ALERT: I do, in fact, consume a Twinkie Weiner Sandwich on-camera in this one. Make of that what you will.
UHF turns 35 this year. I do too. Though Weird Al's cinematic aspirations were met with a resounding thud in 1989, his classic entry into the Slobs Vs. Snobs genre of the 80s manages to live on and thrive. So on this episode of Too Many Tapes, grab your spatulas, find the marble in the oatmeal, and let's take a look at what influenced Al's cinematic journey, and where he went from there.

As someone who has turned 35 this year, I can say that watching UHF years ago on DVD did make me appreciate what Weird Al tried to do with the movie even if not everything hit with me when I watched it the first time. 😁👍 This movie can only exist with Weird Al making it what it is because no one can make it like he did.

I suffered a series of tragedies a number of years ago, and NOTHING could make me smile. Comedy is mostly mean spirited or vulgar. It just depressed me. THEN.... I saw Weird AL's 8 videos in 8 days and I discovered Weird AL. His humor is silly, but also thoughtful and sometimes downright profound. I've been to 6 of his concerts since and I'm constantly blown away, especially his originals only tours. Thanks for this video. I LOVE UHF.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time!! And when I got the opportunity to meet Weird Al and talk to him about this movie he told me so many just cool and interesting behind the scenes tidbits that made me love it even more!

Wow!! I can't believe that someone else feels exactly the same way I do about Weird, the Al Yankovic Story. It doesn't have Weird Al's heart. I watched UHF a couple of years ago and loved it.

“Berate me in the comments” as if I don’t literally get a jolt of anxiety when the end of the month comes and there’s not a new Corey. Only a couple days later to be filled with glee that you’ve uploaded. But seriously, Too Many Tapes is one of my favorite things on the Internet. I just hope soon I can be financially stable enough to support you in Patreon. ❤

I'm a filthy casual when it comes to most things, I love UHF and Weird the Al Yankovic Story equally, I think I'm just happy when I see my favorite musician making stuff in any capacity, thankfully I do totally understand why one would like one over the other & it's always fun to see different perspectives, the world of be boring without them, This honestly felt like I was listening to someone putting their heart on the screen & I had a big dumb smile on through the whole thing.

Corey, this was great! One of my all time favorite movies that I always quote (and then get blank stares). Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, do you want to join my D&D party?

Just to be clear, when this movie was originally released the only serious competition it had was Lethal Weapon 2, which had already been out for a couple of weeks by that point. Every other summer movie had already been in theatres for weeks prior, and many of them still had an audience, but the majority of them weren’t a legitimate threat to UHF by that point

The other thing to factor in is number of theaters. UHF was on about 1,300 theaters. Despite being out for nearly month by the time UHF was released, Batman was still at 2,200 theaters. Lethal Weapon 2 opened at 500 more theaters than UHF. Indiana Jones was approaching its second month in release and was still at 1,000 more theaters than UHF. Ghostbusters II was in 1,100 more. Even Turner and Hooch, Jason in Manhattan, a re-release of Peter Pan, Parenthood, Road House, See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Great Balls of Fire, Twins and the Karate Kid 3 were in more theaters. It was a saturated market and UHF got lost in the mix. It probably would've had a better chance in the fall or spring.

@@AlecTheMovieGuy In all fairness When Harry Met Sally had entered its wide release the same week UHF dropped but it was in 500 theatres less than UHF so it theoretically shouldn’t have been a serious threat…and yet it still made five times more money that weekend. You got the right idea that they should’ve released it in the fall

All I'm saying is, impersonal, critically aclaimed and basically oscar bait? Weird: The Al Yankovic Story truly is a standard biopic.
@TooManyTapes

And, critically, has the same problem a lot of biopics of living musicians have: the musician in question is too involved in the project for any honesty to be found.

@@TooManyTapes The question is, was that intentional? If not, I still enjoy the film but if it is intentional? That might actually be a whole new level of parody.
