fight for both fighters. Volk, Max and Topuria IMO are the best 3 at 145. I am only giving Volk a slight edge in this fight.

Topuria is a fighter who has to settle into his rhythm & Volk is better than anyone at disrupting his opponents rhythm with feints, punches and leg kicks. Jai Herbert clipped Ilia a lot but Alex is another animal and he knows how to find the target and pile on the pressure. I do not see Ilia taking Volk down and if he does I don't see him holding him down. So it all comes down to who will mix it up the best. We could even see Alex take Ilia down and work ground and pound. Alex has a massive wing span and reach but these two are complete fighters with loads of confidence. The only thing on Volks's side is his experience under the bright lights.

Anyone can get caught with a head kick or KO punch..Volk is a very smart, strong, fast, fighter with ultimate cardio..If Volk fights smart, without trying to prove something, and stays out of the phone booth with Topuria, Volk will demolish him..I think Volk can stay out of range, jab him, take him down and ground and pound him..If Bryce can get him down and hold him down, Volk will ground and pound him..

One thing I will say is that Ilia is not Islam. Islam is a very special fighter and is levels above the other lightweights (excluding possibly Arman). Volk went UP a weight class to fight him at lightweight... Logically, it's just hard for me to imagine him losing to Ilia back down at 145. Although it could happen, I just don't see it happening.

I think Volk will have the striking advantage due to his longer reach and his movement. But he’s been knocked down and hurt by many of his opponents before (Max dropped him, Islam dropped him, Yair, even Ortega). And none of those fighters have heavy hands like Topuria does. He one shot KOed a big lightweight in Jay Herbert. If Topuria manages to control distance and traps Volkanovski against the fence… he could find that shot. And if he does I don’t think Volk can take it, even more taking into account he comes from a head kick KO. I don’t think Ilia will dominate on the feet tho, and I dont see him just taking Alex down. Still, the chance of the knockout is considerable. I’d go 55%-45% Volkanovski.
