These are hella nice! Had mine for over a year now, and couldn't be happier! I've got over 40 nights with mine, half of those sleeping around 15F-30F (my quilt is a 20 degree, with non taper, and open footbox same as yours) and havent had any issues with down migrating in the footbox, and zero cold spots! Great review Dan!

I recently purchased and received this quilt right before an April hike on the AT. I purchases this quilt because the price was about $50 less than the Enlightened Equipment guilt. It worked great. Your review as it validated my purchase.

It was a toss up for me to either get this quilt or the Enlightened Equipment Revelation. I ended up buying the Revelation and was very happy with my purchase. If I were to purchase a second quilt I would get the UGQ Bandit just becasue of how custamizable it really is. I really like the way you customized yours! Thanks for the video! Keep them coming!

I'm ready to order a UGQ Bandit now. I've never used a quilt. Never even seen a backpacking quilt. I'm 5'10 190lbs. I'm looking at the 20 degree bag with 2oz over stuff and 1oz over in the foot box. I roll and toss from back to belly to side all night so I'm thinking the ExWide and I like the idea of pulling it over my head when colder so I'm looking at the ExLong. The length and width will also allow me to add a fleece liner for those colder camp outs. Zipper/pull cord foot box so I can use it as a blanket when car camping in the fall and early winter hunt trips. Most of my backpacking trips will be spring fall and usually 2 to 3 days out. Input? Concerns? Bad/Good Idea

I’m under 5 feet tall and was able to finally find a quilt that was custom enough for me. All other bags and quilts were way to large. Tried a youth bag but the 20degree rating not so much. I sleep cold and needed a warm something that was short enough that I could warm it with my body heat. UGQ was my answer. It’s warm and so versatile. The order a was filled very fast had mine in my home in about 4 weeks from the time I placed the orders. Price was great. Wide color choices. Enjoy your UGQ

With regards to the hole in the footbox, Katabatic did solve this with some additional baffling (very similar to the neck collar) and the position of a snap so that when you tighten that up the baffle puffs up all around and there is zero daylight in the footbox end. Works great!

Dan I was hoping you would show how you sleep with a wide pad with this. I am looking at UGQ and wanting to run a 25" pad after watching your other videos. And I can't find any video content of their Outlaw Hybrid showing the pad system and how that works. I liked how you did the video of the ZenBivy review by getting in it - much more informative. I have a Hammock Gear Burrow 20 quilt that I bought in 2016 but took it freezing conditions this September on a 20" pad and could not get warm and it felt like I had a draft alot. Thanks for the great content. I really enjoy your videos.

I have the same UGQ quilt - except no draft collar and 72" long. Just used it this past weekend for the first time in high 30's - low 40's temps. Very cozy. I bought an extra cord to go around my pad, so I have 2 points on either side to adjust ,in or out, the sides of the quilt to avoid drafts on the sides. I found it easy to turn over in, move around inside. I never got twisted up like I would in my mummy bag which would wake me up. I'm a side sleeper and the 55" width works great with 2 side toggles - no drafts. The first night I didn't have the collar synched tight enough and had drafts coming in the neck. The second night, I synched the neck down and no drafts. No cold feet even with the little hole at the bottom. I'm happy with this quilt and would buy it again. I would recommend buying the extra cord for your pad. I think it cost $3.00 extra.

How many quilts do you own? Wow. I’m trying to get back into backpacking after a twenty year hiatus. I never did big trips and I spent very little time at high altitude. I’m trying to put together a simple but comprehensive kit for all situations I want to hike into. I love all the ultra light gear that’s come out since my time but I have to make compromises. Sometimes I have to use something heavier because it’s what I can afford. Other times I spend money because weight saving is crucial. I really appreciate you and others who test a lot of gear because it helps me make up my mind on my little Kit. Way back in the ‘40s, Jack Kerouac wrote about the poet, Gary Snyder’s setup. He had a canvas rucksack, a down bag, a waterproof match safe, a little pot, a spoon, extra socks and two wool sweaters. Snyder hiked many miles and summited snow capped peaks all over the west with that gear, wearing heavy, Italian mountaineering boots. I try to keep that in mind.

I really enjoyed this video and will be looking into this company more. As for the hole in the foot box, they could easyly fix that by intergrating a draft collar on the that end as they did the neck end. Tuck it in well and the hole should be closed up. And i LOVE the colors you choose, when i order mine itll be the same and itll match my new pack.

