Torbay is a region in Devon on the south west coast of the UK. Comprising of three main areas Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. This region of the UK has been at the centre of a huge number of negative headlines and media coverage...
With worrying headlines about Torquay & Paignton such as:
'Torquay named among Britain's Worst Seaside Towns':
www.devonlive....
'Seaside Town is Tormented by Feral Kids as young as 9':
www.thesun.co....
'British Seaside Town 'Overrun with Feral roof top Yobs':
www.mirror.co....
With one national tabloid comparing the area to a 'Warzone', I hit the streets of Torquay & Paignton to investigate whether the rumours and negative headlines about this area of the UK are correct... Why are British Seaside Towns seemingly Dying before our eyes? In this Documentary we investigate the problems faced and solutions on offer.

I’ve lived in Torquay all my life, and I hate having to go into the town centre. It’s dirty, full of rubbish, tents in doorways. It looks like a 3rd world country. It breaks my heart. The Torquay I grew up in was clean and tidy, booming in the summer. It was a great place to be. Now it’s just a shit hole full of junkies and scumbags.

I remember visiting friends in Torquay in 1998, then going there on holiday with a friend in 2016 and it was not too bad. It looks like its gone to shit with the legal high boom, and onwards. It can be great again

Someone has to start talking about corruption in England’s councils. How they hike up the rates to close businesses and sell off council property to private companies. Who gave them the permission to do this? Why is it that governments refuse to build houses themselves and instead farm out the work to private businesses who just want to build luxury houses? When did the poor people of this nation give up their rights? How were their rights taken away from them? Why is nobody talking about this?

Yes the state policies has allot to do with this, While london is filled with some of the most rich people on the planet earth so that there is barely a foot of room left and so the city is like babylone while the rest of the country is left to rot. First they did not clean the beach for nearly 70 years that could have been done so well then even now there is no business planning. The first thing is to plane how to advertise that in your town you can go to sea in those boats very cheap then make accomodation cheap, then may be open up discose as well where they can employs lots of pretty ladies to entertian people as chat nothing else and on and they are suppose to add to that but most people will come from london then when they see how nice it was to go out to the sea in a nice boats toures and then how nice it was to stay in some really good cheap hotel and then how nice it was to chat to those ladies in discos and other places , thus many of the rich men will eventually buy properties others will plane their own businesses here because it is open to all but nothing has been done about it because the people incharge do not know how ha ha ha....

British families no longer go on holiday to the "Seaside" in the UK. UK politicians and civil service elite no longer care about tourism... inward or internal. Manufacturing industries decimated , only minimum wage jobs if any, no investment in housing 😢, no security of tenure 😢, no representation 😢, I think I'm a centrist or ctr right but it's hard to be sure anymore because there is an uncaring class and a coping class and that seems to be it 😢😢 Well done JF for highlighting these issues.... it's never as simple as deadbeats doing nothing.....the uncaring class keeps others down too..😢 Ireland is just a few years behind the UK in this decline.

I live in Exeter and have followed the plight of the homeless (of which I am ) and lack of homes. I had it all to play for on the 20th March 2020. I rented a nice house, had a new business just about to sign up its first dealership after 3 years developing the product. Then the lockdown happened and the covid police turned up to shut down my business. I lost everything, home, business, savings, future and at 66 I live in a van. No homes for retired single men. Yet the government then bring out legislation to make it illegal to live in your motorhome or van on a public highway, even though your vehicle is taxed, mot'd and insured. A local organic veg farm applied to build worker pods on their farm because their workers could not afford to rent anything in Exeter. Planners turned them down but from their farm you can see a massive new expensive housing developement. This government and subsequent governments are only interested in what they can get out of the system.

I live in Torbay, and I can't say I've studied our council much, but I do know that the only remaining rubbish site is a distant drive away and some items are chargeable (and it's operated very securely). So, presumably local people/ify traders use these patches for dumping: If the council regularly picked-up the junk - it would get continually filled up again! The council finds it expedient/easier/cheaper to just leave it for the rats (and I've seen them)! Beside all the stuff, we imagine a council does (and doesn't do): I do know this area has a very, very significant retired/elderly care/infirmed aspect, and through my own limited experience - it's stonkingly (££££££) expensive for the individual/the council/NHS. You can go through a 1/3 of a Million in a few months, multiply that by perhaps, many thousands? I should imagine most of these seaside councils are nigh-on bankrupt!

