UFOs over Nuremberg, 1561

Ever wonder where the banner image on our website and social media pages comes from? It's a composite image based mostly from a 16th-century woodcut depicting a UFO sighting over Nuremberg, in modern-day Germany. As well as producing a captivating illustration, the sighting is a good example of an early-modern "wonder-sign," long before the term UFO ever entered the lexicon, and before anyone suspected extraterrestrial culprits.

Something similar - dogfighting UFOs - occurred in 1950 over Farmington, New Mexico. Hundreds of objects were seen at once and for hours, some objects flying in groups forming squares like in this 1561 incident. It went on for three days. Research 'Farmington Armada' for witness interviews.

A special note I'd like to add since it wasn't mentioned in the video: the "black spear-shaped apparition" shown and described at 4:32 has been noted by researchers as being strikingly similar to the "Black Triangle" variety of UFO that is frequently described by modern witnesses. I want to let the team at Think Anomalous know while I enjoy every video they produce, episodes like this that bring greater attention older and lesser known historical instances of anomalous phenomena are especially appreciated. Episodes like this along with your analysis of the Abduction of Jacob Jacobsson or Hieronyma and the Incubus allow people; especially people new to or unfamiliar with the world of Anomalistics; to see a broader spectrum of what constitutes the study, as well as to understand that such phenomena are not even close to something that could be described as an "exclusively modern" occurrence. Thank you again for another excellent episode. As always I look forward to more; as the only downside that Think Anomalous has ever had is we just can't get our fix fast enough.

I keep coming back to this one and find it fascinating. There's a purity about it, it's from a time when there was no UFO lore and while their frame of reference was more religious there was also far less reason to just make stuff up. Recording this event took time, money and education that was in short supply so it can be deemed to be a very significant event.

There's no one single easily digestible piece of content that you can show somebody to convince them of the full scale of the peculiarity of these cases. Edit: While I agree with raksh9's idea of making a video comparing faerie abduction cases with contemporary disappearances. I must admit something didn't sit right with me about Dave denying you the right to make an obviously fair use video about some of the cases he's covered as if he own's the copywrite to missing person cases just because he's covered them in his books. Surely he should want this information to be spread to as wide an audience as possible, rather than try to garner as much profit from these tragedies as possible. While I have a great deal of respect for Dave and the work he does, such behaviour challenges that respect.

It's a baffling modern-day mystery and Mr. Paulides is the face of the research on it, so it's sad to find out his preference is to see it not promoted by other organizations even if they're offering to make it a collaboration. That being said, if Think Anomalous were to produce an independent video on the topic of the phenomenon and simply explain/mention and use data from Paulides' Missing 411 Project (it's kind of impossible to talk about such a subject without that happening since like I said he's the face of the research on that topic), that would be completely acceptable and something I would wholly look forward to. Making the Missing 411 Project a component of the subject rather than the focus itself would allow your video to be wider in scale and be able to analyze the phenomenon in its whole context rather than just its modern context studied by Paulides. Please pursue this opportunity. Don't let Mr. Paulides declining of a collaboration effort turn you off from the subject entirely. Not only is this a great example of a modern anomalous phenomenon that is in dire need of more attention and study, but it's also a topic that at least already has SOME exposure which means that a video on it would attract a large number of viewers, which would help bolster Think Anomalous to achieve more popularity on KZbin and reach new people.

5 years later, southwest of Nuremberg in the Swiss border town of Basel: “It happened in 1566 three times, on 27 and 28 of July, and on August 7, against the sunrise and sunset; we saw strange shapes in the sky above Basel. During the year 1566, on the 27th of July, after the sun had shone warm on the clear, bright skies, and then around 9 pm, it suddenly took a different shape and color. First, the sun lost all its radiance and luster, and it was no bigger than the full moon, and finally it seemed to weep tears of blood and the air behind him went dark. And he was seen by all the people of the city and countryside. In much the same way also the moon, which has already been almost full and has shone through the night, assuming an almost blood-red color in the sky. The next day, Sunday, the sun rose at about six o'clock and slept with the same appearance it had when it was lying before. He lit the houses, streets and around as if everything was blood-red and fiery. At the dawn of August 7, we saw large black spheres coming and going with great speed and precipitation before the sun and chattered as if they led a fight. Many of them were fiery red and, soon crumbled and then extinguished.”

