My dad was a GI during WWII, and when in London, he would get fish and chips. He described the fish as snow white and perfectly cooked. They would be served in a cone of newspaper. He'd get an order and walk through London before heading back to the barracks.

@@ozone1959 Are you mixing up the UK and Great Britain? Great Britain is the name of the Island that includes England, Wales and Scotland… The UK is the union of those three and Northern Ireland… The name Britain, in one form or another, existed way before the union… Arguably Fish and Chips is English, although apparently that style of fish leads back to Portuguese, Jewish people that were displaced due to the Spanish Inquisition and such… The fried potato chip seems to have come a while later… But it seems they were combined in England… Still, it’s pretty popular throughout Britain now, possibly Ireland as well, but I’m not as sure of that… I expect it is… I think calling it British is reasonable.

Fish and chips are enjoyed by Aussies in every season. Any town close to the sea has a fish 'n chip shop serving fresh fish. These villagers should try a potato cake or dim sims. When I was a kid, I'd sneak off the school grounds with a mate at lunchtime and trot to the local fish 'n chip shop. Depending on how much change we'd scrounged we bought a minimum chips and to share and 1 or 2 fried dims sims each. Those really were golden days, although that only became apparent years later.

The group is always a delight to view. Thank you so much for sharing their opinions with all of us. They are always open to learning and trying new things. Perhaps it would be helpful if you explained to them why many lands do not eat roti/breads with every meal. For instance…if there is a carbohydrate “IN THE MEAL” (like potatoes) there is little reason to add more carbohydrate by way of bread. Most people now try to balance their food groups at each meal with a normal grouping of each food group. 1: protein, 2: vegetable, 3: dairy, 4: carbohydrate. Since they love to learn….they might better understand the different meals going forward. Please, please serve them a beverage with their meals. Water is great!

As a 4th generation Texan, with a southern border on the Gulf of Mexico, I was always taught that if a fish has a very strong fishy smell, then it's not fresh. Of course, there will be some slight fishy smell, but if it's strong, then the fish is not fresh.

As a man who fish myself and has caught a large veriety of fish. different fish smell smell different as they are. different kinds smell more or less fish. Cod and perch doesn't smell much for an example. while Pike or Bream smells a lot (even alive that is) strong smell usually couples with more fishy taste. So I wouldn't trust just the smell to tell if a fish is fresh or not.

It feeds 10s of millions every day- and yet it smells awful. 😀 I bet Carp is what these guys refer to when they speak of "thorny" fish. I was very surprised to see a fish and chip shop on holiday in Canada on the shores of Lake Huron - thinking we were so far from the sea that the fish would just be frozen sea fish. But no, it turned out the fish was a large freshwater fish (whitefish or walleye, I think) fished freshly from Lake Huron. It was really good with a texture and flavour not unlike cod or haddock. I think that there is a chef that makes the different dishes. However, a lot of times, things get lost in translation - or some ingredients are intentionally left out. For example - one time they prepared BLT sandwiches - but switched some kind of beef for the bacon (due to the illogical superstition about pork). You cannot have a BLT without bacon.....that is just wrong ! I know it is against their religion - but if I cooked for them.....I would try to sneak it in !!

Back in 1970 or so, a chain known as "Chesley Fipps" fish and chips became popular. I would drive down and pick up my families order usually. Sometimes someone else would go instead of I. Turns out the family said it tasted better when I picked up the order. I figured out later that the very British girl was saying" malt vinegar with that?". This dish originated in England (Great Britain), where they call fried potatoes "Chips". In the US we would call fried potatoes "French Fries" but more specifically the "Chips" served in the "Fish & Chips" dish, would be closer to what we in the US call "Steak Fries". They are bigger and thicker cuts of potatoes, compared to our normal "French Fries" People here love to dip their "Chips/Fries" into sauces.. like Catsup, Mustard, BBQ Sauce, Honey, and Ranch Dressing, just to name a few.

I heard that in England (I’m a Yank), a lot of places aren’t using cod any longer because it’s too expensive. True? We had a great fast food chain in the states called Arthur Treacher’s (remember that?), which was enormously successful until new management switched from cod to some other fish. I can’t remember which species is said to be “close” to cod, but it sure isn’t. People immediately noticed the difference and stopped going there. As for me, I loved the place both before and after.
