"Look at that kit." Fun fact: that kit is the Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence-era Siamese Monster, with the 40th Anniversary Tour reso kick heads on it for the video. I have it on good authority that there's a whole new kit coming for the tour, which I'm looking forward to seeing in the flesh at the O2 in about 10 days. 🙂

Why do people expect Labrie to sing like his 22 year old self or something? Not many people could sing those songs when he did and nobody still can!!! I've still to hear anyone of any age get near to replicating him. They've consciously thought about his older age and ability here, and that's good! Yes we'd all love him to be doing massive high F's and he could do it in a studio, but then people will moan about him live. This is a great song.

This x1000 I get it, his voice is not everyone's cup of tea, but the more I listened to them the more you learn and realize that what he did back then was amazing...and what he does today is STILL great considering his age and all he went through (most people would not sing again after his accident). No one can tell me they can find a singer like him, like him or not, he is UNIQUE and you can put any other singer in there and the band will not sound the same. It will feel just as weird when Portnoy was not in the band...heck, it applies to any them if I am being honest.
@Bobsikus

he sounds pretty much like old times I would say, but TBH his voice is not my personal choice.. but it fits the songs and I cannot say I "hate" it.. My brother is actually on side that if Labrie was not there it would be better, and as a good brother I always make fun of him of it 😅

Under every single fcking thing DT has ever uploaded, there's a guy going "Labrie sounds great here!". It's like a religious mantra. There's aggressive pitch correction his vocals, so it sounds okay. It doesn't sound "great". If you think it does, play this song to someone who isn't a DT fand and ask what they think of the singer. Get a grip.
@Neo-Midgar
@Neo-Midgar 2 ай бұрын
@@ancho-31337 There is a massive difference between pushing yourself in-stufio & getting a good sound versus sounding good in a multiple hour live setting. Absolutely has sounded like ass live for a while, but that doesn't mean that in a controlled studio environment he can't let it rip for a take or two. It often happens with aging Metal vocalists, they still can sound like they used to in short bursts, which works in the studio, they just can't sustain it for a show or a while on tour. James Hetfield is another example. Just because he sounds good doesn't necessarily mean it's fake, but it also doesn't mean he'll be able to pull it off like that live.
@ancho-31337

It’s Mikes cymbal accents that do it for me. Their sound is already so percussive and thick…what he does with the cymbals really fills out the sound and makes it so much more intricate. It’s perfection.

Darn, I'm so happy to listen to DT again. I've missed this. MP was such a big reason that made DT a band I love so much. Him and JP. I didn't really enjoy any of the Mangini albums. He's a fantastic drummer and I really tried. But something (or rather someone) was missing. Now that he's back, just one song rekindled my love of the band. That was that easy! That reaction was really cool Samus, I'm really glad you're also jamming on this line-up. Portnoy is the one that got me into drumming when I was already a guitarist, and this song just makes me wanna play both. Again, I've missed that so much that it's the second time I'm watching your reaction and the 4th I've listened to this song overall. Dream Theater, Opeth, Wintersun and The Black Dahlia Murder. This back half of the year is a gift. Cheers from France! 🍻 PS: Sorry for the rambling, the alcohol is getting to my brain and I wanna express myself. It gets me so happy because of the long history I have with this band, quite a longer time than the other aforementioned bands. *Edit* I just wanna add that it's not just the drumming, Portnoy brings a lot with it and also the writing and the backing vocals. So glad to hear both his kit and his vocal chords in new music.

New Dream Theater and Mangini coming out with Rhythm Knowledge Vol. 4 (have you gone through the other books?) it’s a great time for the drummers of Dream Theater Sonically where they left off on Black Clouds but you can see the evolution of the band from the Mangini era. Portnoy also seems more solid and punchier

@@FETRND I’ve noticed with Portnoy stuff a lot of people approach it from a fan perspective. Whereas Mangini was unknown to a lot of people and they couldn’t wrap their heads around what he was doing(and why). Factor in the nostalgia factor and Mangini always got the evil step parent treatment. But now hopefully we can move past that and more people will look into Mangini’s Rhythm Knowledge system while also enjoying Portnoy’s new DT material.

Portnoy offers nothing new. Same ol same ol, and people dig nostalgia. Drummers got ripped off with Portnoy returning. Go listen to the first cut from the last album and compare. The Alien vs Night Terror.

@@danlc95 I’ve been a fan of both since ‘02 and have studied Mangini’s methods and taken a lot of inspiration from Portnoy in both DT and LTE. Mangini said he lives life in “3 second increments” and seems to be at home doing his Masterclasses. While Portnoy seems to have gotten what he needed playing with other bands The other 4 members sound awesome on both songs and you can tell who’s behind the kit, which I personally enjoy both. Now we have twice as much stuff to practice and be inspired by.

Everyone complaining about MP’s drum fills being the same. It could be an artistic choice by the band to suggest the return of him (like old times). Also, he’s literally one of the top metal drummers of all time and amount of different styles and fills he has written is way beyond most of the drummers (of all time). Pay respects people and stop whining about everything!

This is triumphant in every possible way. I feel like I’m 16 again haha!! The quality is just astonishing. I don’t even care that there’s some continuity differences between Mikes cymbal hits on the recording and the cymbal choices on the video. Mans gotta have some fun improvising! If that means the parts morph and change, then even better for him and for us because it means he’s feeling it, exploring it & we’re getting to see him more alive and spreading that magic that we all love so dearly. What a bloody great experience this was, thank you Samus for sharing your excitement with us too! Possibly my fave reaction video yet… what’s the backstory on the fish poisoning?! Haha

Yep. They progressed with Mangini, now it's a regress back to the Portnoy days. Hell, I became a fan with Portnoy, however the sound was stale and Mangini brought a fresh take and sound. It was much needed. This, to me, is just ok, it's the old DT which is nice, I feel they abandoned the direction they were going though. Not sure why.
