you can't if either the x or y terms are not the same. you would have to perform elimination method or substitution method

@@loredfolk1069 You can; that's the trick to the question in itself. Subtracting the second equation from the first leaves you with 3x + 3y = -5, which is what the question is asking for; there's no need to work out the individual values of x/y.
