I remember reading the book series YEARS ago and I liked the books but I remember even back then thinking it would be impossible to make into a movie. Because I always took the "pretties" as being so unrealistic in the way they look, like the beauty standard was impossible to achieve without surgery and stuff. So the only way you can do that is with CGI and that would be very cheesy looking. And the specials were like kind of scary looking? Like I might be misremembering but I thought some of them had sharpened teeth and tattoos all over and a bunch of other enhancements?

Yeah, the specials were all generally scarier and "harsher" looking than a regular pretty. The ones you're thinking about tho, with the sharp teeth and the pulse tattoos are the "cutters" 😬 they're the ones that would cut themselves to think more clearly and be "icy." that's the special group that shay was the "boss" of and tally is a part of. but also those modifications were extremely out of the guidelines of the pretty committee and when tally went to Diego, a different city, she was almost forcibly taken back into surgery again so they could remove those parts of her bc as i said, they were not allowed. a lot of the shit dr. cable did wasn't exactly allowed but bc the cities don't interfere with each other, it was never noticed by other cities and so was never put a stop to.

Shay doesn't take tally with her to leave for the smoke, she tells her before she leaves from the dorms. Tally and shay actually rode the coaster before she goes to find the smoke so she ALREADY knows about the gap before the moment they show. Dr. Cable never says anything about the smoke having a weapon. There wasn't a holding place before the smoke, they get taken there by Rangers [who are the people who really have that helicopter] which who are actually who pick Tally up and sets the fire she almost dies in. Dr. Cable never came to the smoke and ordered AZ to be killed in public, they only find out he died after the raid. PERIS DOESNT DIE. And I do think the pretties didn’t really live up to my expectations. I mean I had pretty low expectations to begin with. Right. There's this whole part in the original book where they even talk about how they choose how to make your face when you turn 16, by duplicating each side of your face, and seeing which one is "prettier"- and then giving you THAT look as the total. It's not that they're ACTUALLY ugly. It's that in that society, the LACK of augmentation (plastic surgery) is CONSIDERED ugly BY THEIR STANDARDS (but then under the surface, there is also the issue that the SMoke points out, about the brain lesions and stuff).

I just looked it up and it sounds like he wrote it and then when people were pointing it out he said something about it- I’ve never heard of the books or the guy but his concept was so close I could call it out- I don’t think that’s particularly good ethics as a writer to not give credit to your source material (before the book comes out) or at least make it transformative enough that it’s not a copy he just fleshed out a little more. I saw he claims he forgot about watching it but it’s so close it’s hard to believe.

what if it were a musical though.... Also I want to say (haven't finished the vid yet) that a lot of worldbuilding stuff you mention is from the book, which I would love to hear your thoughts on too! I'm not saying that means it's GOOD it's just, not the movie's fault lol

I remember really liking the Uglies series, but considering there was already an attempt at making the movie back in the day that the author stopped because it wasn’t going well I’m not surprised Netflix would put out a shit adaptation

The new Hunger Games movies aren't coming out of nowhere, the author released A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes in 2020, and the movie released 3 years later. This next movie will be based on a book coming out in 2025. It's just a more planned adaptation after this first prequel did well with readers first, then viewers, and with how long trad publishing takes she probably wrote the 2025 release in 2021-2022.

I think it helps that it's a decade late... If it came out five years ago it would just be late now it's almost rolling around to... Fresh?

I also read all the books I personally don’t remember a queer relationship. I remember reading queer books back then but I don’t remember one being in this series that might’ve been a reach guys or I’m wrong…

It all feels decades old, because the story is clearly based on an episode in The Twilight Zone (season 2 episode 6, Eye of the Beholder/The Private World of Darkness, 1960).

man i wish they just made them gay :( like it’s been 20 years we rlly don’t need to stick to the lore of the book. and imagine having a gay dystopian movie like bro that would make this movie 50000000x better. i do honestly lowkey love this movie though but i like bad movies. maybe someone can write a good shayxsquint (i forget her actual name) fanfic????

Whelp, guess I am going to be rereading this series as a 25 year old. Gonna be doing a mental comparison on hunger games world building and the correlation of societal implications surrounding it. Will report back with my thoughts 🫡

they really could’ve made it work if they changed what the society in the movie’s beauty standards were. like that first episode of twilight zone. THAT would’ve been a good movie

Tally and Shay had romantic chemistry even in the books. But Scott Westerfield chose his self insert to be the love interest for reasons.
