The reason you see all of these “weird problems” is because 80% of the owners are younger than 20 years old and have absolutely no idea what they are doing and then blow the shit up. Same story with the SRT4’s, older generation wrx’s etc. they get an accessport, turn the boost up to the max without any other supporting mods because they don’t have any spare money for good parts and then stress their cars engine to the max until KABOOM. So a lot of your arguments are purely situational. I’ve owned many turbo cars and I’m in my early 20’s and have never had a catastrophic failure with any of them. ST, turbo si, SRT4 and now my speed3. If you have half a brain and watch the videos posted by Will Dawson about maintenance and what to do/not to do, you’ll be fine.
@atotheu71123 жыл бұрын
What would you say to look for when purchasing one of these cars, like common issues and signs of wear on the turbo or other parts. Also what is a fair price for one of these cars. I was looking for a civic si but I can’t find any that don’t have terrible paint so I’m trying to open my possibilities but I have no clue about these cars.
@tylerFC13 жыл бұрын
@@atotheu7112 If you want a “reliable” turbo car I would honestly stick to an ST or a turbo SI. They are going to last longer than a speed on average. Downsides of the engine: intake manifold has horrible flow and therefore leads to low compression in cylinders especially cylinder 3. VVT is another common issue accompanied by the “chain slap” sound. And lastly the turbos tend to fail commonly. I have 60k miles on catless downpipe and it’s running fine, for now. I’m getting out of cars for now so my speed will be my last “fun” car for a while until I can afford a low mileage evo or golf R, if you are dead set on a speed3 get a compression test done, and upgrade your intake manifold with HPFP internals(this is a must for these cars).

I've a 2011 Gen2 - totally standard in Europe - Had it a long time now and is totally reliable - doesn't scrape cos it's not lowered - got an indicated 157mph on the autobahn - I didn't buy it for the track - It will spin the wheels from a standing start but no more than any other FWD hot hatch - Holds its own against any similar vehicle even the latest stuff. I service it super regular cos I love it and it has never ever let me down. F--king brilliant car and I can't see myself selling anytime soon as something similar like the latest Type r is such a lot of money in comparison, plus a Type r is gonna lose a ton of cash over the next 5 years in depreciation, where as my Mazda is going to lose bugger all in comparison as the depreciation on a 10 year old car stops especially if it's immaculate- Zoom Zoom - I wish Mazda would make a new Speed before we all go electric though. Great video again, I like those that honestly provoke thought about the car that you own.

I'm riding a Mazdaspeed 3 in Japan and this car is the coolest. It's unpopular in Japan, so I envy it because there are few tuning parts.
@Kommentiert_2 жыл бұрын
I guess it´s everywhere else unpopular. No tuning parts in europe. You have to order everything from america and for that you have to pay 250% of the porduct price. Shipping, taxes etc. And at the end you can´t even install the parts legally in Germany because everything on the Extiror and Engine has to be certified by an assessor. Without information on the material and risk assessment, there is no approval. All modifications to the engine can result in more pollutant emissions or noise. You would have to buy each product at least twice and have one of them destroyed to get a chance of being approved. In addition to this a lot of propaganda was made by Volkswagen for the GTI at the time, so that almost every other vehicle was badmouthed by car magazines, so that hardly anyone grabbed it.

If u buy a MS3 for tracking or dragging, u dis not do your homework. Any car that gets mods can get finicky. Mod it right by following proven mod paths and it will be reliable. I've had mine from new since 2012... 130K miles on it now. I've had some issues but overall its been pretty reliable. Had to rebuild engine with upgraded internals when an OEM piston cracked at 75K. The rebuild was good for about 35K miles when a manley rod broken and went though block. Got used block on ebay and reused same internals and its back up. I'd say I've spent $7K overall on parts over the years. It pushes @380 tq/hp at wheels so it's fun but will peel out. MIichelin PilotSports help A LOT to minimize that. Super happy with car over past 11+ yrs. If you can wrench, this is an easy platform to mod. Good luck finding an unmodde one (or one that looks stock but was actually modded and stocked out prior to being put on sale).

I enjoyed your detailed review of issues with your Gen 2. I had a Gen 1 purchased new in '08 and owned it for 7.5 years and 130K. It was stock except for the dealer installed Mazdaspeed intake (I didn't even know what an Accessport was). I should have sold it at 100K miles because that's when it started nickel and diming me to death including turbo replacement. In late 2015, I bought a new '16 Golf R manual. Back then it was only $36K. The dealer happened to have an on-premises tuner shop so I took full advantage of that availability, building it up to aa APR Stage 2 with 387 HP and 409 FT LBS to the crank. The massive increase in power necessitated upgrading the clutch to a Stage 3 racing clutch. I have had this car going on 8 years (but only 63K miles) and loving every minute driving it. Because I'm now retired and driving much less, I figure the car will outlive me as long as it doesn't get totaled. Anyway, thanks for bringing me back to the good old days of my arrest-me red Speed 3. An interesting note: when I went to sell the Speed 3, I advertised it in AutoTrader and sold it in a single day.

Decided to do a little preventive maintenance. Changed the plugs to find out they were rusty and original, had oil pooling down intake hose, so i think turbo almost gone.changed oil and filter,found motor oil dripping everywhere from gasket make. I have a stock 2010 gen2 speed 3 and I really agree with you. Mechanicaly mine is in top shape but I didn’t notice before 2 or 3 month after buying it that the paint was trashed I need to repaint my roof, my hood and my backdoor so basically the entire car and it is in white pearl and this paint is so damn expensive and hard to do I need to go to a bodyshop even if im really decent in car painting because this paint is very easy to fail and the car will just look ugly has hell this is a 5000$ CAD dollar if not more and I don’t have that kind of money and the damage look too much to just wrap over it

I’m 19 and I’ve had my ms3 for for like 6 months now or a little longer and just absolutely love the car and you pointed a lot out that I’ve already noticed but cars have their quirks but to me it doesn’t really take a lot away from it I wouldn’t say it’s my dream car but it’s definitely one of them that I always wanted to own

Maintenance is key. I love my Gen1 07 Gt did VVT at 100k upgraded Mounts tmic internals and my daily with a baby tune 157k original turbo no smoke. Maintenance is key and don't think it is a race car. I dont do alot if any real standing pulls mostly rolls and dont boost under 3.5k rpm and you should be just fine.

I know why you can't get traction and it's not just because its fwd , I have watched your other videos and suspension needs setting up properly. It will be a comprise like all thing's but you will notice the difference in traction.

I use mine for deliveries, 2013 skyactive manual , it’s never going to be fast. It’s zippy and that’s it. Going to put red race line coils for less body roll and slightly lower stance. I push it hard in corners. Maybe change the rear stabilizer bar. Do the coils first the. I will see. Oddly enough my 02 Marquis pulls harder then this car. My 05 3.0r Subaru kills both of them. However is a diva 👩🎤 and likes to break a lot. For hard pulls I rely on 07 stage2 Harley Sporty (bought used $3,300) hits 120mph no problem. If you want to go fast and be sketch find a used 90’s Cobra for under 7k. Which is what I will probably do unless I find c5 corvette for the same cost. 🤷🏽♂️

If don't want a money pit, you don't want it to be reliable then mod the shit out of it! Comes with the territory this happens to every car. Keep it stock and quit bitchin.