I was there with my wife three weeks ago. Almost exactly to the date one year before that it was not great; but this time it has declined in so many ways. There were more homeless, more boarded up, or for rent, shops, with scruffy looking buildings, the whole atmosphere was garbage so we left after just one night, even though we'd planned for a Thursday to Saturday. My family used to go there in the late 70's and it really was a beautiful place, great atmosphere, lots of independent shops, all the pretty lights and that lit up gardens along the front during darkness was really nice. When we had stayed just one night, on the recent visit, I looked at my wife and asked her shall we leave early, she said yes please, and we have decided that we're never going back. We live not far from Bournemouth, and although that too has its problems in the town centre, it's nowhere nearly as bad as Torbay.

Former gems here in California include Santa Monica, but I would not set foot there now. Thank you for your channel, Joe, you're the best!

There are numerous channels now reporting on the shocking state of towns and cities across the UK and yet I have yet to hear any credible explanation from any elected MP or local authority big-wig as to why this has been allowed to happen. We've had plenty of boom and bust cycles over the decades (all by design I would suggest) but the current demise is off the scale and I do not believe this is solely a consequence of online shopping and high business rates. I do not see how this situation can ever be reversed.

All by design, which you may be aware of, if you look further afield than the tv and media. As for the July weather, there is an explanation and the best place for the answers is a KZbin channel called "Suspicious Observers " which shows in depth what they are not telling us. This probably started when the wealthy began buying second homes in these lovely places, leading to increased house prices and less property for sale so locals can't afford to buy, which in turn leads to a shortage of affordable property to rent. The locals then leave, businesses fail due to lack of year-round customers, and then there are no jobs.

As a child growing up in England, my family used to drive to Devon and Cornwall for our holidays, in a black Morris Minor, or Ford packed to the gunnels with all but the kitchen sink, along with our Welsh corgi, who liked to 'sing' on the journey. I have many fond memories of staying at lovely B&Bs. We always looked forward to our yearly summer visits. How sad to see an area of such natural beauty decend into unimaginable decay and human misery. Whenever did addiction, filth and violence become the norm in clean and picturesque towns? Truly shocking and heartbreaking! The England of my childhood now exists only as a distant memory in old family albums. Hours spent fishing for mackeral on a small boat with my father and other holiday makers wearing sun hats, eating fish'n'chips wrapped in newspaper, and vanilla ice cream cones, feeding the seagulls while playing on the beach with my red bucket and spade, are all memories of a carefree era that now exist only in a few black and white photos snapped by my mother using a box camera, and on the postcards we sent to relatives, now long gone. How can things possibly change so much? How sad!

@@chazsach6594 thank you for reminding me. I like Paignton so don't wish to write anything worse. To be clear, it is not very different to many other towns and cities around the country.Perhaps, it's because it was such a nice place, it makes it come across worse. Some people cite immigration and homeless numbers having a correlation but given the empty houses by the street full in some northern towns and other derelict city centre property across the country, there could be a roof over everyone's head. Most crime is driven by drugs People in the grip of addiction have different priorities. Recovering addicts on the other hand often come across as so positive, caring and full of energy and purpose.

Whilst there’s been a noticeable decline in Torbay, the problems you feature here are country wide and worse in many other areas. Housing in Torbay is a huge issue, so thank you for highlighting the disparity in social housing provision between Torbay and other localities. The TQ1 postcode was in the top four most ‘deprived areas’ in the country more than a decade ago, so no change there. The knock on effect of the pandemic on the hospitality industry on which Torbay relies is still being felt. All councils make mistakes and Torbay is no exception, but there’s only so much you can do with limited funding. The problems seem to lie at Government level and general lack of investment in the whole country. For balance, why not come back when the weather improves and make another video covering all the positive aspects of life in Torbay?

