In her first UK EXCLUSIVE interview, acclaimed actress Jayati Bhatia talks about her key role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi on Netflix, her theatrical background and artistic survival over the years.
Bhansali's digital debut Heeramandi is a fictional series on Netflix set against the Indian independence movement against the British Raj in the 1940s. It revolves around the lives of tawaifs living in the red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore (current day, Pakistan). The scheming Mallikajaan (Manisha Koirala) rules over an elite house of courtesans - but a new rival threatens her reign as rebellion brews in British-ruled India. Principal actors include Richa Chadha, Sharmin Segal, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Aditi Rao Hydari and Sonakshi Sinha. Also actors Taha Shah Badussha, Adhyayan Suman, Shekhar Suman and Fardeen Khan.
Trained in classical Odissi dancing, Bhatia has been a talented actor whose calibre is palpable across various mediums including Television, film and now digital. She is best known for her role as Nirmala "Mataji" Bharadwaj in Sasural Simar Ka, one of the longest-running Indian television series ever. She has been a part of other successful shows like Kutumb, Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin and Sabki Laadli Bebo. Her cinema credits include Barah Aana and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Her performance in Prime Video's Dahaad was also critically acclaimed.
