The famous clip from "Star Trek 5 : The Final Frontier" with Nichelle Nichols dancing her distracting part. The song is called "The Moon's Window To Heaven". It is said that in the movie version of the song, Nichelle Nichols is actually the vocalist as well as the dancer. I once met Nichelle Nichols at a space exploration conference and had a chance to talk with her one to one. I asked her what scene was her favorite. This scene was her choice.

Both Nichelle Nichols and Majel Barrett-Roddenberry showed me that sexuality is not just a game for the young. TNGs "Cost of Living" re-taught the lesson Nichelle Nichols teaches here. Uhura shows her captive audience what time it is and Lwaxana Troi showed how Betazoids tell you what time it is.

Posted for the consideration and reference of the Star Trek Continues group. This particular video clip is from Star Trek V: The Final Frontier released in 1989. Nichelle Nichols, the original actress who played the character Uhura, is recovering from a mild stroke. When I met Nichelle at a space exploration conference held in Anaheim, California around 1989 or 1990, I asked her what her favorite scene was. She said this one was. Therefore, we've posted this clip in wishes of her speedy recovery! Best wishes Nichelle!

No, it is NOT "said that in the movie version of the song, Nichelle Nichols is actually the vocalist..." It might have been dubbed for a technical reason. When making a film there are numerous technicians around, sometimes it's difficult to make everyone quiet enough for a singing vocal take, it's possible she wasn't available for post-production.

@@duodave She was available for post-production. In her autobiography, Nichelle Nichols wrote that Harve Bennett and William Shatner assured her that even if her song "Hauntingly" (the song that was originally playing while they filmed) had to be cut, then she would be the singer for whatever song was chosen for the scene. She was told this for weeks. Then Bill let it slip that the new song was already recorded by someone else. This is Nichelle's real voice: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpunaKhuorBoh5o

Love your comment! From what I understand, there were two versions of this song created for Final Frontier. The official soundtrack album for Final Frontier has a jazz & vocal version of this song by the band Hiroshima. I think June, the lead singer for Hiroshima, is heard in that version. But, in the version heard on-screen in Final Frontier, the vocal track is actually belonging to Nichelle Nichols. Many people do not realize that Nichelle Nichols has tremendous musical and vocal talents with much experience singing with the great jazz musicians of the mid-20th Century. Nichols recently (2015) released a vocal album also.

@@CrixusHeart oh I'm not in doubt of her seductive capabilities. It's more that she was late 50s (15 years older than my parents, and closer in age to my grandparents) at the time this was filmed. While women in their 50s can be beautiful, glamorous, and highly desirable, that's not something that was much acknowledged in the late 80s. Seeing someone the same age as granddad's youngest sister doing a fan dance was really quite strange to me. Also, there are other means of distraction that didn't involve Uhura getting naked. Like pretending to be part of the Army of Light and claiming to be wounded, then just stunning everyone.

Nichelle Nichols herself sings the lead vocal on the track. However, there was a bit of controversy when the movie studio released the soundtrack CD, the music was the version played by the contemporary rock band Hiroshima and had a lead vocal by their lead singer. Nichelle had a historic track record of singing with huge big band leaders in the 1950s through 1970's (even later perhaps?). Prior to her career in Hollywood and television, Nichelle sang and danced with very prominent black big bands. The US had a prominent, well-respected big band sound from the then contemporary Black sounds from mid-20th Century artists and orchestras. I recall reading that she had stage experience dancing, singing, and participating withCount Basie and his Orchestra as well as other prominent Black big bands. So, Nichelle definitely has her own voice and her own skill set to hold her own in this. As I wrote in the original posting back 7 years ago, when I attempted a National Space Society national conference in the 1980's or early 1990's (it was held in Anaheim Convention Center), Nichelle and her team were on the floor of the convention. Nichols had a huge role in recruiting the original female and the original non-white astronauts, including Sally Ride, Judy Resnick, Ron McNair, El Onizuka, and more. So, in many ways, Nichols' role in Star Trek played an active role in opening spaceflight for the human race.

You are quite welcome Dana. Final Frontier has many critics. However, recently, I watched a version on broadcast cable TV. I was impressed with the cinematography involved. If you look critically at the scenes on the initial planet (which this scene is from that sequence of the film), one can argue that the Star Trek production team and Mr. Shatner were literally decades ahead of current events at the time. Look carefully at the cinematography and the allegory involved. My view is that they were making a comment on the degeneration of peace in the middle east.

In the film, the song is sung by Nichelle. It's the official soundtrack album that has a different vocal track. I guess I'm unclear who is singing on the vocal track on the Final Frontier album now.