Dan, I've got 8 of their quilts and need at least 1 more. If I could, I'd post a pic here of a custom quilt they did for me that is Texas themed. It's their old style Flight Jacket, which was discontinued in favor of the Bandit line. It's beautiful and I couldn't be happier. I also have about 3 of their tarps and will get at least one more. Love me UGQ. Paul and MIssy are salt of the earth folks and all their employees save like 2 are family members. And no, I do not work for them in any capacity. They're just folks who are friends in another state. :-) Also, TBH, that drawstring placement is new with the Bandit. The old Flight Jacket has the draw in the front. Good review!

There are ways of sealing the foot without a hole, but they all add weight. The neatest alternative is to make a small down plug, and tie it to the bottom of the quilt so it's ready for use.

Hey Dan. Katabatic gear has found a cool way to mitigate the hole at the bottom of the footbox. They do a down draft blocker on their flex model (same concept at the draft tube at the neck of your UGQ quilt). I have read that this takes care of most of the issues involved with the open footbox. Just some food for thought.

Dan, Love your channel and love that you encourage people to get out there and do backpacking to fit our needs! Loved the review on this quilt and it pushed me to explore into getting a quilt. I ordered one of these and should have it delivered in a few weeks. With that being said, I am new to quilts and was wondering, in your experience with tent sleeping, what pad do you use and what R value do you use? I have a Klymit insulated air pad that has an r value of 4.4 and was wondering what insulation values you use and for what temperatures. I figure I will be sleeping anywhere between the high 20's low 30's in the sierras in california, as well as up into the 50-70's in the southern mountains here in california. I ordered a 20 degree of these with 2 oz of overstuff. Do you use a foam pad underneath as well? and what r value is that? I'm not comfortable enough yet to try hammock camping, but I feel this is a good segue there and want to make sure i maximize my quilt set up on the ground but not over kill it so im a sweat machine inside either. Any and all info would be totally helpful. Thanks bunches brother!
@DanBecker
@DanBecker 5 жыл бұрын
I use a Nemo Tensor Insulated regular/wide pad. They don't list the R value on the site but it was definitely warm down to about 30F (that's the coldest I've had it at). I would say an R value of 4.4 is definitely good enough for the 20's but not much past that. I do not use foam underneath the pad. The pad has always been good enough. Awesome questions and let me know how it turns out!!

Thanks for the review. I'm looking for a summer-time quilt and this helps. Weight? I'll guess I will look that up. Curious about how you and other configure their sleeping pad with their quilt? Quilt completely on top? Pad inside foot box? Pad completely inside quilt top to bottom? Hybrid with pad inside quilt at bottom, but outside quilt at top? What do people do? Thanks!
@DanBecker
@DanBecker 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Jim! I think everyone’s a bit different. But how I do it is just sleep directly on the pad. The pad does not go inside of the foot box for me. I find that if I would do that then drafts make it into the foot box. Also, it’s best to use pad straps to hold the quilt to the sides of the pad when it’s cold. Hope that helps!
@jimpflugrath6220
@jimpflugrath6220 5 жыл бұрын
Helps somewhat, thanks. I put my tapered pad inside my quilt footbox, so there are no drafts if I stuff a sock in it. I use the straps to hold the quilt edges under my pad. That means my pad is completely inside my quilt. I thus sleep directly on the pad without my body touching the quilt except where the quilt it draped over the top of my body. This also means that I never roll off the pad accidentally as the quilt keeps/locks my body on the pad. If you have ever rolled off your pad onto snow, then you know how annoyingly cold that can be. With a sleeping bag, I also put my pad inside it because only then did I never roll off my pad. If I am on my back and I bend my knees to bring my feet towards my waist, then my pad can bend, too. If I am on my side and bend my knees, then no problem either as pad stays straight and I stay under the quilt edges. Maybe I'm weird, so I was just trying to find out what other people do. I go solo for the past several years, so don't get a chance to ask people on the trail.

I remember reading somewhere online that these quilts don't have "drydown" type of protection to stop the down from absorbing moisture like Enlightened Equipment, etc. But then again I read that drydown washes off after a few washes, rendering the protection worthless.
@DanBecker
@DanBecker 5 жыл бұрын
shadowgovernment3000 I found this on the UGQ website.. UltimaDOWN is not a hydrophobic treated down. Although we have offered hydrophobic treated down in the past, we have weighed the benefits vs. drawbacks carefully, and have recently stopped offering WR down. The benefits, which are marginal at best in real world scenarios, are offset by lower loft, intra laundering clumping, and the need for more down to offset the lower lofting and possible clumping. Effective April 11, 2016, we will no longer use hydrophobic down in our products.

