@@irenedavo3768 I would hope you come and open a facility and employ nurses as opposed to coming back to be an employee. Also if you choose to come back as a nurse you would be far more advantageous as your NA experience would elevate you above your colleagues in a very noticeable way as such you would not make what nurses there make. They would pay you relatively higher than the local nurses but it would be lower than what you make now. That being said you would still be living a much better and stress free life and your money would be far reaching than currently not to mention the freedom and many countless additional possibilities you can create there but not in the current Diapora you find yourself in. Quality of life would be a lot better for you. Cheers

Am a nurse who trained in the UK. A few years back I took a career break to come and work in Ghana. The impediments put in my way was beyond belief. I did get the opportunity to work in the most amazing private hospital in Ghana. But I had to leave because of the said impediments. There's so much we can do to help our nation if only they can make it possible

Hi Bhekie Nxumalo. I certainly agree with you. I am glad that Britain got rid of 1'st level nursing. I found it to be discriminative because I found them to be of equal abilities to 2nd level nurses. The different status created differences between the two grades of nurses, as I experienced. I was not surprised at all. There is harmony now & team work on the nursing floors.

Hi TMobile Temp. You just stated above the nurses in Ghana have theoretical knowledge, how can they now lack knowledge here? I agree with you to some extent. If there is lack of awareness in infection control, surly, there must have been incidents of outbrake of contagious diseases. Lessons in manual handling perhaps, may be required for the health & safety of the nurse.

This is so interesting. Ghana needs investment in health, this is evident from the discussion. I can see manual handling in terms of health and safety for both the staff and patients could use an overhaul. An idea would be a health and safety co-ordinator for the hospitals who could carry out risk assessments and specific training and courses in manual handling etc, . Priority is investment.

I am extremely surprised of what I heard about the experiences of these nurses, whiles working in Ghana. I trained in Ghana many, many years ago & we never had this sort of problems. All the experiences they narrated, unfortunately, I did experience here in the UK, believe me or not. I was the more horrified when I went through same experiences here. It does show to me that, resources could not truly be the only problem, but also, management, policies & procedures, which underpin the sort of care received by patients. The nursing training I had whiles in Ghana, was very high & is exemplified by the fact that, I was admitted to The Roll of Nurses in the UK in 1971, without any further study requirement. The problem now facing Ghana although due to lack of resources in view of the fact that, patients have now got to pay for their medication etc, which is disturbing to me, there are other factors such as made out above. Often when I travelled back to Ghana, (some years now), I had made payments for medication of strangers who have sought help from me. It had been a heart wrenching experience for me. Having put the experiences of these nurses to the World, it would be helpful if we can find a way of helping, not only Ghana but any other Country where there are problems with nursing & medical care provision. The Voluntary Services Overseas, is unable to deal with all the problems across the globe: we must all help.

Were these UK nurses in Ghana to observe or to work?
@eka-a99544 жыл бұрын
Well done to all of them. I believe the main problem is that most Nurses and medical staff in ghana do not communicate well with the patients and their families as compared to how it is done in the uk. Nurses and doctors in the uk communicate with you from start to finish, anytime you see them. They fully explain to you what procedure needs to be done, why it has to be done and also advise on what the outcome will be. Again, most patients and their families are afraid to ask questions because of the fear of being referred to as "too known" in the Ghanaian parlance. So they just keep mute and do not question procedures or medication given to their family members. Lastly, i will say that all medical staff in Ghana need to be held accountable as is done in the uk...they must have a duty of care to their patients and the patient's family.

Hi T-Mobile Temp. There are more reasons underpinning maternal & neonatal deaths in Ghana & other developing Counties, other than merely lack of materials & equipments. Perception & foresight could be an issue underpinning these fatalities, as I conceived. These are concepts not thought at Nursing Training Colleges but acquired from experience as well as being an innate quality of an individual nurse/midwife. The above speculations of mine, can be the stepping stones of developing strategies in minimising the fatalities, if not completely eliminating them.

We will know the damage to the baby when he starts school
@esthermensah53463 жыл бұрын
Hi T-Mobile Temp. I don't think the baby will have any neurological difficulties, for the fact that he/she suffered from asphyxia Pallida("Blue baby") & not livida ("White baby") : sever form of asphyxia(lack of oxygen). This may be so possibly, because the placenta may have been operating because for 20 minutes, the survival rate would have been otherwise zero. There had been instances when I had whole-handedly, resuscitated babies with asphyxia livida("White babies") successfully within 3 minutes with no neurological effect. In one instance, I had no option than to suck the baby's nose with my mouth because there was no suction aparatus. One has to understand the physiology & mechanism of resuscitation in order to revive an anoxic baby. That was the training I had in Ghana. The standard at the time of my training was very high, which was reinforced in the UK.
