Memories! I was 12 at the time and remember trips to Stratford-upon-Avon in the summer holidays. I know nearly all of the songs! North and South had their own TV programme on BBC1 called 'No Sweat'. Didn't last long. Heard the lead was working as a builder. Code Red I believe were big in South East Asia. Got to admit that was a good cover of the Beatles classic by Wet, Wet, Wet. Great time for R&B. Everyone knows 'Tubthumping'. This is a great bunch of songs! 1997 one of the best years. I was obsessed with Shola Ama. Sneaker Pimps were from my home city. Thank you for this excellent upload Francis 👍 My top favourite is 'Everything' by Mary J Blige. Wonderful song and timeless sounding. If I ever get married (only in my head), I want that played at my wedding. Shola Ama's funky 'You're The One I Love', Mariah Carey's sexy and sultry 'Honey', Le Click's forgotten dance classic 'Call Me'. Never understood why that was never a big hit! It had a lot of airplay. Kayo has a wonderful voice (also went to Eurovision for Sweden in 2002 as part of a group) and many many more.

Excellent work Francis. Always good to hear electronic music from years gone by. And also a nice amount of modern rock songs as well.

Lazy Line Painter Jane by Belle & Sebastian should have charted higher than No.41, those soaring vocals of Monica Queen are what make it wonderful. Also, that top 40 chart for the final week of that month was not broadcast on Radio One, due to the passing of Princess Diana. It was also the same time in which Britpop ended.

As a longtime B&S fan, I couldn't agree more. Actually I am in complete agreement with all of your comment. The Summer of 1997 was indeed the point where Britpop suddenly (and painfully) went out of fashion.

I was in that weird period between ending high school and starting college. I remember about 90% of these songs but, as a spotty Indie Kid who listened to John Peel and the Evening Session on BBC Radio 1, I'm pretty sure that I probably hated about 99% of what was in the charts back in August 1997.

that Tina Moore song was actually a garage remix that was released as a single

1996 and 1997 are probably my least favourite years of the the 90s. But it was quite an enjoyable listen. DJ Quicksilver is my fave song on the list.
