So many people have said “Volk was winning until this point” Ilia knew he just wanted Volks back against the cage. Even Volk stated he knew that’s what he had to avoid. Yeah sure Ilia was wearing the jab on his face and he took some other shots, but he KNEW he was gonna stone Volk. To walk Volk down and weather the storm because you KNOW you’re gonna KO him when you land flush during a blitz is crazy confident. What are you jabbering about? He was reaching n lunging, falling off balance into any stance switch you seen, which is the ONLY TIME he did it in the fight. He had one moment of success in 2 rounds of fighting. He was getting TOUCHED UP every minute of EVERY ROUND by Volk, AT WILL! Voly was jabbing, kicking, stance switching n making him lunge at shadows. He was getting BEAT, until he wasnt, which says more about Volks schedule over the previous 17 months than it says anything about Toporia, who is a worthy title challenger, a quality fighter, but the result of that fight doesnt tell the true story of the fight & Toporia still has a whole hell of a lot to prove, & you better believe Volk is sitting on the sidelines n looking at the positive 8:25 of their 8:30 fight.

People wonder why Ilia is the favorite against Max, or why many people believed Ilia would beat Volk. Those who really know combat sports know that fights are analyzed by the fighter's skills, by his technique. Ilia is one of the most technical fighters who has ever existed, if not the most. Obviously there are other factors to consider such as experience, level of opponents, surprise factor, etc. And that is the only reason why the fight with Volk and Max is so difficult to predict, Ilia needs to prove himself more, because just based on technique, he APPEARS to be better by far.

Yeah, I think Ilia might be the chosen one of this era. He has more to prove, but his skills and mindset look good enough to do it. He might set the bar at a new height. The fight against Max will show a lot. I would love to see Evloev against him, but the UFC has been keeping him from the belt because he wins by decision. Diego Lopes is doing well, but I don't see him beating Ilia. He also has to beat Volk again after his brain is good, Ilia will probably win that, he looked like the predator in this fight the whole time to me.

Anyone else think people are putting too much stock in Topuria’s knockout of Volk? It seems like the narrative really is, “Will Topuria knockout Holloway?” It’s definitely possible (given that it’ll likely be a mostly boxing match), but Topuria only has 1 knockout in his top-15 fights. Though Volk is his 1 KO in the top 15, there is an asterisk when you knockout someone who got KO’ed in his previous fight AND is over 35 (in the lighter weight classes). I still think Topuria’s the favorite, but Max has a historic chin and Topuria is not actually the knockout artist his Volk win would suggest he is (if you look at his record at the top of the division).

The thing with Topuria is he's getting better and deadlier with each opponent so his ceiling is always rising, he's a real problem. Forget the weak Volk narrative, Topuria has a complete skillset on his feet that if he pairs with takedown defence will take him very far. He may dominate this weight class till it gets boring.

You could definitely tell Volkanovski was about 50% and mentally compromised. Never has he snapped his head back during a punch or backed up during a kick. That Islam head kick put him in a 90 day concussion protocol with no contact so he probably had a 2-3 week camp. He's also been dropped by many fighters.
