I remember when I was little one Christmas we were so poor my mother had no money but she wanted to give me some Christmas presents. So she got one of my old dolls and made clothes for her and made a little bed and blankets for her and wrapped it up for me. I feel we don't know if all off of these clips. Yes she will regret it, she probably does at the end of the day, probably cries when her boys tell her for the hundredth time they don't want the noodles and she can't get them a giant meal of everything to make up all the nights of noodles. We don't know it all, who knows what all is going on when the cameras stop rolling . Maybe there are no sweet words and snuggles, or maybe it just doesn't show and only show the yelling.

No family period its not just the kids. These parents are trying. Kids are meant to have two parents/ even if the relationship ends the parent who doesn’t live with the kids needs to pay child support or their kids suffer. Moms & dads who live with the kids pay child support every day making sure they have food, clean clothes, a roof over their head. It’s unacceptable for that responsibility to be all one one parent. Shame on the girls mom & the other families dad. One person can only do so much.

You can get out of that cycle but it gets worse before it gets better if you have no help. Education and good personal choices will save you. That and a lot of prayer

And they were all rather chunky, for a poor family, so certainly weren't going without food. However I thought both the dad and gran came across as lovely people.

The single father of 7 is such a loving father. Very few men would stick around and raise 7 kids alone without having to rush and find a new woman. I’m crying my eyes out because of the way my family wastes groceries and “last year’s clothing”…and leftovers”. I never thought of kids in poverty lacking food and shelter. That's how I grew up. Worked since 12 legally (summer work programs) and at 14 at Burger King (with a work permit), and every pay period, was handing over half of my check for either the light bill or the water bill. Mom and Dad wasn't buying my food or clothes. And this was in the 80s.

When I was younger we were dirt poor, and my dad was in prison. But even if my mom only had a dollar in the bank account she would make sure I was not only taken care of, but well off. I never knew our financial situation until we got out of poverty, I appreciate my mom more than she’ll ever know.

Your mother let you have a childhood unencumbered from the worry and stress these kids deal with when they take on and/or are told in depth about their parents financial difficulties. While all these parents love their children, I think atleast to an extent, parents should try to shield kids from adult difficulties and to let them be carefree and innocent as long as possible.

I always watch these documentaries as the issue is so important to me due to how personal it is. I'm usually okay but this one brought back way too much suppressed trauma for my liking 😪 The way the stressed out mum says "they're the best kids..." then passively aggressively chimes in "Even though they do my head in" and the boy replied sadly "I love you mum"... this reminds me of my own childhood a lot. my mom was unemployed because she was physically disabled and couldn't afford constant daycare for all 3 of us. as for the father, he wanted nothing to do with us. our fridge was often empty and there were days, when we couldn't have toilet paper either. my sisters got sick often due to all mold in the apartment. even our clothes smelled like mold. it broke my heart when we couldn't get them any birthday or christmas gifts. but i made sure to draw them something special with what i had. when i finally reached a certain age, i took a student loan merely to support my family financially. but at that point i had become like a co-parent, because my mom tried to spend everything on alcohol and cigs and was incapable to do anything because she reached her breaking point. so i had to skip days at school, just so that i could look after her and my sisters. i'm still paying off the debt, but it was worth it to see my family members smile again for the first time in years.

Running out of toilet paper as kids sucked. I remember the days of using newspaper instead, when we would run out of toilet paper ...and even salt dipped on our toothbrushes when we couldn't afford toothpaste. These are two things I (toilet tissue and toothpaste) always have excess of in the cupboards as an adult ..as it was the total pits as a kid!

If I were the black family I'd prioritize bulk items like rice , beans , peanut butter Tuna fish , powdered milk and root vegetables on " Payday" that can stretch a long way . I love watching Lindsey hold her own with the bullies ! The dress on the redhead looked more classy and original than a lot of her friends outfits and Lindsey's grandma's mad painting skills can pretty up even a toilette !

I had the same thought. the little one is sick of noodles and I thought, a bit of broth and rice is lovlely. or beans and tomato paste with canned corn. shepherds pie. theres a lot of options for bulk meals. maybe not as tasty or fresh but healthy and cheap non the less.

