Wolf is the first person on here that I’ve seen say “I need to add dead space for the vocals”….so many other musician/drummers feel the need to “overplay” to show off their music theory and drum skills, but he didn’t. I love it
@jenniferfoster1692

Yes! That's the songwriter in him, looking at the big picture and how all the pieces fit together, not just his instrument. It was fascinating to see the songwriter side come out while he was 'solving' this challenge of how to make his drum parts best serve the song. Such a pro.

Not only does he play musically, he really understands song structure and dynamics. Every drummer should at least learn another instrument. This comment should be higher. Certainly being surrounded by talented musicians is an advantage, but that just provides resources. He still had to put in the hard work to turn those resources into... this. Countless kids born into similar environments never achieve what he has, it's ridiculous to brush it off as just "luck."
@Me04120

He absolutely is genetically gifted. I got a drumkit too, but I can't arrange a song, or write parts or easily bang out a fill and then play it exactly the same on the spot next take. He clearly has a great musical memory to track what he's doing and arrange his playing to suit the song. I don't have that. Never had that ability. There's other things in life that I'm just naturally good at and don't have to work as hard as others at, but music is not one of them. It's certainly not crazy to think that the son of Eddie Van Halen would have a knack for musicianship.

I feel like he's been taken for granted as in being Eddie's son and Alex's nephew, he was just "born awesome". I don't believe that. While living the rock n roll life with his family did inject in him the attitude to be where he is now, we all may be forgetting how hard he has been practicing all those instruments he plays up to this day. It's not a "talent": it's pure, persistent and relentless hard work and a responsibility he feels to do his own thing instead of resting under his dad's name, which is commendable. What a performance he did here. very good tracking. he used his production skills to mix his own drums live. You can tell by how he approached each section, experimented with them all and knew where to pull back and where to show it off.
@PianoForte705
@PianoForte705 Ай бұрын
I've personally found that learning an instrument (or anything for that matter) is more about repetition. Once you get comfortable with the basics, then you can start injecting your own rhythms, accents, phrasing, etc. Talent to me is more having a natural leaning towards something, rather than just being naturally gifted at something.
@jenniferfoster1692
@jenniferfoster1692 Ай бұрын
This 100%. I hate how everybody talks about him getting the talent from his dad. You get this good (on multiple instruments) from practicing & playing your ass off. There's no DNA shortcut.
@kevincason5309
@kevincason5309 Ай бұрын
great comment. in an interview after the Taylor Hawkins tribute, he discussed having to grab the CDs for the songs Dave wanted him to do, sit down and learn them note for note. the image that conjures up is a musician who works to perfect his skill and takes it damn serious. Alex's recent book "Brothers" shows the lineage and the mindset, all the way through it. Wolf's grandfather Jan, is the influence we see in all of them.
@jenniferfoster1692
@jenniferfoster1692 Ай бұрын
@@kevincason5309 Yes, spot on. Alex's book is very enlightening, shows real pride in musicianship, hard work & professionalism, all learned from their father & the other musicians around him. Obviously Wolf's dad & uncle modeled those lessons well for Wolf, too. And it was very noticeable during this episode that Wolf is a songwriter, not just an instrumentalist. Not all musicians compose entire songs, and Wolf very clearly approached this as a songwriter & drummer, you could see his though processes as he was working things out. It was very impressive.
@dunston666
@dunston666 20 күн бұрын
He really understood the song - happy to sit out the right parts, added some nice accents, built things up really well and absolutely killed that final fill. Should come as no surprise that anyone with the Van Halen name is a great musician, but this was a treat.

My husband and I saw Wolf for the first time Wednesday when Mammoth WVH opened for Creed and 3 Doors Down. We already liked him, his amazing musical talents, and his music, but seeing him live, blew us away! I've heard people ellude that he's only where he is because of his parents and uncle and I call absolute bull on that! He is so talented, hard working, and wise beyond his years! He oozes a quite confidence that is far from arrogant or cocky. I think people forget (or may not know) that he plays every instrument, writes and sings every song, mixes, produces...ALL of his albums. That is not something that is done very often because most can't do it. Wolf can and I am so glad he shares it with the rest of us! He does all of it and it shows because his music is incredible! He definitely turned us from casual fans to, "Ohhhhh he's near. Who's with him? Awh. doesn't matter. We're going!"" If you. Get a chance to see him live ...GO!!! On a side note: I know he loves his family, but I hope the day will come where people talk only about Wolf and his talents first and only mention the family connections as a side note. I know he really misses his Dad but it has to be bittersweet that his family (mostly Eddie) is mentioned in every other sentence. I am only child too and I lost my parents at 22 and 25. I couldn't imagine going through that, trying to deal with your own grief, but being reminded everytime you turn around that your parent isn't there. Grief will never leave, but Wolf still has a long life ahead with his beautiful wife without needing to live through Eddie's ghost in his professional life when he already is going through in his personal life.

@DomMia0320
@DomMia0320 Ай бұрын
@SpikeCutolo It sure does. I saw Creed twice before in 2001 and 2002 in my college days. They were the headliners then too. This was my husband's first for Creed but he did surprise me with tickets to Scott's solo tour this pass summer (brownie points for Hubby because the show was on my birthday). Sadly, neither of us ever got to see Van Halen. Concerts are one of our three favorite things to do. Comedy shows and cruises are the other two. We have a few musical acts and comedians that are on our list of "they are close ..we're going!" Unfortunately, we've been dealing with some major health stuff with me the last few years, so we've had to be strategic about the ones we go to....but we still try our best to go. Kind of makes us feel half way normal again. 😁

@DomMia0320 Something else you mentioned that I agree with 100% .. The constant mentioning of EVH.. I trust just by your wording we feel the same! I just watched an entire concert of WVH from a year or so back and if he gets back only half of the love, kindness, humor and appreciation that seems to radiate from him towards his audience, he should lead a well deserved happy life! (I don't care how corny I sound..lol) Anyways.. May you and yours be well! 🕊

@@SpikeCutolo I agree. It wasn't corny at all. I couldn't imagine living in the shadow of his talented family. I was glad when Mark Tremonti asked Wolf to join his band, Tremonti. I think some in the industry thought he was going to be a nepo kid, but thankfully, Mark saw pass that. I think that move made more people take notice of the possibility of a long career potential. I had watched some of the older clips (which were very good), but the in person charisma was even better. I hope you and your loved ones have a wonderful holiday season!
