Great work as always, and a whole lot of work, when I see the duration of this video! 54 minutes, and so many songs only lasted for 1 week in the charts! Thank you very much for this, Francis!

Haha.

Thank you so much Francis for another great German Singles Chart video! 😃👋👌The following songs are the most underrated ones IMO and should have been bigger hits: Republica - Ready to Go & Drop Dead Gorgeous (at least both went top 20 in the UK), X-Perience - Magic Fields (I prefer it to their big hit 'A Neverending Dream'), Soraya - Suddenly & Stay Awhile (I guess people bought the album instead which went top 10), Depeche Mode - Home (they had so many German top 5 & top 10 hits yet this great song only peaked at no.11), Texas - Black Eyed Boy (top 5 in the UK though) and Coleske - Take Me Where the Sun Is Shining (great song from South Africa).

Wham!’s “Last Christmas” was the first to enter twice on two occasions in the first week of the year and the second week of December this year in 1997 and it has charted ever since in Germany deciding to reach the top spot over two years ago on the final chart of the year in 2021 by kicking out a Christmas classic from Mariah Carey. Despite it originally reached number seven in 1984.

Two things I noticed, so many covers, and the “Faithless” sound from 95/96 (“I can’t get no sleep” etc”) had become very popular edit - and OMC just couldn’t get that follow-up hit!

Can someone explain to me what happened between 1997 and 1999? I 1997, you have these cheap pizzicato tracks and Eurodance like Captain Jack that sounds so dated compared to what Dance Music could do in 1999. It seems that I only got the top of the ice berg from 1997, while I know a lot more from 1999.

There was a huge jump in quality terms between '97 and '99. Not only music envolved faster at the time, video productions and fashion trendy too. Nowadays a decade does not make much of a difference. Compare 93 with 03 and 2013 with 2023 and you'll see.

@@tonybenlozz2907 Yeah, I dared to send a mail to my favourite music podcast asking that exact question! They answered me that there indeed as you correctly say was a huge leap in production quality. PCs got not only better but they became affordable and therefor the music producing software was easier to purchase. I'll always remember the Trance legend M.I.K.E. aka Push / Plastic Boy saying that he had to produce his music on more or less one session on a day because it wasn't possible to save stuff. That changed in the end of the 1990s. But yeah, I'm listening to 80s charts at the moment. Synths got a lot better in the second half of the 90s for different reasons. I mean, it has been almost 20 years since the synthesizer hit the mainstream charts and everybody was using them. There had to be constant improvement and there was a demand. Then you had the chance to use more audio tracks and therefor the music got a lot richer in sounds. It's a really fascinating development. To me it's always a mixture of funny and weird when these music producer guys say on their podcast that "tunes from the late 90s sound so dated or cheap" because they have very good ears when it comes to production quality and mastering. To me I do not care too much about that.

Though I'm not a music expert, I've been listening a lot to music for over 25 years now. With so many songs to me it's super obvious how clean, boring, bland, radio friendly they were produced. There's no edge, no depth, no surprises, just the simplest lyrics you can think of and the most generic sounds. All those who say the charts aka commercial music was better back in the 1990s, I don't really think so. There was really good stuff and then there was a lot of trash that's mostly forgotten. I'm heavily biased. I'd really like to check out later editions from 2010 onward if I can find even 20 songs I like from all the new entries.

1997....a very strong year musically. 'Macarena Christmas' as pointless as an appendix. What possessed them to release this? I naively thought 'Pony' was about a horse lol. Definitely the period of bubblegum pop (a twinky version of Justin Timberlake) r&b and dance music. I'm glad Germany's boring Eurovision entry by Bianca Shomburg got rejected by the record buying public. Ironically Michelle was in the same qualifier and beaten by Bianca but with a different song than on here. On the subject of Eurovision, our last winner 'Love Shine A Light' beat the local entry! 26 years since our last winner. Those R Kelly songs have different meanings and are tainted now. Steel Pulse are from the area of Birmingham, UK I am from (Handsworth). Two very hot guys in that Charley Theo dance cover of 'Just Can't Get Enough' 😋 RIP Aaron Carter. Shame he had problems with addiction in his troubled life. Remember taking the Mickey out of 'Crazy Little Party Girl' by teasing a girl in my class calling her bag 'Crazy Little Party Bag' 😂 I had a Tamagotchi...mine always died or looked like gremlins lol 🤣 Jimmy Ray, I found him very hot at the time. My sister got told off for staying up late (she was 10/11 then) for watching the 'Smack My Bitch Up' video! It's bad, but not as bad as the videos of now. Many amazing songs here. My big favourites are 'Hedonism' by Skunk Anansie, 'Together Again' by Janet Jackson, 'Love (Don't Let Go)' by En Vogue 'Where Have All The Cowboys Gone' by Paula Cole and 'Warum?' by Tic Tac Toe. Thanks so much Francis. Great work 👍

Pizzicato dance. Sash!, Future Breeze, Gorgeous, DJ Quicksilver, Brooklyn Bounce, Three 'N One, Celvin Rotane, DJ Red 5, even Energy 52's Café del Mar... Hypertrophy, Disco Citizens, Porn Kings, Beam & Yanou, ... I like some of these tunes but most aren't really good...I only listen to the ones I like from time to time but after hearding that same sound so much I start to hate it.^^

Thanks for your work. Maybe it would have been better to just take the top 50. Everything in the charts was unbelievable back then. The quality has dropped significantly compared to the 70s and 80s. So many bad cover versions.

Selten so etwas peinlich gehört.
