00 :00 Introduction
Hello and welcome to today’s video on the differences between a Skilled Worker visa and Self-Sponsorship process.
Technically, both routes involve applying for a Skilled Worker visa, but with the latter you will be applying for a Skilled Worker visa under the sponsorship of your own company
00:44 Agenda 1 : Difference of Registering a Company
• A key part of Self-Sponsorship is setting up a company if the applicant does not already have one
• It is possible to register a UK company if you are based overseas, but the applicant might require a UK-based representative who can take on director duties if they cannot fulfil them themselves
• Must have relevant experience, skills or qualifications for the business they wish to operate in
• They should create a business plan, have sufficient funds to set up the business and acquire the supporting documentation
01:29 Agenda 2 - Difference of Acquiring a Sponsor Licence
• Once the company is set up, those on the Self Sponsorship route must apply for a Sponsor Licence
• Same process as normal - applicants will have to provide the four supporting documents, draft an information letter, provide an organisation chart and complete the form
• This step requires a person who is settled in the UK or a British citizen who can take on the role of Level 1 User / key personnel role
• Must show that the business is genuine, and the vacancy planned for the applicant is for an appropriate position
02:14 Agenda 3 - Difference of Sponsoring Yourself
• The Level 1 User will then request and assign a Certificate of Sponsorship for the applicant
• The applicant can then apply for a Skilled Worker visa
• Must pass usual requirements (like the minimum salary threshold and a TB test if moving from a listed country)
• It is different from applying as a normal Skilled Worker as the applicant will be employing themselves
02:46 Agenda 4 - Difference of Controlling Your Future
• The applicant does not have to find a company with a vacancy - it will be the applicant’s own genuine company with a genuine vacancy
• The applicant does not have to worry about sponsorship being cancelled and can sponsor for maximum length of five years, if they wish
03:19 Agenda 5 - Difference of Convenience
• Self-sponsorship is easier for entrepreneurs who are planning to move to the UK and set up a business as they can also get a visa through this process and therefore kill two birds with one stone
• However, in general, it is a longer process as the applicant must set up a company first and acquire a sponsor licence
• It is also more expensive as not only will the applicant have to pay to set up a company and acquire a sponsor licence, but they must also pay all of the associated costs of the visa