If you don't know how the flavors will marry, or how potent one is over another, you'll miss a huge world of wonderful, affordable meals. Ghetto gourmet is still gourmet when you're down and out.

I used to be in the same boat as these kids. I had a single mom w/t 3 other siblings pact in a cramped trailer with little food. We were bullied for our lifestyle. However, we decided make a few risky investments using the little money we had in each of our bank accounts. Luckily we hit it big and managed to get into the upper middle class a few years later. Now we are able to afford going to college and have other luxuries. I am very grateful for the things I have now, however I will never forget my humble beginnings. I hope that these kids are able to achieve just like me and my family did. God bless them🙏🏽

I remember my prom. We bought a very simple dress for about $50 and because my best friend did not have any money for her dress, my mom graciously bought a dress for my friend. I love how this mom produced a pretty but inexpensive dress for her daughter. I love that the kids are selling their toys - they have far too many. My mom would have me select a good used toy each year to give away to another child. It would be wrapped up and given away. This is how she taught us to put others before ourselves. Luckily we did not have the Internet, magazines and other wasteful items to make us want for more.

As a 2nd gen Mexican American, I relate to this so much. I grew up with 3 siblings, my mom stayed home and my dad would work 2-3 jobs at a time. Still, we had very little money so we all lived in a 1 bedroom apartment. I was aware of our financial difficulties, so now even though my dad started his own business and earns very well, I still hate asking him for anything because my brain automatically goes to worrying about his bills. I’m starting college soon and I really hope I do well so I can earn $100k/year (midwest) fresh out of college. I want to earn enough so my parents can retire early. I also want to give the best Christmas gifts :)

There is some good documentaries about Appalachian families, no heat for some in winter, and a lot of drug addicted parents. They also lack basic healthcare in some areas, a team of volunteer Drs and dentists go there once a year. When the doctors come, people travel for miles and camp out overnight for their tickets be seen. I find it weird that America seems to forget about them, what could they learn from this documentary I wonder?

Homelessness is becoming worse by the day, I'm in "beautiful sunny Florida" but my car gets spat on as I drive by homeless because I can't give them anything, while my own stomach is growling and I'm only trying to work to not be homeless as well.

I remember my favorite Christmas. We were living in Cabrini green in Chicago. I was the baby of 5. My mom didn't have money for the holidays. She popped popcorn and trimmed the tree with it and bought a monopoly game for the other 4 children. She bought me a little doll lol. We listened to Carol's all night while mom and siblings played monopoly. I will never forget. I miss her so much 😇

There are much worse off, I hate to say it. Of course if the people who actually could help would, it really wouldn't be that way. The ones who want to help, like you and me and most of the people watching, simply can't. It would be unfair to do it once and give them hope and not be able to remain consistent. If you have it to give, then give.

I will never forget being left homeless with my then three young children after my daughter's one emergency heart surgery. We were staying in a motel for the night and it was actually my youngest daughter's birthday too... I was telling my kids to think of it as a fun trip like camping kinda.. I remember hiding in the bathroom crying with my foot against the door because I was so afraid, we had absolutely nothing and I didn't have the slightest idea what we were going to do.

I've had to move in with my mum, at 33, with 2 children, after having a nice house, good money etc. We all share 1 room. Have nothing to our name. If you were to interview my kids about it, they'd have no idea about finances or what danger of being homeless we are actually in. Kids don't need these burdens.

I remember when I was younger (6-7 years old) my dad finally got me back from my mom after she took me from Jamaica and he went broke after countless court cases. We moved to Florida, were homeless for a few months and then lived in an apartment. I remember not noticing so many things like how my aunt used to come over with plates of food for weeks, and how all my clothes were given to me by my cousins, how he never bought me anything but my aunts did, how he didnt work for a really long time, how empty the apartment looked, how the lights were almost never on, how we almost got evicted (age 15), how I became so money conscious at such a young age, and so many more things. I feel it for these kids as I related to them at one point. Now I am almost 18 and back in Jamaica and in a MUCH BETTER situation. I am so grateful for everything and I pray these children will come of it soon just like my dad and I did
