All of their albums are very good to great but of course hearing them for the first time is always hard to compete against. Its true that Dream Theater has both the best and worst fan base, its truly unfortunate that people can't just enjoy the songs for how they are but at the same time, I understand some of the criticisms fans make. I agree that Night Terror was a “comfort” track. This new song goes a step further, more varied, but still “comfortable” and this is probably why it’s been released as a single. If I know DT well enough, the best is yet to come with the full album. I am 100% hopeful there will be an epic song in the album like a new “in the name of god” perhaps 🤟🏻

Great review and breakdown. While I preferred the first release off this album more, I am one of those oddballs that like when prog bands go into an unexpected movement in a song occasionally whether it's swing, jazz, western, etc. and then dip back into ripping it! I just love the musicality and skills required to pull off genre jumps mid song on top of the technical chops it takes to play in the weird and constant changing time signatures at their pro level. I couldn't put my finger on the Deep Purple feel until you mentioned it, now I can't unhear it. Thanks for doing this one. Subbed.

The drummer in a band either leads the band forward or pulls the band backward. I've been listening to DT since 2004 and of course Mike is my family. However, NOW his return is a giant step backwards. And yes, these are my expectations and my subjectivity. After Mangini came in, the band reached a whole new performance level - outrageous drum patterns, and I didn't feel that the “soul” was lost. What many people feared after Portnoy's leaving. They created amazing albums, the band sounds more monolithic than ever, live - just phenomenal. All thanks to the band sitting on a super solid core foundation - Mike Mangini. The thing is, Mike Portnoy knows everything about himself: he knows he hasn't come up with a single new rhythm or a single new fills since Octavarium. He knows this. And I'm sorry he doesn't try. I mean, he's definitely listening to Animals As leaders, Plini. Tesseract, Periphery, Karnivool - he knows how to build a drum pattern to breathe new life into it. I remember at some point he became more critical of himself and even said that endlessly winning “Best Drummer” awards doesn't say that he really is. Now we also hear Mike playing old patterns without adding anything new. Because of this, the rest of the musicians can't add anything new either. Maybe someone will say, okay, technically the band will stay where they are or take a step back, but the songs will be even cooler. Maybe. But I don't hear that yet. On the other hand, there's a lot more songs to come. But these two are nothing new.

I find that a lot of DT albums/tracks need to sit with me for a while before I really appreciate where I place them on the 'tier list'. I feel that 'Night Terror' is one of the worst tracks they've put out .. and I don't think time will change my opinion of that very much. I'm much higher on 'A Broken Man', but I also feel a bit underwhelmed. There's some nice call backs (The Great Debate), and solid riffing, but it doesn't inspire me the way some of my fav DT tracks have done. I was very 'mid' about 'The Astonishing' when it came out, but today I look at it as the best Mangini era album. It didn't completely work, but it felt at least that they attempting to reach high, and at times, they absolutely hit the mark. I'll take the full on creativity of 'Misunderstood' or the timelessness of 'Solitary Shell' any day over something safe and familliar.

The jazzier sections make a lot more sense when looking at the accompanying visuals in the video. On their own they sound a bit "fun" for a song revolving around PTSD, but when it shows some of the visuals of soldiers doing enjoyable things along the way, it definitely fits better. It also gives the listener a break from the intensity of the rest of the song, and this seems like a parallel to the contrast between soldier's moments of reprieve and the intense, overwhelming experiences they go through the rest of the time.

If it was the purpose to bring back the old Dream Theater, it was successful. For me however, in my perception, it was a paradoxical change. While the old DT is back, the different Dynamic that Mangini brought to the band that pushed the band to its limit in my opinion, is gone, and I can only say that I am quite disappointed. This is not to say that this music that was put out by the band is not listenable or even very good, because it is. But as I stated earlier, the very intense powerful Dynamic that Mangini brought to the band just isn't, and I go back to that Mangini era to be satisfied.
@manuelsalazar39384 күн бұрын
There was no dynamic with Mangini, he just played and did nothing more for the band. He was just focused on a soulless technical prowess, he totally lacks the soul he used to play with when he was playing for Steve Vai. Just a follower, never a leader like Portnoy.

Really the only thing that's bothered me thus far is the terrible AI-generated artwork in the "A Broken Man" visualizer and in Hugh Syme's artwork for Parasomnia. Dream Theater, Opeth, and Judas Priest have all used AI-generated artwork in their visualizers and/or album art and it's all really awful-looking, uncanny valley stuff and unprofessional.

Like it didn't really feel like much was happening in it, Which feels funny to say when some of my favourite of their songs are things like "Count of Tuscany" or "Octavarium", Which have long, somewhat repetitive, Instrumental sections which I feel like fairly objectively have less happening in them than "A Broken Man", but at the same time, It just _feels like_ more to me? Idk, I can't really explain it other than this. That said, I've also only listened to "A Broken Man" once, so it's possible with repeat listens I'll come to appreciate it more.

Been a fan for God's knows how long ... And it's true: Their fanbase is the definition of toxic fandom. No other band I know gets talked down by their own fans than Dream Theater. Whatever they put out, it's gonna get absolutely trashed or praised to Heaven and back. If they craft songs that are reminiscent of their earlier material, it's "they are boring now, they don't innovate. They always sound the same." If they do something different (let's take The Astonishing as an example) they are called out for "having lost their spark. That's not true DT." There's just no winning for them. I watched the live chat when A Broken Man released and wow... that was really wild. Some of them were shitting on it really hard. Especially the video (which yeah... their videos have always been pretty bad, but I came for the music not the visuals). I like the tracks from Parasomnia so far, really do. It's DT at its absolute core. Which I think is totally fine for a band who celebrates their 40th anniversary. Is it groundbreaking? No. But it's the tone and style I fell in love with many years ago. And that's good enough, considering they are moving towards the end of their career now.

good song but how tf did that visualizer get past anyone

My issue with the new songs is that they had to make significant compromises on the vocal lines. This aspect makes me much less interested in Parasomnia than I otherwise might have been. I don't see a bright future for them with James on board...

I'm a HUGE Dream Theater fan. I love all their work, even The Astonishing to me is like a big underrated masterpiece. 🤘

@Metal Pilgrim - What did you think of the music video?
@MetalPilgrim7 күн бұрын
Honestly? I didn't like it... not a fan of AI generated images rotation. And in addition being here in Ukraine I feel like it didn't fully open up the complexity of the emotions people go through. And what about you?
@moonchildah7 күн бұрын
@ I felt exactly the same. It was so obviously AI. And it didn’t trigger any emotions, which feels like a very strange choice for a song that is trying to convey the feeling of PTSD etc.

This track by track analysis that the fans are getting so worked up about is completely the wrong way to “evaluate” whether or not you’re going to like Parasomnia. Here’s an example. What if this were Octavarium and the first two singles were These Walls and The Root of All Evil? Think about what you were not hearing until the day of the album release…RIGHT?? Panic Attack and Octavarium. Now, don’t you agree that what we are hearing with this new album is excellent when you set yourself up with the right expectations? Parasomnia, so far - We don’t have an instrumental and the epic Shadowman yet. When we do get access to these we’re all going to LOVE them.

DT pays too much attention to their fanbase. It's a useless track, overproduced, everything is predictable when you know their music. Labrie's vocals boring me, same melodies again (i can hear the pitch corrections). The AI clip fits the song perfectly. Dt has said everything, time to move, or die ! I know it's really difficult to move on after 30 years, ask some advices to Akerfeldt.