I sleep cold so I like to have a little bit more protection even in the summer I'm wondering whether to buy a 800 fill and just add a 10 or a 20 oz over stuff or just go full monty on the 850 fill. What do you think. Is overstuff a cheaper way to get more fill? ✌️🤟

Great question! If you have the ridgerunner, the only quilt that will fit it properly is the one that is actually sold by warbonnet! Make sure you talk to them first before you purchase one. Also, it sounds like you’re a cold sleeper so I would go with the more comfortable and warmer under quilt. You’ll be glad you did!

@@DanBecker great thx, so... can 800 with over fill be as warm as 850 or am I just not understanding what over fill does. 😁

Hi dan I currently looking for the perfect sleep system. I have a little dog that likes to sleep in the backs of my legs while I side sleep to keep warm and with this I’m thinking a quilt would be the best option With this in mind I want a long wide sleeping pad and a mat cover to protect it and I want a nice pillow. Possibly the exped down mat What you your recommend? Also any chance you could do a video of your sleep system all set up?

Hey, nice review! I will definitly get one, too. but i am not sure about the dimensions. How tall are you and whats your shoulder width?
@DanBecker
@DanBecker 5 жыл бұрын
I’m not super broad shouldered. I’m not sure what my worth is. But I am 6‘2“ tall. I would definitely recommend at least 78 inches in length if you are as tall as me. Also, if you are tent camping, get the widest quilt you can.

Dan, Would you compare the EE quilt to the U GQ. I am trying to decide between the two.

Both are great companies but UGQ is a better bang for the buck in my opinion.

Hey I have been looking at these and it’s so hard to make a decision with out being able to go and actually see and touch them my self thanks for this review. I have been on the fence between this and the hammock Gear Burrow since my last trip recently, I’m in Canada and I sleep in a hammock I was pretty chilly so now I have seen these options look like they make a lot of sense. So my question is over all would you personally pick UGQ over the Hammock Gear Burrow ? I have never even owned a down blanket before but these look like the type of thing that would truly enhance my hammock experience, they are not cheap looks like the HG one is a bit more affordable but UGQ looks like it has more options so... what would you recommend a UGQ over the HG?

Awesome review! I just order a UGQ quilt last week but I still had some questions about the zippered foot box. Supposedly, that's a new feature for them. I couldn't find any reviews of a UGQ with a zipper. I have an Enlightened Equipment Revelation already but I hate it! Like you said, the draw cord dangles in your face...but what's worse is that the draw cord is NOT bungee cord. It's guy line. So good luck trying to get the quilt off your head in a hurry with out strangling yourself first. I had a situation where I thought a bear was in my camp. Good thing it wasn't a bear because I got so tangled up in my quilt trying to get it off my head that I would have made an easy meal for the bear. Ha! By the way, the Katabatic Flex Quilt has a baffle in the foot box to seal the hole that's left when you zipper the quilt up.

I hate being restrained when I sleep. That is why I ordered a quilt, to avoid those pesky zippers on sleeping bags. If my head is cold, i use a beanie or balaclava. I don't want to be attached to anything. You never know when you may have to exit your sleep system in a hurry.

I've got 8 of their quilts, 4 of them Top quilts (I hammock), so, aside from the natural loft of the down, they will lay like a feather comforter. And the widest width is 84" (I think. It's on the website), so with no taper, you'd have a, basically, a comforter. And it will keep you warm. There's also up to a 2" overstuff option for a little extra warmth.

I'm not sure if he mentioned this or not, kinda listened to this video while shopping for quilts, but I think it's important to note that this quilt uses UNTREATED down. Deal breaker for some, not for others. Just throwing that out there.

Great review. I received mine a few weeks ago. 950 fill, 10 degree, no taper with a fully insulated foot box and 1oz of overstuff in the body. 78” length 60” width. Testing it out in the Sierras in a few weeks!

The best trick for closing the small hole at the foot end is to just wrap the excess cord around it like a balloon, and then tuck the last little bit of cord underneath itself. It stays permanently closed this way, and you'll never have to use a sock again.

Dan, how comfortable does the nylon feel after a hot, sweaty day? Is it pretty comfortable on skin, or is it pretty sticky? Also, great review! I was all ready to get the EE, but I think you've sold me on the UGQ regardless.
