This was a fantastic video, Murph. Really appreciate your insight into the game. Agree that the 2020 defense had the higher ceiling compared to 2021, especially with such a talented secondary like you said. I think one of the biggest reasons that the 2020 team didn’t win a championship and the 2021 team did was strength of the offenses UGA had to face. The 2020 defense had to face 2 of the very best offenses we’ve seen in recent years in Florida and Bama. This past season, UGA faced some good offenses, but didn’t have to face 2 offensive juggernauts like the previous year. Alabama’s offense was still excellent, but was it better than 2020’s offense? I think that’s debatable. And Florida’s offense naturally took a step back with the loss of Trask, Pitts, Toney. Other than Bama, I think Georgia faced some very good offensive teams (Florida, Arkansas, Kentucky were all very solid this year) but nobody who was absolutely loaded like in 2020. With that, big props to Smart and Monken for finally being able to take advantage of a prime situation like this. It’ll be interesting to see what offenses in the SEC shape up to be next year, and whether or not we’ll see another offensive juggernaut outside of Bama. If not, I think next year’s team, like you mentioned, is perhaps even more talented than this year, and could be on their way to another championship.

Here’s another #RealFootballHead who understands how to watch and react! This is exactly what I asked for in the video: Reasons why you believe a team that had even more talent, like the 2020 UGA team had, failed to produce similar results as the 2021 team! AWESOME SHIT, SEAN!
@denniscarney52492 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree strength of schedule probably paid the biggest part, but I think people often overlook that "talent" doesn't always translate to performance. Like I say when I defend Walker being #1 OVR -- playing "within the system" (your assignments) is often more important than your athletic gifts. Now, given the Jags history coaching D-line I'm not saying my boy is going to be better than KT or even Hutch, but there's value in looking beyond stats. I'm not sure the 2020 team had as good assignment discipline as the 2021 team. Definitely feel certain players were too concerned with their stats.

Florida worries me. Stetson plays them historically poorly. It took our defense taking charge last year at the end of the 1st half, to win that game. I hope he gets rid of his jitters before we play Florida this year. I REALLY want our Dawgs to beat those lousy, stinking gators.
@EulogyfortheAngels2 жыл бұрын
It’s hard to debate that Bama’s 2021 offense was anywhere near the level of the 2020 offense. QB accuracy/QBR, WR production, RB production, offensive balance, offensive line play, player/position awards, ppg, etc. 2020 Bama averaged more points per game in an all-P5 schedule, and was never held under 31. 2021’s offense failed to reach 31 four times, and 2 of those instances weren’t against elite defenses.
I got to give props to Monken I thought he was a big reason for them improving from these 2 years. And I thought he had a good first year but he was almost perfect last year. That's why this team can win it all next year and repeat

Kirby is like Dabo in that respect, I think - he prefers to recruit. We had our biggest name transfer fall through at the last minute with Newman opting out of the COVID 2020 season, and I think Kirby would prefer someone he can get hyped and committed as an incoming freshman or redshirt than another transfer who won't have that loyalty. (Can't get mad at someone for thinking about number one, but Newman made the wrong decision and I will argue that for years to come.)

I tried to tell people we have so many guys coming back that were in rotation in 2021 especially on defense. They have all been waiting their turn just like Nakobe Dean, Quay Walker, Jordan Davis and more, those guys waited their turn and look what they turned into. People don’t understand that Georgia could be even better this year then last. Our offense will be improved in my mind, our defense can be just as great especially with Kirby and Will calling the plays two of the best defensive minds in CFB but it will take some stepping up if this defense wants to be that but honestly it gives them a challenge for this defense in 2022 to be just as good if not better which I like. Beware our TE group because we have 5 guys at TE that could start anywhere in the country and one of those guys as a freshman showed he was the best TE in the country Brock Bowers. Our WRs will be better as a whole in my mind this year. Running backs I still have to see when the season starts. Kenny and Milton are the next two guys up and played a lot Kenny more so then Milton but I expect Branson Robinson to get 15 carries to and who knows he could be that one in a lifetime back that starts all three years. If you follow CFB a lot you should just know that Georgia can be the next big team and already showed that in 2021. You can’t say they can’t do it because they have. I believe Stetson has his best year by far. The semi final game and National championship game he played great he did more than just help Georgia win he made throws to have Georgia win. His confidence and knowledge will be so much better now and I bet he uses his legs way more which makes his so damn dangerous.

One thing I heard about from the players in the off-season was their skull sessions and the new focus on teammates from across different position groups bonding, knowing each other’s “why”, building a deeper connection with your brothers. From a military background this is not an X’s and O’s on the field thing; but it is critical when you’re going to war to have your brothers backs and know they have yours. The way I saw that playing out is the complimentary football… Ie. Offense stepping up first half of Tennessee game when defense was getting their bearings straight, defense carrying the offense the first half of the Florida game when offense was struggling, our offense/Stetson having that clutch passing drive in the 4th qtr of the natty - followed by the grind it out kill the clock drive once the defense got that last critical stop. One final great example is the Clemson season opener… the offense played clock control/field position when we were battered by injury and the defense went out and made the play that ultimately determined the outcome (Chris Smiths pick-6). So I’d say where talent lacked the individual players and offense/defense covering each others backs and playing for one another made a huge difference. This can be boiled down to leadership and maturity imho. Excited for 2022.

