UK Caravan v UK 5th Wheel

There's always an assumption that 5th wheels - because they look so much bigger - are longer, harder to tow, difficult to site. This isn't always the case as you'll see in this video.
Ofcourse a rig could be longer or shorter depending on what's what, but we've tried to be fair in this comparison in budget and the towing length of a UK caravan/car rig versus a UK fifth wheel/truck rig. As you can see there's not a massive difference in the length, but there's a big difference with how you might enjoy it! Just look at the living space, sleeping arrangements and bathroom 👍.

The payload of the max-equipped UK Ford Ranger is 2240lbs. The pin weight of this Rockwood is about 2000lbs when loaded. So unless your truck, your passengers, and your fuel tanks weigh less than 240lbs - you are already over capacity. You should never be even close to your max tow capacity or your max payload, let alone over it. It's not just your safety, but those of your passengers and other people on the road.

A Ford Ranger should NEVER be towing a 5th wheel, no matter what weight it is. This is SO unsafe!!

We have been towing them on Ford Ranger’s for 15 years if there set up correctly they are perfectly safe One customer has done over 60,000 miles towing regards Paul

The unloaded weight of the Rockwood (8,289 lbs) is above the tow rating of a Ranger (8,200 lbs). You are overweight before you put anything in the trailer. The Rockwood Ultralights are designed to be towed by 1/2 ton pickups, not mini-trucks.

Hi rich The Ford Ranger in the UK has a train weight of sixton we had rate them to 7 ton and they to the Rockwood with he’s totally legal on the UK roads you could do this in the USA but maybe they like selling bigger trucks

@@CCRVUK Here in the US the maximum GCWR of the Ranger is 12,500 lbs and it weighs 4,200 lbs (without payload). That would limit us to a trailer with a gross weight rating of no more than 8,300 lb (additional people or payload in the tow vehicle would reduce this). This is what Ford specs in their documentation and will be on the DOT plate inside the door. So in the US and Canada you would be in a lot of trouble if you were caught towing a trailer that with a GVWR of 9,850 lbs. The UK must be a lot more lax on these things. I don't really understand this line "in the UK has a train weight of six ton we had rate them to 7 ton". If the GCWR is 6 ton how does it become 7 ton?

@@rich7447 if you have a look on our website cc rv.co.uk and go to the services section you will see the original plate and the up rated plate these Ford Ranger is are sold all over the world they are rated at 7ton in Australia and Thailand they have only just come out in the US we have had them here for over seven years they are capable of towing these weights I think they are down rated in the US so people don’t buy them and prefer to buy an F1 50

@@CCRVUK I've never heard of that and the website isn't accessible to me. Here in the US there is really no reason to push the F150 since it is only slightly more expensive than the Ranger and Ford sells a ton of them. Most people in the US that are towing with any regularity are going to opt for a F250 to F450 (or GM/Dodge equivalents). It is likely that the increase tow capacity in the countries specified has more to do with the lack of steep grades and elevations above 5,000 ft. My normal tow vehicle is a Ram 2500 6.7 and I use that to tow a 30' enclosed car hauler (10,000 lbs). I wouldn't want to go any smaller once I hit mountains or plains winds. Thanks for the info though. It is interesting learning about the different regulations and equipment.

@@rich7447 thanks remember our fuel prices are the equivalent of $8 a gallon here in the UK so economy is very important Ford Ranger returns 30 towing and a bit more empty you wouldn’t want to run an F3 50 here especially the V10 petrol hope everything is good over there we love America and that’s why we sell 5th wheels in the uk
