David Lammy, the UK’s new foreign secretary, announced on Friday that the UK government is restoring funding for Unrwa, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, with a pledge of £21m ($27m).
Lammy said that Unrwa is crucial for delivering humanitarian aid into Gaza and for supporting rebuilding efforts in the enclave, particularly once a ceasefire is reached.
The decision to restore funding comes five months after the UK, along with several other western countries, suspended funding to the agency following accusations by Israel that 12 of Unrwa's 30,000 employees had participated in Hamas's surprise attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023.
In response to these accusations, the UN commissioned former French foreign minister Catherine Colonna to review the allegations and Unrwa's operations. The inquiry concluded in April and found no evidence of wrongdoing by Unrwa staff.
The report noted that Israeli authorities had not provided "any supporting evidence" for their allegations of links between Unrwa staff and Hamas and did not respond to Unrwa’s requests in March and April for names and evidence necessary to initiate an investigation.