I think I’m most excited about next year are the tight ends. Washington is good, Bowers is a monster and I’m telling you, Arik Gilbert has turned it around. Whatever was going on with him last year, UGA and Smart stood by him 100% and he is going to pay real dividends. He was already good, but their faith in him and support has caused him to buy into the UGA program 100%. Smart kept talking about him in spring training and Smart doesn’t do that very much because he doesn’t like to engage in “rat poison” but Gilbert’s leap and dedication was so profound he couldn’t help but talk about him. We all know what Stetson is and what he isn’t, but you give him the best tight ends in the country along with an Arian Smith to stretch the field…also, don’t sleep on Daijun Edwards either. I know Milton and others are primed to shine but Edwards has been doing mop up duty the last few years and runs like a freight train. Next years running back rotation will be reminiscent of when UGA had Chubb and Michel and Swift would come in with the knock out blow. Edwards will be the Swift this year…

The defense may drop off a little...may...but as you pointed out, a lot of those guys were waiting their turn. Last season (and I'm not sure who else but UGA fans know this) when games were put away in the 2nd half, a lot of the guys you mentioned came in and got some serious reps against other teams' 1s. Most of the TDs scored against UGA last year were against 2nd and 3rd string players. Speaking of 3rd string, Stetson Bennett was the 3rd string QB this time last year. He never worked out with the 1s until JT Daniels was injured. This year is a completely different story! Stetson worked out in the spring and he'll get fall to work with them. The thought of having 4 BIG TEs in at the same time must drive DCs nuts!! And lastly, Branson Robinson is gonna be putting a hurting on Ds after Kendall Milton and Kenny McIntosh come out of games. I can just see their reaction now when Mr. Robinson comes in the game! After watching some of his HS film, there are things that remind me of Herschel Walker more than any other back I can remember seeing. As a Dawg fan, I'm excited about this coming season! To play at an elite level at defense as Georgia has played in 21 and 22 you must have everyone to work together as one unit. Kirby has said that the 20 team were not able to communicate because of covid and it was hard to get everyone reading from the same sheet of music. Now that Kirby has the team bought in, the whole team is humming in tune, winning championships, gaining large amounts of exposure, raising the whole team's draft potential and providing leadership and shared experience for the next year of fresh talented highly sought-after recruits. A nice cycle when you get it together and Kirby has done a great job with this team. At the first of this year, Georgia was supposed to be in a rebuilding year after a record 15 players went into the NFL, yet the beat goes on, and UGA is in the CFP again with only one pier that can beat them, themselves.

Stetson Bennett doesn’t play defense, and it was clear UGS struggled with elite passing teams on defense as witnessed by losing to Alabama the same exact way with that crazy passing game it had. UGA just had about 7 first round picks come off that 2020 team and countless others in the rounds to follow. An injury to LeCounte, Davis and someone else shouldn’t have been tough to overcome with that type of depth. That is one of the reasons I made this video to dispel that notion.

They won it by making great adjustments both offensively and defensively and stuck to what their great at and it payed off. And also the belief they had the whole game that at the end they were gonna have that trophy in their hands not Bama
@wknight55952 жыл бұрын
You make yr case about who's there and coming back for 2022 UGA talent level. Can't win w/o talent for sure, and leaving injuries out of the equation, the biggest extra variable that will take a talented team to the top are motivation, attitude and work ethic. Nothing effects this more than a deep hunger to win, and UGA's 40yr championship drought was one hell of a motivator. We've all seen plenty of uber talented teams not live up to their potential. It's also more difficult to keep that drive after you just won it all, and why back to back championships are so rare. Conversely Bama also isn't lacking in talent and will be motivated af after that heartbreaking loss. They'll likely meet again in the SEC championship, and my money would be on Bama. Even Bama 2-0 if it came to that.

@franklin270h2 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree with you, line of scrimmage in particular on both sides and the secondary, the 2020 team should have had the highest ceiling of any of Kirby's teams to date. Part of it I think was Monken has been just a great hire and he's been there long enough that the players and he are more on the same page. Kirby can be muleheaded on some things but one thing I think he was alert to was putting a bigger emphasis on mental health and connection and sport psychology compared to years prior. The combo of stuff definitely seemed to help this year's team gel a lot more than others. I think there's room for growth there in football in general and beyond that really- college, life, workplaces.

Thanks, bro. I appreciate that. That’s literally the aim I go for: Locker room/barbershop talk…I will remind you that Stetson Bennett was a Heisman candidate early last season, though. Shit was annoying, but even ESPN Gameday ran a feature on him and how well he was doing because of that Tennessee game where he smashed it. And saying you “can’t score with those teams” is overlooking those teams TORCHED the defense. It wasn’t all about QB play as UGA wasn’t scoring a bunch of point in the Natty game, but the defense held serve long enough for the offense to make some key scores…

@@TopBillinSports The talent on NFL and top SEC schools are generally top notch. Take 2019 LSU. This team was described as business like. Practicing on their own on their off days. Maintaining grades. 10,000 catches per WR. They loved the grind, worked together, competed with each other unselfishly. The next two years. Decent and division, the talent still there, but outside non football influences tore that team apart. Bama’s roster was 84% blue chips, most in the nation. They also have the greatest coach of all time, heisman quarterback, and best defensive player in the nation.
