This happens fast and it just takes one scummy family to trigger it. Down my road we have a, let's say "traveller family" who were fly tipping their rubbish, everything from food waste to used nappies along a little path running next to their house. Within a week the path had been filled up, people fly tipping from across town and even out of town. It spread to a second path a couple of hundred metres away. This took a couple of weeks and was followed by increases in anti-social behaver. How was it resolved? One night the residents in the early hours picked up every piece of litter and filth along the road, the 1KM length and piled it all up on their front garden as a nice surprise for when they woke up, a 10 foot pile of not just their own shit but every chunk of dog and fox crap, I even suspect the dog poo bins in the town were emptied out on their lawn too, judging by the stench and number of small tied up bags that was in their pyramid of shame. Before you ask how did we know it was them, they were filmed on locals' CCTV cameras, people pointed them at the alley and their house. Of course, the extensive evidence was presented to the police, council and environmental heath office who refused to intervene against obvious criminality and a clear public health issue, Tory council BTW, an always Tory council, or so the Tories on it believed at the time. It's a Labour council now, the first time via being elected as opposed to the Tories resigning after bankrupting the council (twice while I was at school). For context my town is considered one of the more affluent in the country, 20 miles southish of Cambridge.

O my gawd! What the Hell! Where's the pride of the residents?! Surely they can do SOMETHING to help themselves. Of course, they won't, then they'll blame the government when their children get very sick. Who the hell, or should I say WHAT the hell people live there? I just googled why it's like that, and of COURSE, the residents blame lack of leadership. Like raising their children to be respectful and well-behaved is somehow the governments fault. We have cities like that here, they go down HARD, then, when those people who let this happen finally lose EVERYTHING, other people go in, buy their houses CHEAP, fix them up and revitalize it. It's not the governments fault, people. Get off your asses! Other than that, Joe....lol...Jen

It starts with one resident and the building factors or Landlords being too shit scared to speak to them. They built beautiful waterfront flats in Edinburgh, absolutely lovely place to stay, they have a bin area where you take your rubbish down and tip it in a dumpster, 1 year later the rubbish is tumbling out the door, and there's mattresses and sofa's in the gardens. Is it the Residents or the Refuse Collectors at fault? Your problem needs the Residents of the street to care , and get together of a weekend, and shovel all that into a pick up! You did right reporting on it! Now you need Community Group to lobby the MP for that area and investigate the cause. Here we are recycling and washing and sorting all our plastic and I heard reports from someone at the recycling centre that it's all going into landfill coz they ain't got the staff!

14 years of austerity. Bankrupt councils over England. And after a while people lose hope. Why wold you bother when no one else does. If there is a really high drug problem, you wouldn't even try to get people together to clear it up. Not if there's a chance of needles. You need to take care, please, when you're in areas like this. 5.35 could be Asbestos, I clean the streets for the council in a couple of villages in the western highlands of Scotland and have done for over 25 years and love it. Our villages are kept clean until tourist season then it becomes a shite hole but double time on a Sunday is a blessing due to them and the mess they make. People living here take pride in their area. Birmingham is just like any other city too many people not enough funding our council workers to help tackle the issue.
