Thanks for uploading the complete songs. I like 'Tell The Boys" (Murray/Callander) very much. It came second in this qualification/selection contest. I think that presenter also acted as BBC commentator in Vienna, where the Eurovision Song Contest was held. But I'd rather talk about Sandie, her string of hits and her amazing career.

Sandie should have been a global superstar

This was a very good final. Actually all songs were good. Honestly speaking, I liked 'puppet on a string' least of all. But still nice. And very good that composers were shown.

What a gem! ‘Puppet on a String’ changed my life, at the tender age of 8! Stayed up at my grandparents house in Scotland and was thrilled when Sandie smashed it out of the park in Vienna for the UK 🇬🇧, giving Britain its first win after coming 2nd 5 times in the previous 8 years, and getting more than double the points of second placed Ireland 🇮🇪 . It turned me into a life long Eurovision fan, Sandie fan, pop fan and music buyer. Absolutely loved the B-side of the single (which was my first ever record), being ‘Tell the Boys’, which would easily have won Eurovision too, had it been selected. It should’ve been released as a dance remix for gay clubs decades ago! In her autobiography ‘The World at my Feet’, Sandie writes that shd loathed Rolf Harris, the compère here , on whose BBC1 show she performed the songs: I notice he didn’t mention her once in the introduction or indeed when introducing any of the 5 songs: it was only at the very end that he did. Doubt she shed any tears when he was jailed a few years ago. Anyhow, it’s a brilliant find and thanks very much for posting it. She’s quoted as saying ‘Had a dream last night’ , written by Chris Andrews, who’d written a number of her earlier hits, was her favourite, and that ‘Puppet’ was her least favourite, but the latter went on to be a global hit (except, oddly, in the USA), have more than 200 cover versions recorded, in more than 40 languages, and is instantly recognizable from the very first note.. she eventually came to terms with it, and the slow jazzy version she later performed live, decades later, was her acknowledgment of that..

I always recall in the late 80s, she was being introduced on TV-Am good morning Britain and she had disappeared from the sofa before the introduction had finished due to the mention of Puppet on a string.

How did Puppet on a String win? There were three others much better. Tell the Boys was fantastic and you could tell how much Sandie enjoyed performing it. To be fair though any of them would have won in Vienna. Arguably our strongest year ever in terms of quality.

L'amour est blue was the best that year with Vicky leandros.

Nope, Sandie was the best with Puppet On A String, Vicky won in 1972 with Apres Toi which was a better song than her 1967 entry.

It of course went on to be a huge hit in the USA 🇺🇸, reaching #1 there the next year as an instrumental by Paul Mauriat, with the Engljsh title ‘Love is Blue’, so the song definitely had longevity and success after Eurovision, though not for Vicky on that occasion. Five years later when she won with ‘Après Toi’ I have to admit I preferred ‘Beg, Steal or Borrow’, by the New Seekers, but it was what it was: such is Eurovision!