I've witnessed a Sundog event but I can not see how I would interpret this as anything at all like what happened in Nuremberg. Not to mention these are and were phenomena humans have been quite aware of since before historical record. The idea of a collective unconscious is a bit far fetched however if as we know now human consciousness can and absolutely does have an effect on the quantum reality it this had an effect on all of reality. Such as to say if we collectively believe or one of such strong will believes in something that something may come into being and as we disbelieve perhaps we remove things as well from our collective reality. Magic and Relifious Mirackes being prime examples. However there truly doesnt seem to be any collective belief for what was seen here... or was there? Perhaps in this case our lack of records has also lost a belief system or expectation based on a biblical or other superstitious or pop culture trend present and lost after the event. Every time I watch one of these videos it's the same process: I start to raise skeptic questions about the incident, the narrator raises those same questions, then counters them with more examples and details, basically justifying why the video was made and why the incident is worth discussion. Then, of course, he leaves an unbiased conclusion to ponder without leaning either way. This is how everything of this nature should be presented. Just the facts, the records, the details, with unsupported commentary presented as UNSUPPORTED commentary for you to draw your own conclusions from. This is why I always come back to this channel. It's so well done. Please keep making more and I'll support any way I can!

I've always thought that the "crescents" that "came out of the sun" sound to me like the boomerang craft seen by Kelly Johnson (and drawn by him for inclusion in the project bluebook file) as well as by the Minot air force base B-52 pilots that described the exact same shaped vehicle. Next you have the "cylinders" with balls along their length and darting in and out of them, which is exactly what was filmed in Salida Colorado. If you slow down that film a frame at a time, you can see it isn't really a cylinder, but a flat object with lights around the rim that is rotating left, then right, then left etc. very quickly, and can only be seen edge-on due to some sort of optical illusion similar to a spinning wheel the appears to rotate in the opposite direction when it reaches a certain speed (I have no explanation for the appearance of only ever being seen edge-on from any direction that it is seen, but it could have something to do with whatever form of propulsion it's using or dimension hole it may be passing through, who knows. Then there are the small foo-fighter globes, that are described as "fighting" each other with some crashing in flames, which could have been a battle, or just an observation made to try and explain their quick movement that included flashes of bright light. Then the "black spear head" appears, which resembles the black triangular craft described many times, and all the others leave. Possibly the black triangles are the superiors, or they could be another race of beings that chased away the others. Either way, this broadsheet is possibly one of the most enigmatic pieces of art ever created.

I do think the occam's razor answer for this story is -- they saw some odd and very rare atmospheric optics, like a multiple display including sun dogs, halos, etc -- and through exaggeration and a game of telephone it got turned into this story of fighting primitives in the sky

Consider this: The orbs, supported by their transport ships (the tubes) were flying into the area of the sun and then back out. It seems they were attacking something present (hiding?) in the sky within the circle of the sun (not actually inside the sun itself) and were withdrawing after each attack. After an hour or so, all of the orbs and their tubes fell to earth on fire. Only the black spear-shaped craft remained. I propose that the orbs were attacking the spear-shaped craft which eventually prevailed. Were the orbs trying to protect us from the black spear-shaped craft? Are we seeing a battle between alien races?

Probably one of the most fascinating phenomena I've ever heard of. It's fairly close to where I live too, just like some of the other recorded incidents shown via the images here, like the Wunderzeichen in Regensburg. Seems that the sighting in Nuremberg and the one in Basel are similar but different years. Makes me wonder if there's an error in one of the years and both happened the same time. Maybe people in both towns witnessed it on the same day. Just a thought.

I don't buy the sun dog or ergot poisoning theories. But the first line, of the original description of the event, makes me wonder: "At first there appeared in the middle of the sun two blood-red semi-circular arcs ..." Could it have been a massive solar flare, like the Carrington event ..but even stronger. I've noticed countries like to call these historic events other things. But, massive solar flares occur evey 150 (or so) years. The next one, will destroy all electrics on Earth. And our leaders are well aware of them and their effects. The public, oddly less aware :)
