So it would appear if a country has the power to take, it has the power to give. That's what makes UK so good, they have learned that imperial empires don't work and have learned their lesson from history. There must be strategic reasons why they yielded the territory and don't you think they did it in their own national interest in the end, it wasn't out of charity or goodwill, it was an intelligent and selfish decision like decisions made by all countries. This is not a criticism of Britain, but quite the opposite. Mauritius is an admirable country but it is tiny and powerless other than its tourism sector and affiliation with the Western super powers. I'm very proud of my heritage, but it has absolutely no financial or military power over UK and US, it only has diplomatic and has a strong relationship with India which to my mind is the only reason UK and US made this play. It is a play over other powers in Asia and other autocracies. It's so obvious. That is what I love about the West (and I don't mean just the Anglophiles), they collaborate and think big picture!!!

It's got nothing to do with proximity, it's about heritage. Why do you think the West is on Israel's side right now, I'm not saying I agree with everything Israel is doing but they are the living ancestors of Christianity and look where Israel is? Completely isolated from the (modern) Western superpowers geographically. It's got nothing to do with borders and distance.

I agree with all points of view given here. I'm actually an Australian of direct Mauritian descent. I can completely understand why people would be asking why give it back when it wasn't theirs in the first place. In fact what is Mauritius in the first place but a human construction only defined in the past few hundred years.. the same could be said about all countries. Some countries are ancient and some are modern, many rise and many fall. At the end of the day all boundaries in the world are defined by humans and are either taken by force or given by more powerful countries. It is nice to see that war wasn't involved in this dispute and I am relieved that this makes strategic sense for the region and many other countries in the world.

So how and when were the Chagos people consulted about the hand over of soveriegnty? They were not. It seems to me that Article 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has been ignored because of prejudice against the United Kingdom and its history.
