That answers my question from a while back. Aww man that must get frustrating. With the bale thrower, you see the hay fly everywhere.
@DLHFarms6 жыл бұрын
Fortunately it doesn't happen often . I try to keep my knotters in tip top shape, but you can do anything about the square knot that ties the balls together if it tries to tie right on a knot.
@DanielleWhite6 жыл бұрын
Oh, man! We always lucked out and they missed the knotter so we just had the string break when the thrower on our JD 336 tossed it. Was visually impressive as the bale opened up from one side mid-air. The spray system looks similar to the one we had in the early 1990s. It wasn't NH branded but it was the same shape tank and mount. The stuff we sprayed smelled like dill pickles. I envy you the cab for that. Our tractors were old 100-series Allis-Chalmers with not even the ROPS. Get the wind from the wrong direction and I needed a dust mask and goggles as the spay-laden hay dust came right over me.
@DLHFarms6 жыл бұрын
That spray can be pretty strong if you get a good whiff of it.

For the stuff we had it was that it irritating for the eyes, nose, etc. Other than propionic acid I don't remember the ingredients. I imagine a lot of formulation changes have happened over the last 20-odd years.

Instead of tedding and raking again get yourself one of those fluffer conditioners made back in the early 50s for behind a sickle mower. Mine is a number 33 international. Set the bottom roller about 3 to 4 inches off the ground, go right over the window and it fluffs it up so nice. Dries down really fast with a breeze. Stay out of wet grass or standing grass the rollers will rap up. Up here in ND problem we have is drying down to fast after fluffing because of the 15 to 20 mph breezes we constantly have. I run about 5 mph over the windows, works awesome. Windows get rained on fluff them after the top moisture is off and your baling by afternoon. Also you can set the windrow width to match you baler. Old tech. Love mine. Keep haying!!!

I love spinner knobs, the handicap shops that do the conversions on the vehicles, they sell you one for about $150, I think I got my latest one from Tractor Supply for $10, love that it has a bearing, the ones at the auto parts store have no bearing, and constant use, they pop apart at the worst time. I once worked for a guy gathering bales and stacking them in the loft of the barn, was in 93, I made a nickel a bale, all by hand, no elevator, had to pitch them to the guy in the loft, damn hard work for the money.
@haweater15555 жыл бұрын
My first Deere had a good knob, but was starting to get a bit creaky after 8 years of spinning. My next Deere, the dealer installed a cheaper knob, and after only a couple of years it already started to "lose its balls". Remember years ago, the spinner knob was made of wood, with a carriage bolt all the way through. As the wood wore out, there would be too much of a gap between the knob and bolt, and it could pinch your hand. OUCH !!

We have a camera mounted right above the bales when they come out of the accumulator so you can see the knots and strings you still can miss one from time to time but its alot nicer if you only break one instead of 10

We had ex railway company Scammel artic trailers and two dollies, the trailers had drop down front wheels instead of legs, so could be dropped easily. If the moister was too high or rain was on the way we would drop the trailers in the cow barn, just to get em off the field. Then stack them in the hay barn later. We didn't have crop saver in those days, we did have a Waffler that picked up the have like a baled, fluffed it up or waffled it and dumped out the rear into a windrow. Exactly how it reduced moister I don't know, but will try and Google it later.

You hay would dry faster and absorbe less humidity if you would cut the hay at two or three inches of the ground. By doing this the stubbles will hold the hay above the ground where the humidity won't soak the hay. Plus it gives the air a chance to go through the windrow and dry it out faster.

Sometimes a 1st calf cow will ignore the baby I reckon but otherwise one mamma at night is more than enough deterrent unless there's a big pack around, but you'd hear them at night and notice a problem in the area right away.

Usually when the sledge was messing about, no idea what make it was but the paddle to direct it either side was close to the top and you'd just think you were getting on when a bale would catch it and then explode all over the place. The biggest problem we had was where our baler took sisal and just wouldn't work with plastic we used to get Red Star and Bluebell sisal which was made in the UK then it was sold and production moved abroad and they became junk and then it was was hard finding a decent quality twine that didn't vary in thickness throughout the rolls going from too thick like a sharpie to too thin like parcel string that bunged things up or just snapped.

@DLHFarms5 жыл бұрын
No never had a problem with mine doing that. Are you feeding enough hay in it they like big windrows.

Here in southeast Ohio, we've had a coyote issue for years. Any decent mule or donkey seems to be a good deterrent. But in the last couple years, we've been having more and more sightings of bobcats (the feline kind, not the skid steer kind lol) and I'm afraid its only a matter of time before livestock starts getting killed by those, too.
@DLHFarms4 жыл бұрын
Yeah wonder if the mules will help with those too

Suicide knobs are ok for farm vehicles and also for disabled drivers. I have one on my van and it’s awesome. They were made illegal because of kids using them to do doughnuts.

Bless your heart man, I'm happy to see that you got it on the steering wheel. I'm sure it will come in very handy for you. As for the coyotes, we even have them up here in NW Ohio, and they can be a pain in the back side for not only the farmers, but for anyone that has cats or small dogs outside. I knew we would be in for trouble when they re-introduced them back into this area. They had done this after they re-introduced the wild turkey back into our county, to help keep the turkey population under control. That's what we get when they don't think things through, and they forget about all of the other small outdoor critters people may own.

Why do humans think they need to play God. I wish they would let things be natural. Thanks again for the knob!

Get yourself a thermal rifle scope it's the best way to hunt coyotes. They are not cheap but it gives you the advantage.

@georgegoertzen47235 жыл бұрын
Next time that happens, keep clear of the carcass and set yourself up to hunt over it that night. You just might get the cuprit. Be careful not to lay down a lot of your scent around it and make sure you are down wind. That was a lot of meat for one coyote to consume, even considering it's likely feeding pup's at this time of the year. It could ha d brought the pups to the kill and the pup's could be stupid enough to get the next night.
