UK Gladiators - Series 3 1994 - Episode 4 - Heat 4 - 1st October 1994
Clancy Connor (International skier from Crewe, Cheshire) versus Jo Banton (Gym instructor from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire)
Ric Brown (Student and lifeguard from Perth, Scotland) versus Sam Codjoe (Recreational officer from West London)
Notes: From this series onwards, Gauntlet now has a new element of 5 sectors with its point system of 10 points for less than 20 seconds and 5 points for less than 30 seconds. Power pads are now utilised for the two additional gladiators and 3 ram rods still for 3 gladiators. Chest guards are now worn by all participants for safety reasons.
Hang-Tough and Duel are in the fourth Heat of Gladiators but are not meant to be in the fourth heat.

Isaac Wide I completely agree. I really miss the old 90s weekend TV shows like this that were really entertaining and this one in particular that encouraged a positive body image with fitness and exercise. Now we have egoistical fame seeking narcissists on our screens.

This was when Gauntlet officially became a signature event. Seriously, the previous Gauntlet was way too easy with only three gladiators.

If you watch the US one, there had 5 gladiators until the last season and then 4 (because they got cheap the last season). But in both cases, it was really rare to have contestants make it through, they got brutalized, but it made it more fun when they did.

I think that's obvious, they're not going to hire an arsehole. You can see in other episodes he drops his character at points. The first time when he almost pulled a contestants shorts off in hang tough and the 2nd after the wall when he was being interviewed by blonde.

Ric was pretty unlucky in this episode. Fell off The Wall at the top, missed out on Hang Tough by about one second… those cost him a combined total of five seconds in The Eliminator. It probably wouldn’t have changed the outcome, but it would have been more exciting (and who knows what could have happened if they started The Eliminator closer together).

Amazed that they didn't ban high tackles sooner especially in men's game where the was often a huge weight difference between the gladiators and competitors.

Watching this now, it strikes me what's different format-wise to most similar shows of today - there's no little bit of cutaway fluff or banter between games for the most part. Interview over, you get a shot of the Glads or the contestant for a few seconds, then straight into the next game. I kinda like it, not that I dislike the way it is now. Maybe the new revival could strike a balance between the two? I at least hope they keep the stats screens. It'd be nice for people to see that weight =/= fat all the time huh?

The whole Sam can gimmick is embarrassing. He kept saying the catchphrase in other episodes too. He was acting as if he was undertaking a huge task. It’s gladiators not climbing Everest. Some of the contenders were clearly seeking fame just as Sam was. He’s a bin man now

Personally in my opinion I wasn't very happy about the rule of Gauntlet where if the Gladiators pushed you over the side that's it GAME OVER. Later in the years the rule was changed so that if you were throw out of the Gauntlet by the Gladiator you got to move on to the next sector and if the contender put themselves out of the Gauntlet you had to redo that sector again which I think was a lot fairer at the time. Of course in the revival series there was a cage surrounding the sides and the referee was seen up on the out-of-bounds area at all times, I guess it was to try and stop the game being restarted so many times like in the original gladiators which I think was a lot better, although John Anderson stopped the games in the 1st Revival Series too many times in my opinion and that was why he was replaced by John Coyle for the 2nd Revival Series.

yeah, i completely agree mate, and i think that the rules should have been that from this series onwards, the contenders should have been able to score 1 point for each section completed, because gauntlet was one of the toughest games, i genuinly feel that that would have been a lot fairer on the contenders from day 1, but they did change it in the 1998 series, to be fair

Techincally they did go offensive. For lack of a better term you know how in movies the swords clash before a battle? Basically that's what happened here. Contender and gladiator went on offense at the same time and cancelled each other out.
