I was given a '93 - 029 a few years ago, when the owner realised he'd bought the correct size rings but the wrong size piston for it, the old piston and rings were smoked but the cylinder was still good. I only a small amount of time into it getting the cylinder off and made him aware of a few problems I'd found. When I gave him an estimate on it needing all of what Richard mentioned, new impulse hose, new fuel line, new crank seals etc etc (which it did actually need) he decided to cut his losses and offered me the saw to square the 'so far' minimal labour charge. Ok, sure👌 I totally stripped it down and went right through it, replaced everything it needed including new (correct size) chinese piston, good quality crank bearings, seals, hoses, rebuilt yhe carby etc etc and it turned out to be an awesome saw. I used it only a few times, then reluctantly ended up having to sell it a year or two later for quite a few $$ when I had some bills to pay.

Wow I haven’t seen an 029 that wasn’t a super in a long time. That saw is from the early to mid 90s. I agree, not worth paying a shop to rebuild, but that would be a great DIY project for someone to being that saw back to life.

I was in the saw shop today and the mechanic said the new help quoted an 029 rebuild. Me being me I had to ask why ANYONE is rebuilding an 029. I understand a home build but jeez, shop rate for a full rebuild on a clamshell gets expensive for what it is. His response was he was going to have to have a talk with his helper lol

Filters have the highest efficiency to catch particles shortly before they plug up. They also limit flow allowing for a nice rich mix. The potential dirt on the cylinder fins blocking heat transfer is negated by this cooling rich mix. This guy knew what he was doing 😉

Got an 026 that looked worse than that… Customer said locked up and wouldn’t pull over….. oh and sharpen the chain….. Opened up and it was totally full of debris, air box full, filter plugged, flywheel area full, find plugged. Spent a half hour digging crap out Ana blowing out….no cylinder damage, spins over free with all the debris out. Fuel was weak, dirty and a few years old. US cleaned carb & kit, dumped fuel, cleaned tank new filter. Fired up and ran good, front AV Mount ripped out and clutch run on at idle. Replaced AV Mount, looked at clutch cleaned and lubed bit clutch had been overheated. Called customer and he said he hasn’t had to do anything to it since he bought it in”87”…. Sure looked like it.He was pretty proud of the fact…..😢😢

These are HD19-22 IIRC not HDAs. I've never heard of this hold the throttle open while doing a compression test. It must be a thing. You're the third comment. I'm going to do a video on it to prove or disprove whatever the internet chatter has started. Thanks for the video idea!

I've been chainsaw milling with an 029 Super (Yes , "O" 29 , not that MS junk) with a 20 / 32 and 42" bar. Milling creosote telephone poles up to 30' on top of that . And will continue to do so as long as China keeps sending us those cheap knock-off parts. Have never had a piston, cylinder ,crank seal or bearing problem.

The older “metal tag” Stihl equipment was the best as evidenced by this saw enduring 20+ years of abuse. A 291 wouldn’t last 5 years under these conditions.

Yeah, I’m fairly certain that when Stihl went from the OXX to the XX? is when they went to those “cringe” flippy caps that many folks DESPISE. They have worked fine for me, but I don’t run a Stihl. When I was helping out with a man that actually owns his on arborists business, he DID run them, but his equipment was ALWAYS torn up because he didn’t care for it properly (including his trailer for towing his equipment and hauling away the trees). I refueled his saws a few times and I could tell that someone besides me had not used the proper amount of care necessary for reinstalling those stupid caps and caused the existing caps and body (oil tank and fuel tank) damage and then the caps didn’t want to “seat” properly. He seemed to be amazed when I went out with him and whipped out my 372XP and performed a few things for him and I was able to do things with it that his 661 MAGNUM was having issues with. It’s was kinda funny to me because he had 23cc’s more saw than me and I run a 30”bar while he’s running a 32” yet I’m able to do exactly what he’s doing. 😂