The council could be sweeping the streets for a start , clearing up the fly tipping , and working with the courts for people who are deemed to carry out community service, cleaning up the graffiti ! It really seems that many people in a position of power have given up.......its not acceptable. Finally, the drugs problem, are young people being educated in school by drug counsellors ? Is their an addiction rehabilitation centre in the area , a safe place for people to gain help ? The council, police, social services, and business enterprise centres need to work together, to bring these towns up to date with the facilities of a town in post Tory Britain 🇬🇧 xx

To be fair you have highlighted the very worst parts which aren't really any worse than most other sea side towns. Yes Factory Row and Castle Circus are shocking ,and virtually all the problems are down to the homeless hostel there. One thing to note is that in years gone by literally thousands of unemployed people moved to the area because then they were housed and could claim the same benefits as home but by the seaside. Having said all of that if you avoid the town centre and stick to pretty much anywhere else around the bay it is beautiful. At least he didn't make the same mistake as another KZbinr and spend ages filming the outside of the multi storey car park and give a long insightful commentary about it being run down social housing flats.

I went last month for a week's break. I had a great time and hopefully will return soon. Yes I noticed the homeless in doorways and empty shop units. But that's the same in every town and city. On the whole its a great place to visit.

This is what a country which has prentended for the last couple of decades it meant something in the world looks like when it is confronted with the truth that it doesn't produce anything and it isn't a leader in anything. The UK has become the very definition of 'managed decline'.

Everyone commenting about the issues discussed in your video - but I'm just mighty impressed with how well created this piece is, considering its made by just one man, a phone, and a computer!

This dude has done my head in. I'm born and bred Torquay and Paignton and still here and I feel his video is only taking snippets and portraying Torquay especially as it is always bad and this goes on constantly but it's all bullshit and he is full of shit

UK is now in incredible decline. In 1970's all tourist areas were thriving, High streets were busy and trading. Now those tourist areas are run down and people do not go as they did, whilst many High streets are boarded up, shuttered and many will never open again unless something drastic changes. Since big manufacturing industries were allowed to decline and the huge increase in local government and the extra layer of political class by Devolution, less of the working population actually earn money for the country, whilst more are in jobs paid by government, which is simply recycling taxes. When 70% of the working population are paid by some level of government, that is the communist system described in Animal farm. This is why UK is in serious decline for the past 50 years. We need manufacturing in UK to come back, Steel, Chemicals, Ship Building , and better Project Management (not by politicians). The political class are mostly incompetent.

This is criminal. Makes me sad to see these beautiful coastal cities in this kind of shape. Excellent reporting and you found great people to speak with. However, as an American who has lived in a lot of big cities, this really isn't that bad of a homeless problem -YET. Prior to a law change recently in Austin, our homeless camping situation was totally out of control. I hope your new government does better at spreading around the money. We are all only a few steps away from being homeless the way the world runs now, Would love to Venmo some of these people a little bit of money.

The main reason is coastal councils dress the facade for tourists and do very little for the locals, when the tourists are gone there is nothing for the young to do, this is not the only area suffering this kind of demise on the south coast.

The problem with homelessness is the cure is not just giving a homeless person a home. Many homeless people have a host of problems which means they aren’t set up to live normal lives. They won’t pay the rent or the utilities and often cause social problems. There is no appetite in politics to grasp the nettle has the saying goes. How would people in the woke society we live in, feel about basically boot camping people so they can get their act together? I can hear the cry of human rights! already but if something like enforced rehabilitation is not the answer what is?

Visited Torquay on a frequent basis since secondary school. My ex best mate's sister lived down there. On each trip down there, i have just seen a decline each time. Its sad to see. Look up the great reset and agenda 2031 to educate yourself. RIP Torquay

To say I am shocked is an understatement. When I was young, admittedly some time ago, this area was such a popular and lovely tourist destination. Drugs, unemployment and homelessness are, of course, part of the problem. Another problem is lack of investment - governments appear to apply funds to other matters. It is a tragedy.
